I actually paved the road through devils den and where your truck is parked a few years ago. I never believed in ghosts till we were paving where the memorial is with the eternal flame. We had to pave several roads at night due to traffic and saw a soldier on a horse jump the road! Right hand on my mother's grave true! And then it was gone. Trust me I would be the first to say "I'd have to see it to believe it" ! We also paved several roads in the battle field even the cemetery and was there almost the whole summer. Very interesting. Alot of lives lost both men and almost as many horses. Amazing place,

I'll be fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting Gettysburg. My father instilled in me a strong sense of respect for the past and the events that took place there. I imagine I will become extremely emotional my first time, being I understand wholeheartedly the terrible and bloody consequences that came out of that location. RIP to all lives lost there.

Ahhhhhh Gettysbury! Such a beautiful place with such a horrid battle. Mark Nesbitt has a ghost tour business there. I've had a number of conversations with him years ago. Mark was a ranger there for 5 years if I recall and he is also a historian. To verify stories he is a good source to inquire with. He has written a number of books about haunted G- burg. I have had some experience at Devil's Den. And keep in mind that it was a very hot and humid July during the battle. From an old account I'd read years ago, they were pulling bodies out of those nooks and crannies into September,,,,,what was left of them anyway. I believe there are still about 600 soldiers still unaccounted for. Those rocks are truly amazingly beautiful. Thanks WW! DaveyJO

I was there on my school's field trip in the 70's. Even as a kid I could tell the place has a 'heavy' feeling. My wife and I just went back on July 4th. Watching fireworks at Gettysburg is pretty special.

For anyone wondering why the ghost of a hippie would haunt the area, according to historians the way he appears aligns with what a First Texas Confederate soldier would have looked like.

Back in the 1960’s my Dad took us to Gettysburg and we went to Devil’s Den at twilight and if you looked to either side of you--there was NO DOUBT that you would see the soldiers all around you as well as hear the cannons and gun fire. My Dad, who was not even a little impressed when it was pouring rain on one side of the street and completely dry on the other side, could feel the soldiers and the gunfire. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THE GHOSTS REMAIN!

I took my son for his birthday in 2019. His birthday is July 3. I told him all about the Gettysburg history. He had a great time.

That big tree behind you and on the curve if the road is a WITNESS TREE, it was a young tree durning the battle, the park is full of witness trees, when they cull out trrez or cut up strom damage trees or dead trees they find bullets inside them. There are list of locations where you'll find other witness trees in the park. Museum/ visitors center has a part of a witness tree on display

Imagine fighting across those rocks in the middle of a heat wave in July. Than having to fight up the Round Tops later that day.

Went there often when I was a kid. We loved climbing on the rocks and almost giving our mom a heart attack. Didn’t understand the history when I was young but I enjoy the history and significance of what happened there years ago.

I remember first seeing Devil's Den when I was about seven or eight. My late father was born in Gettysburg and we used to visit during the summer my relatives who still lived around there. Of all of the spots on the battlefield and for reasons I didn't know, standing on the rocks gave me the willies. I guess the name obviously stuck in my mind; but it seemed to be more. Even at a young age when you really don't realize the pain and loss of the battle I felt out of sorts there.

My birthday trip for many of my young years. Just climbed those rocks most of the day. It was years later I finally did the bus top tour.

Love Gettysburg. Been there in 1997 and I have ben hooked since then. There are some videos on Y tube of some Gettysburg ghosts. One of these days, I will return to Gettysburg and roam around history.

Hi Cliff, Had you taken this trip to Devil's Den about 2 years later, after you did the "unfinished millstone" at Middlecreek feature, you would have recognized the name you found etched into the boulder at Devils Den, time 7;32 of the video. Yes, "J TIPTON", last name same as mine. This same etch was shown in "Gettysburg Secrets 1" at 8;47. A couple of my direct ancestors from both my parents sides fought at Gettysburg. Tiptons fought on both sides with a vast majority of them for the South. One Georgia Unit at this battle had over a dozen Tiptons. Finds like this make it so exciting as I study my family history, where my ancestors were prominent in many historic occurrences.

I was alone there at night in early November , 11 years ago...I never should have gone down there alone. I was parked up on the ridge behind the hill that I think they called Little Round Top. It just wasn't a good idea and as soon as I got there I was really so terrified that I wanted to scream really loudly and run... My Flesh was really feeling like it was crawling.. I had a friend on the phone but he really was not going to be able to do anything for me that's for certain... and yet even though I was trying to get some comfort from him I felt as if I was on the moon... just really far from everyone. To get back to the car I had to walk back down from the Den and then go up the steep hill of Little Round Top. Even after I got in the car I did not really feel safe till I drove away and started passing other cars. But somebody on another video said all these places that have the word devil in their names from the American Indians is usually because people would disappear around those places.

I've run into spirits there twice. Don't see them, just feel them.

I used to go boldering there when I lived in Gettysburg. probably my favorite spot in the national park. I'd always clear out before sunset though. the whole park gets creepier at night.

interesting history lesson. It could very well be haunted because of all those soldiers lives lost during the war there. We have visited similar like areas, and I felt an uneasy presence while hiking the isolated battle fields. thx. for sharing the video.

The first name you show is astounding! It's partially gone, but I believe it was carved by William H. Tipton, or someone in his party who was taking photos of the area some time after the war. If you look online and search his name you'll find out more. I hope my information helps if nobody else figured it out by now.

I enjoyed your Devil's Den video, I even went online to get even more information about it. Good job!I visited Antietam once and took the tour. Everyone on the tour agreed they suddenly felt a strange sensation(not scary) of sadness and a feeling they were being watched once we entered the battle site. I remembered a re-enactor telling me years ago this was the best place to go to get the feeling of what the war was like and he gave a slight smile when he said it. When our guide was informed of the sensation we all felt, he also gave a slight smile, but just continued on with the lecture. I don't believe in ghost but that was a very strange sensation and it didn't leave until I left the area. On the tour you drive your own vehicle while following the guide to three locations. The tour takes about one and a half hours and about 20 minutes are spent at each location explaining what happened there.Some day you may want to take that tour and film it for your students, as it was very informative and contained some interesting facts you won't find in history books. Unlike Gettysburg there are few monuments on this site and when they can, they buy and bulldoze everything that was not there during the time of the battle.PS. That sensation at Antietam came as a complete surprise, I hope mentioning it does not in some way ruin it for you. I have never forgotten it.

Arrowheads or “blunts” that may have been found by earlier settlers in Gettysburg areas could just have indicated they were from hunting deer or other game.

We had a amazing experience at The Devils Den with The Haunted Helpful Hippie. Something none of us will ever forget.

For a better experience, I strongly suggest going out onto the field before sunrise (the park opens upon sunrise) but you'll be more likely to be by yourself in the wheat field, or in the valley.

I went there once with a girl I was dating ghost hunting it was like one in the morning and we were walking back to the car... as we were going down the stairs I had the flashlight so I was behind her I saw a white mist just walk in front of me and disappear and I was so happy I can’t explain it.

I know volcanic rocks can be magnetic but I don't know if it has to be launched in the air or if it's all magnetic to the comes from the core. But that would be an attraction to any energy.

at dusk on 07/03/2013 my long friend and his 2 sons were visiting devils' den as the last part of our tour that day. There had been re-enactments and activities through the day, but most had cleared out by that time. We were sitting at the rock near the parking where that famous picture of the dead soldier was taken lying face up on a large boulder. I was in back of my friend with his younger son and he was with his boy in front of me. A man dressed in union uniform with NO patches (just blue uniform), no hat and wearing wire rim glasses walks over to us from the left and in between myself and my friend. He looked over at me and my friend's son and says, "Am I really here?" this gets the attention of my friend and his son who look back at the man who he thought was just wondering around being a tourist and tells the man "yeah, you're right there" jokingly. The man walks off to the right toward the parking area where we can see others going to their cars and then he just vanished. My friend and I look at each other as he left and said that was weird! I along with his son immediately walk toward where we last saw the guy and start asking people walking by " did you see where that guy in the blue uniform went?" Everyone we asked said they never saw him walk past them in the parking lot. That left us with uneasy chills and disbelief as we left that night back home. We still talk about it every time we get together. Years earlier we had experienced hearing cannon fire in the late afternoon. No re-enactments were going on at that time. Gettysburg is a special place!

I feel so sorry for those spirits that they're not crossing over I guess because they die such a horrible death they don't want to believe that they're dead but if they cross over they would feel so much better no more pain or nothing but I guess it's up to God to put them at rest when the time comes but hopefully they'll be at peace soon

The spot where they move the dead solder body was actually up the road. You was close. They actually have it marked with a plaque. It’s called Home of the rebel sharpshooter. There’s also actually only one account where they moved a body for a photo and that’s the one.

You know if the soldiers who died there fighting for a cause, they would be dead know anyways, fighting for the right thing seems a proper way to conduct ones life, thnks

so i don't tell this often but here it goes. i go to gettysburg a lot, for some reason im drawn there, even dragged my wife there on our honeymoon. one trip, early in the morning, heavy fog, had to drive really slow. Was on Hanover St. and we saw a man dressed as a union soldier walking up the street with his rifle and fixed bayonet. No events were scheduled for the day and we just assumed it was someone that worked at the park but wondered why he would walk to the park. To this day, we have no idea what we saw, but it was neat.

The picture your referring to were not dead soldo. They were living soldiers planted there to act dead by the photographer Alexander Gardner. Now the real picture from there was the confederate sharp shooter picture. He was in fact dead.however moved from one spot to the spot in the picture.

Pretty sure the confederates never took little round top. I do know little round top was held by a Maine division, and relieved later on. From what I remember Confederates made a few pushes and never took it and at one point the Maine unit was pretty much out of ammo so they ordered a bayonet charge down the hill for a last stand to hold the hill. Watch Gettysburg the movie and you will have a good idea what happened there on little round top.
