No. I'm not sure but things on that vast scale only happen with government contracts (it seems).

In Austria, and i guess in Germany also, most building contractors use cranes like that, in building and bridge construction. It might take a little time and money to put them in place, but then you are very independent, and dont have to wait on truck cranes, or other machines, to move building material arround, they are remote controlled in most cases on smaller projects, so you dont have to pay an operator empty, for the time where nothing has to be moved. They are quite easy to operate for a skilled person, that wants to do the job, and the licence is not hard to get. So many crews have more than one person, that can operate the crane, which makes everything more easy. Also you save a lot of space, many house building projects dont have a lot of storing area, around, so it is almost impossible to use forklifts, or telehandlers to reach the place where rebar, or bricks etc are stored, behind the building or so. But in Road Building or other civil engineering work, we also use a lot of site dumpers, and compact wheel loaders, Mini Excavators and such to deal with concrete work as shown here.

Are you from the UK Christopher, from my point of view anything is possible if you put the right procedures in place, give people enough notice, I have closed of many a road in my time even in busy city centres on a Saturday to errect a crane with all that entails. It not all about cah being slid under the door in an envelope.

I am in the UK, and around where I live it is common knowledge that it goes on. To such an extent that it is now a joke. As for closing off roads, to do that job they would use a concrete pump, either lorry mounted or a small trailer one.

Yes, my beauty sleep is any disturbed and I yes, they know the right person on the council! I complained there with no result.

My road is closed for THREE month + and the way from my door to my garage is 1 1/2 feet pass. :-(

I pointed that out to Andrew Jameson who I don't think believed these practices go on with the local councils, but you have just added further proof to my reply to him, - it's not a case of "what you know", but in my Country "WHO you know".
