The story of this song is tragic: In Siberia in 1852 they found a dead body of coachman who got frozen during a long road. There was a notebook with handwriting poems in his bag. Name of the author of the poems Иван Макаров (Ivan Makarov) was not known during his life time. After a year since they were published the poems composer Александр Львович Гурилев (Alexander Gurilev) (1803 - 1858) wrote music for a poem what he liked the most. That was a start for the famous Russian romance “The Lonely Coach-Bell”. In three years another Russian composer К. Сидорович (K. Sidorovich) wrote his version of music for the poem and this romance has got a long life and all people love!

Awesome! For non speaking Russians, this song is about a lone passenger traveling on a Russian Troika (horse and sleigh). All he hears is the sound of the little bell on the horse/horses as they hurry in the quiet snow. It's a long journey and, still a long way to go with nothing but sound of the little bells and his thoughts. He reflects on his life .. as if speaking top the coachman, braving the cold, guiding the horses. He's very tired .. life has not been good, yet it's not been bad .. just life! Hence, slow tempo, plus photos of real life in Russian AS IT IS TODAY STILL.

I read about a version where someone is riding inside a coach in Siberia. He or she is somewhat comfortable in the coach while the coachman outside has frozen to death in the Siberian winter. Very sad. "And my coachman has now fallen silent, And I still have a long way to go".

I was unhappy with available translations of this song, so here is mine: The Coach Bell In the distance a bell, faintly sounding Through the dust rising up from the road And a coachman is heard singing sadly, That I ask, what that song might forebode. So much sadness there is in that sound; So much grief in that lonely refrain That my heart which was hardened and weary In my breast was re-kindled again I recalled nights long gone, other places And the fields and the forests so dear That my eyes which so long have been arid Became moist with a glistening tear In the distance the bell, faintly sounding Is an echo from times so remote; And my coachman, now silent and weary And the road fades away with that note.

Mr. Ramensky this makes the sublime melody complete. Thanks so very much for work and post. There are only two kinds of music as we know - good and bad. But the late Russian composers prove IMHO nobody tops the Russians for beautiful song. This, exemplary.
@lederhudler
@lederhudler 9 жыл бұрын
Nice translation - it captures almost every nuance of the Russian words, yet retains the poetry - very difficult to do going between very dissimilar languages. You even mentions the "dust" of the road (the Russian literally reads, 'the road dusts up a little bit"). I especially like the last couple of lines - you capture the sense (also found in the Russian version) of this monotonous coachman's dreary song fading off into the distance.
@lederhudler
@lederhudler 9 жыл бұрын
My only argument is with the title - I don't know, but I always picture the bell as being the church bell of the home town, peeling in the distance, as the person leaves home for the last time. I don't know if coaches typically had bells - but I don't associate that sound with melancholy, like I would associate the peeling of a familiar church bell with which I had grown up. Who knows?
@nramensky
@nramensky 9 жыл бұрын
Ah, the title. First of all, let me express my heartfelt thanks for your very kind comments about my translation. In russian, which you obviously command, the title is the opening line "Однозвучно гремит колокольчик", and the key word is, of course, "колокольчик". That word uses the diminutive construction. I don't think, that a church bell would be described as a "little bell". My other comment in relation to your query as to whether coaches typically had bells, is that you do a Google search on "тройка иллюстрации". You will have to squint a bit, but I think you will find " little bells" on most of the illustrations. This song was composed after a poem, which was found on the body of its author a lonely Russian ямщик.

Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing, And the dust from the road fills the air. And the coachman’s sorrowful singing Floats across the wild fields in despair. That sad song overflows with such feeling, So much grief can be heard in that strain, That my cold heart, long hardened and weary In my bosom was kindled again. I recalled other nights, other wand’rings, And the fields and the forests so dear, And my eyes, which so long have been arid, Became moistened like jewels with a tear. Oh, how lonely the coach bell is ringing, As it swings in the night to and fro. And my coachman has now fallen silent, And I still have a long way to go

This is one of - if not the most beautiful of all Russian "folk" ballads. It usually goes by the English title, "Monotonously rings the little bell", or something similar. Monotonously is a good translation - the Russian word literally means "with once voice". This song is often performed/published in combination with other popular and well-known folk or folkloric style Russian songs. It's one of my favorites. It has all the elements of the melancholic Russian disposition - a (village church) bell ringing in the distance, a person leaving their home perhaps never to return, a coachman singing this monotonous melancholic dirge, fleeting memories of youthful joy, etc. I sang it once (po russkiy, konyechnah) for a folk dance assembly - and sort of know the words, but not everything without a cheat sheet. Another one - also about a bell, also beautiful, and also very sad - is "Vyecherniy Zvon" (The Evening Bell). There are a couple of tunes for the latter - but one is more commonly heard than the other - and the more common tune is another of my personal favorite. And while we're at it, check out "Stenka Razin" (Stenka Razin, the Volga boat commander) and "Denadtsat' Razbojnikov" (the legend of the twelve robbers) - a couple of other really excellent Russian ballads.

Thank you. A little more information, with your permission. Not a village church bell is meant here, but a little bell under the shaft bow of a horse. And it rings when the cart moves. Vyecherniy Zvon, by the way, is a translation of Thomas Moore's poem Those Evening Bells. Stenka Razin was not a Volga boat commander, but a Don Cossack, the head of a major uprising of 17th century.
