I feel like they gave the gastly line the poison typing because in gen 1 the poison type was the default “evil” type, which from gen 2 onwards would be replaced with the dark type.

I'm excited to see Weepinbell and Poliwhirl. I think both have the potential to outdo Haunter. They both get a sleep inducing move (Sleep Powder or Hypnosis) and strong stat boosting moves (Growth and Swords Dance for Weepinbell and Amnesia for Poliwhirl).

Regarding Body Slam on Gengar, I think it makes sense. The whole idea of the Gengar-line is it starts as a non-corporial ball of gas, and evolves into the fully formed Gengar. Haunter being an intermediary step. So I think it makes sense that it gains Body Slam upon being fully formed.

Great video Scott! In terms of what middle stage evos seem most likely to me in terms of beating Haunter, the two that come to mind are Poliwhirl and Weepinbell. Poliwhirl might seem like a weird choice to some, it gets a ton of advantages ingame that it's prevolution and evolution both don't get. It's a happy medium between having an incredible movepool, typing, and passable stats. 90 speed is very good, it's other stats are not great, especially that 50 base special but keep in mind that once you get access to amnesia, that won't be a problem anymore. It gets bubble and hypnosis to start, very good for brock. It seems worse than it is for misty, because if I'm not wrong you can get access to Seismic Toss before her gym which makes it easier in tandem with hypnosis and water typing. After that, you get access to Body Slam and Bubblebeam. Surge is super rough here, not sure what the exact gameplan would be outside of hypnosis luck. But, once you get past him you can skip Erika until you get blizzard/psychic or enough levels and move on to other trainers. Amnesia at 41 is huge and will allow this pokemon to pick up speed and sweep through the game near the mid-to-late game portions. My prediction is that it might outperform Haunter based on this mid and late game boost where Haunter's champion battle among other inconsistencies (overreliance on hypnosis over a boosting move and meh coverage for ingame RBY) holds it back. Another pokemon to consider is Weepinbell. I was actually debating whether to put Ivysaur here instead or not. A race between the two would be really interesting! But I think my edge goes to Weepinbell. It just gets a ton of options early, even if it learns Razor Leaf super late. Vine Whip + Growth + Wrap at level 1 plus Sleep powder not far on the horizon give it a lot to work with early game. It has a ton of opportunities to just break through opponents it might even have a disadvantage against with this combination of moves which is an impressive quality. With a similar growth rate to Victreebel, it's bound to get access to Razor Leaf before long, though it has a very rough mid-to-late game to work with considering it doesn't have the same amount of power by any means at a paltry 85 Special and 55 speed. It' defense is 50 and HP is 65 which is slightly fragile too. It also loses access to Body slam, which Ivysaur gets. It should be kept in mind however that Bellsprout is above Poliwag, which might be a good indicator that if I think Poliwhirl will do good, there's no reason why Weepinbell shouldn't either. I don't really have an argument as to why it might be better than Haunter, other than Victreebel's results and Grass/Poison being one of the better types for Kanto. It could surprise us, but I wouldn't be surprised if a mon like Ivysaur was better considering it gets Razor Leaf 8 levels earlier and Body Slam to pair with SD. Anyways thanks for the prompt lmao

Looks like the main reason the Haunter like are Poison types is because Ghost-type was an extremely last minute decision on the part of the designers (Dragon and Bug were also probably late decisions). As a result, I’m almost positive that for most of development, Gastly, Haunter and Gengar were pure Poison-type (they are gas clouds after all) and they left the typing on the family probably because that’s what they were playtested as and they didn’t want to accidentally break some battle’s balance by completely changing their weaknesses. Hope that helps!

@aarongeorge8175
@aarongeorge8175 9 ай бұрын
@@darlhiatt8136 We know from the internal data that Ghost was the last physical type added, and Bug was right before it (Dragon was the last special type added). In addition, yeah, Bug has only four moves in the final, and in the early moveset data we have, all of those moves were still Normal type and hadn't yet been switched to Bug (Ghost moves were all Ground type in that data, oddly, but that was probably a placeholder). I'm also pretty sure that Ice and Rock were very late, though not as late as those three. Interestingly, if you remove those fives types (Dragon, Bug, Ghost, Ice, and Rock) then all the other types are covered by one of the Gyms plus the fighting Dojo.
@darlhiatt8136
@darlhiatt8136 9 ай бұрын
@aarongeorge8175 wow. It's fascinating what you can learn from internal data. Yeah, I can't think of why lick and confuse ray would be ground type, placeholder is probably right. Not sure Rock fits your theory there though, it has its own gym leader in Brock already without needing to be excluded. Although, aside from bug, those 5 types do map OK to the elite 4 if you count Bruno as a Rock trainer. I do think the Fighting Dojo may have once been planned as an actual gym though, although I do really like the worldbuilding implications it brings up.
@aarongeorge8175
@aarongeorge8175 9 ай бұрын
I’m sorry, I forgot to mention that Brock was probably a Ground trainer in earlier development, not Rock (notice how his two Pokémon are both Ground type and the Junior trainer has a Diglett?) Giovanni was 100% a flying type trainer- you can even see this in the final, since his badge is still shaped like a feather. There’s also only three Roco type moves in the final game, and iirc one was Ground originally. Also, fun fact: originally Agatha wasn’t a ghost trainer: she had the three Eevees, a Tauros, and a Tangela!
@darlhiatt8136
@darlhiatt8136 9 ай бұрын
@aarongeorge8175 wow! That's a really different version of Agatha. I like the Tauros, a subtle Prof Oak connection. It's hard to imagine Giovonni as flying type despite the badge design just because of how iconic some of his normal team become over the gens, but for Red and Blue (as opposed to Yellow where his mons have Earthquake) that might have made a tougher final gym. Would be interesting to see that alternate reality.

Hi Scott! Ever considered a "true solo run"? i.e. no other Pokemon caught at all, no other party members, the starter is the only Pokemon from start to finish and has to use any needed HMs or wanted field moves itself. I feel it would make an interesting decision making process, choosing between dedicating a move slot to Fly or leaving it open for another move at the cost of travel time and convenience. Generation I ends up being a particularly interesting time for it due to the lack of move deleters, but also only 3 HMs being needed to complete the game. Candidates for the challenge are: >Mew (the only one that can learn Fly, since I forgot Dragonite can't learn Cut - oops) >Krabby >Kingler >Lickitung I thought Dragonite would be able to as well, but I was thinking of Hoenn where Cut is optional. Unfortunate that none of the other three gain access to any of Dig, Teleport or Softboiled like Mew does. Thank you for your time! ( And sorry if I've already mentioned this before and forgot that I'd brought it up already. :x )

To this day, even after over two decades, I am *STILL* confounded over how there are only 3 Ghost types in Gen 1 that are supposed to be Super Effective against Psychics...only for the Ghost moves to not work as intended and the Ghosts themselves to be WEAK to Psychic moves because of their Poison typing. XD I'm currently at the point of the video in Mt. Moon where you're talking about the Poison type being plastered on the Ghosts. That's...actually an interesting theory. I never thought of that! OK, I juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust finished the video. Here are my thoughts: I'm glad you talked about the issue of PP management early on. Whenever I play Gen 1, I like to use the Trainer Fly/Mew Glitch to get certain Pokémon earlier than I should. Mew and Staryu are the obvious ones, of course, but during my last few playthroughs - Red, Green (fan "translated" by using the Pokémon Blue script similarly to how fans "translated" Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep: Final Mix in English on PSP before it was officially translated and released on PS3/4) and Blue - I've also went out of my way to nab Gengar as well. Its PP problems are exactly the same as Haunter's until you reach the S.S. Anne and nab Body Slam. It's still not perfect since its Attack is still much weaker than its Special, but at least it's not the same three moves that have low PP and only do much utility. The only reason it wasn't as bad in my case was because I could use the same glitch to encounter Missingno to get essentially close to infinite TM's such as Thunderbolt and Psychic. Oh, and the Rare Candies. And the Master Ball(s). And the Full Restores. I love how this community just keeps helping each other out! Seeing everyone's input on the Champion battle is really neat and further cements what I've been saying since those batch of videos discussing the Porygon race: you and your team have carved an incredible niche that has brought so many people together. Whether it's people like me who mostly comment on these videos as we have since the early days; to others in the community who have been influenced by your videos and are starting their own runs; to those that were doing them around or maybe before you like Gym Leader Matt, VanMan, Speedrunner, Andrew Davis, Ike the Killer and many, *MANY* others I have left to list. You and your team have been doing incredible work and it's heartening to see you all grow and continue to grow over the years. Anyways, another excellent run as always, Scott and Team! Naturally, it's no surprise it made it to the S-Tier after some small optimizations.

Ah finally, my favorite pokemon of all gens. Based on your thorough gameplay i feel you did my Haunter the best way possible and i truly thank you for that. I know its just the middle child of the line so to speak, but ever since i first saw its sprite in red (favorite sprite too lol but yellows sprite is a close 2nd) and then the Sabrina episode in the anime i absolutely fell in love with the goofy mischievous ghost and my opinion hasnt changed once. It is regrettable that the moveset for the entire line is 😑 at best, especially with lick being the only STAB move it can have as a ghost along with the blundered immunity psychic types have in gen 1. But with its performance here i can say at least it has some decently viable choices from the TMs it has access to. I cant wait for your eventual test of Haunter in crystal and other gens but i know that'll be a ways down the road and im content to wait for those days to come in the next year or 2. I will predict that youll have a similar result like this when comparing to Gengar in those playthrus, potentially same tier but a few spots behind due to same moves, routes, and battles just with lower stats causing that little bit of extra time. Thanks again for playing my Haunter so well and giving it the chance to shine. Excellent video quality, game play, inlay was awesome, and commentary on point as usual my friend. Keep up the great pokemon data collection, gotta rank them all!!! Later lol

29:12 due to a programming quirk / shortcut, lick cannot paralyze ghost types! This is because gamefreak programmed types to be immune from secondary effects of moves that match their type. I believe the intent was for this to be "oh fire types shouldn't be burned, electric types paralyzed, ice types frozen" but due to the way it was programmed it extends to immunities that don't make sense, like all normal types being immune be paralysis from body slam!

I'd give Poliwhirl mid-top B-tier and Weepingbell either just in front of Haunter at S-tier or a tad behind Haunter maybe at front of A-tier. Just my guess from Scott's tier list lol. @@pyriel6870 I see where you're coming from, but Poliwhirl has 2 advantages over Poliwrath: it's faster, and it has Amnesia. And unlike Haunter, Poliwhirl starts with a move that's super-effective against Brock and doesn't run out of PP easily, and it gets access to Bodyslam for coverage. Poliwhirl is actually one of the top Pokemon in Jrose11's Red/Blue solo series, right on par with Nidoking, Nidoqueen and Hypno. The promo code unfortunately did not work with the UK/EU version of the website, but thank you for promoting this! As someone who feels happier and healthier sleeping all day and staying up all night, for decades I've relied on these flimsy sleep masks that my dad got from airplanes when he was constantly travelling for work, simply because there was no other place I could get anything like them. This seems like exactly what I need in my life so I ordered one to try it out. I hope that this sale still gets credited to you and that you get the appropriate kickback.

Gengar in French is actually called Ectoplasma 😂 and Body Slam works like the opponent slamming their body against the Pokémon, kinda like wrestlers drop themselves, I think Gengar has the ability to materialize itself, that's why it can learn it, also there is a Pokedex entry that says Gengar was once human, so maybe that, and there is also the Clefable x Gengar theory 😅

I think the reason Gengar can learn Body Slam but Haunter cannot is Gengar is significantly heavier and body slam gives me the vibes of using your weight to slam into the enemy

Also down the road with your backporting. It would be interesting to eventually backport Gen 8 Magikarp. (Where it learns bounce and hydro pump). The only way Magikarp can finish the game I'm sure really! LOL

Haunter in Pokémon brown n grape are ghost and gas types Koffing is poison gas Gas IS GREAT OFFENSIVE but horrible defensely It hits water, light, grass, bug n fairy super effective Light fairy n water are busted types in those games especially light n water Ironically its weak to water, electric, flying, wind n electric AND YEA they reversed bug n fairy where bug nukes fairy n fairy is not effective vs bug But they buffed poison by it hitting bug super effective

As far as who can compete with Haunter I’d have to think either Poliwhirl or Weepinbell
@victoriancu5661

It feels silly for the developers to add the poison typing to the ghosts just to avoid poison when they could have easily just added that property to the ghost type. However it’s possible with the amount of crunch both time-wise, and to hit the whole game on an 8mb cartridge.

Poliwhirl definitely for good mid stage maybe Weepinbell, Ivysaur, and Wartotle could have good times because of boosting moves.

also what midstage can compete with Haunter for S-tier status? well given it's first stage is comparable with Gastly, and it's final evo competes with Gengar... uhhh Weepinbell? although would be interesting to see a Nidoran F vs Nidoran M first just to throw those times also think Kadabra (and eventually Alazakam) would go pretty close - nope, Gen1 move jank (and no actual moves until level 16 when it learns confusion) means the opening is a struggle fest would be a decent "backport" given that they both know confusion from the start in future gens (how much does Kadabra/Alazakam improve if it was "Gen 2'd" and given Confusion as a starting move?)

Who could compete with Haunter? Obvious answer is Kadabra. Alakazam and Gengar feel linked in Pokemon as they are both insanely strong special attackers, are trade evolutions, and their typings are strong against one another. Only natural that Kadabra would be the only rival to Haunter.
@pommyadam

until you check Kadabra (and Alazakam's) Gen1 moveset, only having Kinesis/Teleport until level 16 it'll be a STRUGGLE fest early on (although the Vaporeon team will be a nice variety because you CAN'T win the lab fight) but once you defeat Brock (because you'll be roughly level 15 or so to do it) and gets access to Confusion? should be easy from there

Obligatory complaint about Hypnosis! Just kidding, it was essential for several key battles. Quite similar to Gengar, just slightly worse, which still makes it really good overall! Pretty sure Gastly can get sub-50 with a few attempts.

For middle evolutions, I don't see any of them beating Haunter, but the closest contenders are probably Poliwhirl and Weepinbell. Gloom ain't it and Kadabra would've had a shot if this were Red and Blue, but Yellow knocks confusion off its default moveset for some reason so it's struggling until level 16.

Gengar has arms. Pokémon like rhyhorn would throw opponents up by the horn then guide it down with the horn, slamming them in the process. I have always wondered about that move with Pokémon like pikachu. How can it pick up an onyx? It doesn’t. It uses a wrestling move called a “cutter” where pikachu in this instance would jump up and grab only the head and/or neck and bring them down head first like that. Gotta use physics/ pro wrestling and get creative lol.
