Larry, of the 'Acousticedison' channel suggested I should have one, so glad I took his advice. Yes, they can be tricky to repair. The whole horn assembly swivels, thereby tracking the reproducer across the record. A curved spring loaded rack, which is driven by a feed screw, is welded to the top of the horn, to effect this swiveling motion. Sadly, this weld had failed & had been replaced by solder by a previous owner. This solder also eventually failed, So I drilled some holes in the horn & I re attached the rack assembly with nuts & bolts. Because the stylus links with the diaphragm via a floating weight, reproducer height is critical, requiring fine adjustments. With all his genius, I'm amazed Edison thought he could push back the tide of conventional discs by an over engineered & expensive machine that only played his style of records. That said, barring problems with the surface technology (due to raw material supply difficulties) nothing comes near Edison's mastery of acoustic recording. Overall, its a joy to own & operate.

I’ve seen a photo online of an Edison label with a UK copyright sticker, so they were definitely sold here, although imported. Despite the format’s shortcomings it sounds good on a machine like that. Is this one electrically recorded?

A KZfaqr informed me that electrical recording started with catalogue No. 52089 in 1927, so this one's acoustic. Edison was excellent at acoustic recording, but the discs could have surface problems down the years due to difficulties in obtaining the correct raw materials. My experience is, that if the player (esp. the reproducer & stylus), is in good order & you happen to have a good disc, then the sound quality will be great. Edison discs, like other vertical cut ones, may well have suffered from being played on an unsuitable machine.
