The old air base at Bircham Newton originated from its initial use as a World War 1 airfield in 1918 before its expansion throughout the 1920s after it was retained by the RAF following the war. During the 1920s and most of the 1930s it remained a peacetime bomber base, before playing a pivotal role in World War 2 during the D Day landings in 1944. Over 500 men lost their lives during their course of service at the aerodrome. The base closed in 1962 and four years later was taken over by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Despite the grass runways soon disappearing, the buildings remained, including a pair of squash courts located behind the officers’ mess. The squash courts is where an intriguingly detailed paranormal event took place in 1970 when a CITB film unit began work on a management training film. It is one of many unexplainable experiences which have reputedly taken place at the old RAF base since its closure in 1962. The video will include historic tape recordings of real unexplainable audio phenomena.

I went to college there in 2016, I spent 12 weeks there, I used to see shadows sometimes in my room and in the hallway and in a couple of classrooms over in the hangars, one night a group of us asked for the squash court keys acting like we wanted to play squash but when we got in there we were getting pieces of gravel thrown at us in the left court from through the doorway and my mate got a picture of a man hanging in a noose in the viewing gallery above the court, and a chair somehow got from the top of the stairs to the bottom silently, the whole place is crawling with ghosts and wierd vibes over in the gym is wierd too, it's like your not alone in there

Oh wow amazing thanks so much for sharing your story. You definitely aren’t alone in your experiences - I have heard from lots of people who have experienced similar phenomena. In regards to the photo of the man hanging in a noose I don’t suppose you have access to this photo do you? Or can contact your friend to see if he still has it? It would be amazing to see as it’s really rare to capture an apparition on camera. There was an airman who reportedly committed suicide in the building where the squash courts are so this photo you mention would tie in with the history. Thanks again for sharing - fascinating 🙂

Thank-you for watching the video and taking the time to comment. Thought this was an interesting ghost story to share as not widely known about now - was a pretty famous haunting back in its day! The squash courts are still there on site but apparently access is quite tricky to the old RAF base now since the CITB took over ownership - makes you wonder if the activity has quietened down over the years or whether the location is still quite active for paranormal happenings!

Many airforce bases appear to be haunted. With so much heightened tension and fear it's understandable to me that some of that still remains. Great video and love the spoken introductions.

Hi Sophie - someone contacted me recently to say there are still strange things going on here in recent times too. I’ve heard plenty of stories from people with past connections to the air base. I think there seems to be a mixture of activity going on. Some is residual i.e. almost like a playback or time slip which would help explain the old aircraft noises and mechanical machinery sounds of a working airbase. However there seems to be some spirit activity too with a definite intelligence that is very much capable of interacting with the living and our physical world. It’s a fascinating place - hopefully will get to visit one day 🙂

@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk Yes, I have heard of the "stone tape theory" but as you say there appears to be a spirit that is stuck, maybe because of the circumstances in which he died, still attached to the building. Very sad that the poor guy can't move on.

@@Sophie.S.. - it is sad. A lady contacted me to say she won a competition to spend a night in the haunted squash court and said it was all quiet on the night. This was back in the 1990s. She claimed the building had been blessed / exorcised a few years before so perhaps this particular spirit has since moved on. Thanks again Sophie - always nice to have a chat with you :)

Do you mean the squash court? If you are based there it’s certainly worth a trip. Are you allowed to stay there overnight or just visit during the day? A lady contacted me to say she won a competition to spend a night in the haunted squash court and said it was all quiet on the night. This was back in the 1990s. She claimed the building had been blessed / exorcised a few years before so perhaps this particular spirit of the airman has since moved on but who knows? If you get the chance it’s definitely worth a visit.

Surprised no tv ghost hunt programs have been made at this location, perhaps the medium chap that visited years ago and tried to help the spirits move on was successful?. There were more scary experiences mentioned in comments on the original video clip by CTIB students who stayed in the nearby dormitories.

My sister, Sarah was living on the Camp whilst her husband was away with the raf. He was a hunter pilot. When he came home he asked how she was. She said she was OK as the camp was so busy that she didn't feel alone. She could here all tge men at work. Her husband said it was not possible as the station was closed and inactive. There was no one there. Her married quarters were an overspill from thr active station. She heard the noises quite a few times- many times in fact. This was Bout 1964.

@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk 2 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for commenting 🙂. That’s an interesting suggestion and could explain some of the residual sounds, as could the stone tape type theory (like a snapshot of a playback in time from the past). However in cases where the spirits are directly interacting with people in our physical world I believe this to be an intelligent haunting. Some of the spirits seem to be very much aware of our presence and our surroundings in this material world and this indicates an intelligence and understanding. There seems to be a consciousness there in some of the interactions. In my mind ghosts and spirits are different. Ghosts are a playback in time, they do the same things over and over again and are not aware of people living today, almost like an unconscious energy. Spirits however are different, they have a consciousness and are able to interact with those on the earthly plain. I think spirit entities have their consciousness focused to such a degree that they can cause manifestations on the physical level.
@Agui007
@Agui007 2 ай бұрын
@@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk That is exactly right! Spirits interact and revisit of there own free will. Where as ghosts, are more like a broadcast of many different versions of the past. Very similar to TV as a medium.
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk
@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk 2 ай бұрын
Exactly - sometimes there is a misconception that ghosts and spirits are the same but actually they’re quite different. Spirits to me are more interesting as they have an intelligence and are able to interact directly with our earthly realm.

Those who know their Bibles see the devil's game. Devils can impersonate anyone. This is why the LORD commanded to have nothing to do with the dead! Moses in Deuteronomy 18:9-13 lists every cultic practice that plays the world the fool! The world's wisest man to ever live, King Solomon said it plain enough: "the dead know not any thing," "for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave;" and thus "shall be as though they had never been." This is why the Bible calls death "sleep." Everyone sleeps "the sleep of death" until the resurrection, "for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ."
