Ten years have passed since this was recorded, and they are still unique and special. That’s quite remarkable, isn‘t it? It‘s not just the fusion of musical genres, but also the dancing, the energy and the positivity that makes them stand out, especially if you look at their live shows.

Yep, they are young and cute here. Check out a recent live performance and they’ve leveled up in many ways. The two remaining original members are 25 years old now, and the youngest is 21. They don’t have that shock value of babyfaces but they have a confidence that comes with ten years grinding in the music business.

But 15/10 years ago i too got bored of the metal world until I discovered J metal/rock and Babymetal ( who i have seen many times now ) Band-maid , Nemophila, Lovebites , Hanabie, Fategear, Bridear , Aldious ..the list goes on . A lot of classic rock fans dismiss or even hate this music , but i think of my self as open minded and progressive .

Great reaction and welcome back. As you noticed, this is very different to 'Gimme Chocolate' ... the next song will be different again. 'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for favourite song - they have also played it live more than any of their songs. It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks are so prominent in the video🦊) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.

_Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥 Glad to see you're back with this suggestion, they were quite young in this one but wait to see Doki Doki Morning or Iine!!, you can enjoy this song with the live sound of the Kami Band at Budokan 2014 or Budokan 2021 with the new formation. Fans were enjoying and having so much fun watching this live every night at the World Tour 2023, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans when performing live between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown. This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 (Yui and MoaMetal )and 15 yo (SuMetal, the lead singer), so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri). "Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them. During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance. In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox. "Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself. When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it. Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts. The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary: The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘 Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀 This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want. Next suggestion to enjoy a brand new collab while is hot: - F.Hero x Bodyslam x BabyMetal - Leave It All Behind official MV Btw since you mentioned Electric Callboy, they're gonna attend FOX_FEST (a BabyMetal festival) next May 25 along with Polyphia. See you next time. 🦊🤘🔥

Thoughtful, intelligent commentary. I noticed that some of the folks who really know Babymetal have already commented before me so I'll keep to a couple of personal thoughts. As you noted this video is from 2013. One of things I don't think Babymetal get a enough recognition for is how they've paved the way for so many of the artists-particularly female bands-from Japan who are now making a mark on the west. These gals here have been working and performing for over 10 years and are still going strong and always expanding their musical horizons. I completely get what you were saying about starting with early stuff and seeing BM's roots. It will be an amazing ride and I look forward to watching you take it. Kitsune!

At the recent shows, I bought a single disc of Megitsune and listened to the 'air vocal version' of the song, and I realised that the song has many Japanese elements of music in it. So you don't need to watch this MV, just listening to the music of the song, I was convinced that is why it is so popular in foreign countries. Thank you from Japan!

There are a number of Babymetal videos out there with English subs added, but sadly none of the official videos have them. Babymetal recently did a collab with Body Slam and F.Hero, and that one has subs if you want to check it out. As far as more videos/songs to watch next, here would be my top 3: Road of Resistance Live in Japan: One of the best live performances Babymetal has ever done and a great song in general. Monochrome (either live in PIA Arena or the First Take version): The PIA Arena performance is fantastic and shows them at their best, while the First Take version is piano-only and really showcases Su's vocal talents. It's also one of their newer songs. Ijime Dame Zettai (live at Sonisphere 2014): IDZ is an anti-bullying song, and this performance marks the time when Babymetal really broke out in the West and started to become especially popular.

OK - Ill give you some advise on listening. Take it or leaving. All live, where others is not said. Some of those have initial solos by the Kami band. That is a treat. They are GOOD! * Headbanger: Legend 1997 (2013) * Yava: * Catch me if you can: Sometimes introduction by the Kami band * Road of resistance: * Tales of destinies: This one is prog * Sis Anger: Black Babymetal = Moa and Yui (This is the second hardest they have made) * GJ : Black Babymetal * Pa pa ya: * Rondo of nightmares: Introduction by the Kami band * Doki doki morning: the original MV. It is their first song. It is so good and it is so cute as they were 11 and 12 years old. * Babymetal Death: Legend 1997 - this one shall not be approached before understanding what it is about. This is the hardest they have done.

Yeah, if right shall be right, their latest (Metali) is also good. But look at the MV. Generally, I think their golden era was 2010-2018. They were small and cute and most of the bangers was written. It is something very special to see 13 year old girls just owning it with 50.000 in the audience. Total audience control!

One more important comment. Not only was Yui and Moa very young, they were also chosen because they were unusually small and cute. I know you guys said it would be nice to see them grow, but I can't avoid suggesting their one of their recent songs: "Metali" featuring Tom Morello!! It's another very Japanese themed song, it would make a nice comparison with Megitsune. And, btw, the first time she said it, was right: "thai-ko". Japanese "A" is very open, never changes sounds (no Japanese letter does it) and it sound like the "A"s in America. 🤘🏻🦊🤘🏻

Good reaction. Welcome again to the crazy universe of BabyMetal. BabyMetal is an atypical heavy metal group, because they are idols. In Japan, idols are often paired with pop music (Jpop), and Babymetal was actually a subgroup of a larger idol group called Sakura Gakuin. Sakura was made up of girls between 10 and 15 years old dedicated to Jpop. When SuMetal (the singer) started she was 12 years old and MoaMetal/YuiMetal (the backup singers) were only 10 years old. Sakura represented the Japanese high school and the girls were distributed in clubs (traditional Japanese extracurricular activities such as cooking, swimming, basketball, sewing, etc.). One of the producers, a lover of heavy metal, saw that Su's singing could perfectly be used in metal and asked permission from the Mother House (Amuse) to create the heavy music club, proposing an experiment in fusion between metal and the pop. Nobody, as they themselves have confessed, had much hope for its outcome, but they gave it the green light and thus BabyMetal, Sakura Gakuin's heavy music club, was born. The first songs were intended for girls between 10 and 15 years old, who were Sakura's target audience. However, their quality and the fusion between pop and metal attracted attention beyond this audience and they began to frequent their metal concerts... a shocking audience of children and metalheads. And it worked, it worked so well that they began to support groups like Metallica, Red Hot, BMTH or Lady Gaga, I seem to remember, on their tours in Japan. And the Red Hot singer commented that he was impressed to realize that part of the public came to see them, not them. And so the base of BabyMetal fans grew. Sakura was a group in which, upon turning 15, the members had to leave (to pursue their careers elsewhere) and the producer (KobaMetal) requested permission again to create BabyMetal as an independent group. Success was already beginning to become a reality in Asia, so they authorized it, although Moa and Yui (they were still 13 years old) would also continue to be part of other Sakura clubs (I don't know when the poor girls studied, but they did). In 2014 a milestone would arrive in the group's history. They were already an established metal group in Asia that sold out concerts, but they had not yet made the leap to the West. In that year his song "Gimme Chocolate" rose to fame on KZfaq (currently 182M views) and attracted the attention of the producers of the Sonisphere festival. KobaMetal had doubts about taking the step, since their musical proposal (Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal, a genre of which they are considered creators) might not be accepted in the West and the metalheads who went to the Sonisphere had a reputation for saying goodbye to very bad manners to the artists they didn't like (even with bottles full of urine), but they were offered to go to one of the secondary stages (about 5000 spectators) and they ended up accepting. But the success of BabyMetal on KZfaq and the fact that all the concerts they were going to give in Europe were sold out in a few days, convinced the producers to take them to the main stage, where they would share with groups like Metallica, for example. How many girls (they were between 16 and 14 years old at that time) were "terrified" before going out, and they didn't know what scared them more: that they wouldn't understand their music and they would have to run away or that when they went out on stage it would be empty. . But the story was very different, not only was it not empty, but more than 50,000 metalheads, an estimated 95% of whom had never heard of them, finished their fifth and last song chanting "another one, another one." And that's how they achieved popularity in the West as well. They currently have 4 albums on the market: -Babymetal (2013): Their first album and the most childish of all, since they were between 15-13 years old when it came out and had energetic, positive music that left a smile on their faces. -Metal Resistence (2016): an album that, without losing the essence of the first, shows more mature music, going from childhood to adolescence. Songs like Karate were a large part of his presentation in the West. -Metal Galaxy (2018): a turning point in its style. Without abandoning their energy, they turned their attention to new forms of metal fusion (hip-hop, dance music, Hindu music or European folklore, among others), projecting a much more mature music in keeping with their age, which was already around 21 years old. of Su and the 18 of Moa (unfortunately Yui left the group due to health problems). And now in 2023 they have just released their new album "The Other One", which is, again, totally different from what they have done until now (one of the hallmarks of BabyMetal is that their songs are usually very different some from others (although they are all positive adrenaline releases). Currently BabyMetal is considered the most important Heavy Metal group in Japan (I'm not saying the best, that's for everyone to decide) and the most influential in history in the West (it has reached levels that no other Japanese heavy group has reached before). ). The journey through the Babymetal galaxy may be long, but it is certainly entertaining and with a few songs it drags you with a smile into the fox hole

Yes, they have carved out a new genre called "Kawaii Metal" - roughly translated "Cute Metal". While slow to catch on with Japanese bands, Korean bands have embraced it numerous times. This song's title roughly means "Vixen" - the protagonist is a Female Kitsune (or Fox) whose true nature is hidden underneath traditional Japanese culture. The Middle Eight (or Breakdown) is taken from the Japanese traditional folk song "Sakura, Sakura". This is a milestone song in Babymetal's catalog and has a lot of meaning. For a comprehensive look at the song see Professor A.J. Hartley's excellent breakdown. Here is the link but if it doesn't take just look up AJ Hartley and "Megitsune" to find it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6yKkseFrsmVY5c.html

The song is basicaly about women empowerment, stating in how some cultures women are expected to "act" a certain way, smiling on the outside while crying on the inside. The scene where Su pulls the tanto from her mic, she is quoting a line from a famous Japanese gangster movie. In that scene the boss' daughter says, "Maiden.....should not be underestimated."Su-Metal (Song/Dance) is the lead singer of the group. Moa and Yui(scream/dance) are more like cheerleaders. they get the crowds reveed up during live shows, though they do sing. there are 4 songs thay Moa and Yui do as a duo under the name Black BabyMetal. Yui was a member of the group until she left officialy in 2018 citing health issues. In April of 2023 a performer names Momo (who had been acting as a Avenger, backup dancer) officially became a memebr of Babymetal making them a threesome again.

Sad to see some people still think BABYMETAL is just a gimmick, novelty or cheesy/computed generated sound without any sense of depth to their music, they were never a gimmick to begin with. At first sight it may look silly having very young persons acting in a cute way & dancing to METAL, the fact they were put together makes it "worse" for some people to understand them but BABYMETAL is simply about making real music, passionate music with genuine intention behind it, a lot of people try to define them as a specific genre when they can be whatever they feel, music itself always come first, genre doesn't really matter if your music is soulless. Their choreography is more theatrical and technical than just a theme being vaguely utilized in a shallow way to appeal the audience without effort. Their instruments are their voices, body and music, some people has prejudice with them for not playing instruments as well, a very shallow mentality in itself. So not surprised to see some people trying to offend BABYMETAL by using weak arguments here in the comment section, they fail to realize what's really important. The girls came a long way, it takes a lot to do such a hellish routine and front a band the way they do, nothing was given to them. They had to earn the legendary status they have today all by themselves, they didn't had supportive fund, but the talent, passion and effort payed off. They did something impossible, their live shows are the most transcendental experience someone could ever witness and their interaction with the crowd is immaculate, they proved to be a real METAL band since the beginning. All the elitism is really forced but anyway... Nice reaction 🦊🤘 If you want info about how BABYMETAL was created I suggest watching a guide video by CripticMisery on YT, it's the longest video. Edit: Ah, also BABYMETAL is the best METAL band ever! Just saying lol.

She pronounced the drums closest to correct. Japanese vowels are consistent in sound (unless they’re being devoiced but that’s a whole other thing). So they would be A= ah, E=eh, I= ee, O= oh, U= oo (like food)

BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of these recommended songs (along with suggested versions): Doki Doki Morning (official music video) Iine! (official MV) Gimme Chocolate!! (official MV or Legend 1997 Apocalypse version) Megitsune (official MV) BABYMETAL Death (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version) [for those who are religiously sensitive, see the Budokan Black Night 2014 version] Onedari Daisakusen (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version) Song 4 No Uta (Budokan Black Night 2014 version) Uki Uki * Midnight (Budokan Black Night 2014 version) Catch Me If You Can (Budokan Black Night 2014 version) Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Live at Sonisphere 2014 version) Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version) Road of Resistance (Legend 2015 New Year Fox Festival version) Karate (official MV) Meta Taro (Five Fox Festival version) GJ! (Fox Festival 2017 version) Sis Anger (Fox Festival 2017 version) Shanti Shanti Shanti (official MV) Pa Pa Ya!! (official MV) BxMxC (official MV) Metalizm (official MV) Metali!! (official MV) I would include the links but, for some reason, KZfaq sometimes thinks I'm posting spam and will delete my comment. For the links, see the KZfaq playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty”; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list. Anyway . . . . Another recommendation (read "challenge"): react to an entire BABYMETAL concert. I suggest "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" and/or "Budokan Black Night" (2014). There are playlists for both on the HEAD123456 KZfaq channel. Both concerts are, in a word, incredible. Keep rockin’ BABYMETAL!!! KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

Yes, Sumetal does the main vocals- the entire act was built around her. Kobametal, their producer (and originator of the entire concept), obviously has an unmatched eye for talent. Moametal and (now) Momometal are perfectly capable of singing and commanding the stage by themselves (there are videos of both of them doing so), but this is the setup. I saw them perform this in Dallas last year- other than seeming a bit more relaxed about it, it's just as energetic and amazing now.

This was filmed in a real Noh Theater stage. The drums are largely from the Noh theater four person orchestra and not all taiko drums. The Noh orchestra is called a hayashi orchestra and is made up of four instruments: fue (flute) (there is a simulation of the flute sound in the early part of the song in the background), kotsuzumi (shoulder drum), ōtsuzumi (hip drum), and taiko (stick drum), these four instruments are also known as the shibyōshi. The "bass" drums are larger taiko drums mounted vertically. So the drum set is very connected to the setting of a Noh theater orchestra. Pretty cleaver really.

Great reaction, and good analysis! *Megitsune:* (Meh-Geh-Tsoo-Neh) = Female Fox / Vixen, traditionally derogatory term for a conniving female. *Song’s meaning:* Ancient maidens live on within us. Women were always actresses, crying at heart but smiling at face. We are not deceptive, but pure-hearted female foxes. What it means to be an ideal woman is changing as with women’s fate to bloom and fall, so we shoot up our fireworks in the sky. *Tanto/Knife in Mic Part:* “Maidens…. Are not to be underestimated!”This is a quote from a Japanese gangster film. Same vibes as quoting Scarface, but a ladies’ version. While this is a great Music Video, Babymetal is known for their live shows. Suggestions: *Headbanger (Legend 1997 Concert):* Another hard driving quintessential Babymetal classic. *Road of Resistance (Official Live):* An insanely epic anthem, and a staple show closer for a decade. Look forward to more Babymetal soon!🤘🦊

You'll find no two songs sound alike with Babymetal .. many many surprises constantly around every corner! An anecdote. My wife and I saw them twice in Texas last year and even being in their mid 20s now, their stage presence and relentless energy is just stronger! They are SO much fun and their hard work is inspiring! Also, yes, it's built TO shock people at first. The dichotomy of sounds between the dark heavy metal and the high pitched childish kawaii voices is the point .. but the difference in sounds have become a lot closer, partially due to the music evolving with their adult voices, but they're still as kawaii and fun as ever. I hope you enjoy more!

And about the Story of this itle, it is based on an old tale. There are foxes that can change into humane and so there are human women to live their life as humane and suddenly humane are on their Trailer and they leavevtheir life as a human and have to flee as a human. Whatvthe girls do: the tell thecstory from the perspective of a fox. They don't do anythingvevil but they are pushed by society into different roles. And this song became a Signal of Babymetal. Zheir Manager wantedvto get rid of the devil sign and he changed it to a kitsune, a fox sign, and with this title the sign got a new meaning. While the girls arecstill young, they survivedca lot, They lost one of their members in 2017 and in 2018 she decided to terminate her contract with Babymetal due to health reasons, they lost their guitarist (stargazing from the top of a concert hall), a multi year trial period with other dancers and in April 2023 the remaining Avenger became the New third Metal Momo-metal. And they are still qzite active, last year a World Tour with 97 concerts and more than 250.000 guests, or their current Collaboration "Leave it all behind" with F. Hero and Bodyslam.

Agreed!! Their live shows will blow your mind!! Saw them in Vegas last year with Dethklok. Best concert i've been to in years. Their Japan shows are flat out epic!! Check out Metal Kingdom Live & you will get an idea. Like something straight out if Game Of Thrones!! Also recommend Rondo of Nightmare Mischiefs of Metal Gods at Budokan Live. Think Su-Metal was like 16-17 in this now classic performance. Tales of Destinies Live at The Tokyo Dome is also recommend. Which was a tribute to Dream Theatre"s Dance of Eternity. 🙀💕 I also recommend checking out Kingslayer Live from Nex_Fest with Bring Me The Horizon which was epic!! Their latest Leave it All behind just dropped a few days ago. Which feat Thai Rapper F-Hero and Thai Rock Band Bodyslam. Might seem like an odd combination but Babymetal kinda makes s*** work when you least expect it. Great reaction BTW!! 🤘🦊🔥

Well they didn't had muchvto docwith J-Pop or K Pop but a lot with J-Metal at that time. You have a Manager who was a Metalhead and he was worried, he met older and older guys, and suddenly he was responsible for young girls (idols). Abd suddenly he got an idea, what would Happen withba mix, hevgot permission from amuse (the talent agency) for a hard Rock Club, but he got no Budget for this Club. He Motivation some girls to join this Club (They were afraid of Metal...) and the girls even had to work for the Club (opening malls and department stores (normal idol work)) but he made with them their first music Videos and their first concerts and they got bigger and bigger. Amuse suddenly got interested in a professional role, but they had different visions. He gad the idea of a new genre but in fact it always stayed concentrated in his group and what really stocken him as well as Amuse They became the internationaly most succesful japanese Band. And while they never directly attracted kids they have about 40% female fans and all ages between 5 and 85. They are more than 10 years on Stage and their fans got older abd hace their own kids. And while no one send his own kids to a metal concert it is quite common that kids together with mommy or daddy visit their first metal concert.

iirc the Guitar like instrument in this is a Japanese instrument called the Shamisen. Another song that I can think of that uses this is the opening theme from an anime called Mashiro no Oto (English name "Those Snow White Notes") it is by Burnout Syndromes and the song is called Blizzard. Unfortunately I couldn't find a live video that included the live playing of the Shamisen that wasn't a cover, even the official music video for the band is animated, and the videos of the bands live performances that I could find had the Shamisen from Tape/playback by the looks.

It's difficult to explain to people who aren't really familiar with BM just what a big deal they are ( not only in Japan but worldwide ) This is a band that was formed in 2010 ( consider the fact that Su-Metal has just turned 26 ! ) and over the past 14 years have either opened for , toured with or collaborated with some of the biggest bands in Rock and Metal - Metallica , GunsN'Roses , Korn , RHCP , Sabaton , Bring Me The Horizon , Tom Morello , Rob Halford to name but a few and in addition to their own recent sold out World Tour have played , and are scheduled to play , at many of the biggest Metal and Rock Festivals in the world . They are the real deal and have earned everything they have achieved by their own incredible work ethic and talent
