@@nowornever_aus Im a retired chippie I worked on steel framed houses for about 4 years and would take one over timber any day of the week , they are so straight especially large ceiling areas they are so flat and look so good, also if you built caravans why did you buy a timber framed van ? I would never buy a timber framed van for the reason you are finding out ,good luck with your repairs thanks.

Hi guys. Our caravan has been redone in front because the previous owner got rid of the window. What they did was replace the total front with white checkerplate right up to the top. It looks great.

Love the confidence mate. Your missus looks exactly like mine when doing something sketchy and I say “ trust me “. 😂 I’m rebuilding an old van for my boss at the moment and we are reskinning the whole thing in white composite panel with a 600 mm strip of checker plate ally around the bottom. Got the checker plate powder coated black and it looks a treat. Wasn’t very expensive either. Good luck with the build and Erin might find a bit of rum or bourbon will make things look not so bleak 😂😂😂

Not surprised, that's why I built my van steel frame, composite panels, 18 mm , 18yrs ago, It's amazing where water will get in, The bottom edge on that caravan will certainly be stuffed, Yous may get lucky, Seen so many caravans with same damage, Got yourselfs an interesting project, Good Luck😃🤠🦘🦘🇦🇺

Nothing more frustrating than water damage in your van. I have faith in your ability to fix Bertha, Alex. Erin, you may be nervous of the scale, but one bite at a time in the work to a new look, water tight Bertha.

Thanks! Not all timber frame vans are bad, as long as they are sealed right they are usually fine but usually you don’t know it’s leaking until it’s too late unfortunately

You’re up to the challenge and I think your plans for a more square bottom will be better for fixing the chequer plate particularly the bottom edge being 90 degrees. If your replacing frame with timber I have heard of marine builders coating in some product that basically makes the timber waterproof, that might be worth investigating too. Like someone else said , the clearance lights might also have been a source of water . Glad the top half is ok 😊. Completely get Erin’s nervousness, however everything is fixable , time and funds and have a go attitude mixed with skills… I am even watching all ads up to 3 minutes just to help you get something hopefully from KZfaq to pay for more staples😊😊😊

Your got this in the bag, your vision of how you want it is by far the best option, my brother did the same thing. Luckily my best mate has a sheet metal fabrication shop and we bot all the aluminium checker plate cut and folded through him. Best of luck.

I'm renovating a 1970 Chesney and the frame is all Alloy, there's no doubt that it's a much better material to build caravans from.

Just a NOTE... Don't leave your 400ampa straight on the concrete floor , as the floor will drain your battery flat.... so place it on a milk crate or wood. Plug in a trickle charger while your repairing van. Cheers , enjoying all your videos .

Hi guys love your Reno videos ,we have a 2011 Retreat Macquarie which we love,originally we had 2 front windows which leaked replaced them with a composite panel ,we have checker plate half way up the front ,we’re now doing the same on the back due to hail damage cheers

Good luck with all this guys. I had a 2001 Goldstream poptop that we did a lot of repairs to because of boot water entry damage. The main problem is it is such a big learning curve. Meranti is a terrible van building material, it has a natural bacteria that runs away once wet, you can dry it out but it will still rot. The other issue with the old aluminium sheet panels is the many joints and temperature changes, they pump tonnes of moisture laden air over the years. I could still get the aluminium sheet panels from Camec when the van was written off by hail damage in 2022. Keep the same profile and buy yourself an AC TIG welder and refab the front frame assembly out of 25 x 25 SHS aluminium and some flat sheet to get the curves then sheet it a sensible height with the 2mm checker plate then finish the top with a polymeric backed aluminum powder coat panel. You will also need to remove the LH side panels to repair rotten timbers and sheet also with the checker plate on both sides.

Now you have the scope of the damage. Great plan to fix. How do eat and elephant, small bits at time. I have no doubts on your skills and you’ll make this even better than new. You did great on refurbishing and repairs why would this be any different. Just make sure you vent the lithium to go with new laws. The alum cladding is still available but black checker plate sounds more appealing.

The front boot bung was actually regulation for front boot fitted gas bottles back in the day.

Tip,if you choose to put the diesel heater tank in the boot make sure you put a breather to the outside otherwise you will smell diesel inside van! From my experience 😊

Hey guys... what a bugga that turned out to be... Love the idea of squaring off the front and pitting a box there. Not sure how far back this is... but I had a thought, if your putting the diesel heater tank back in there, maybe face it the other way and cut in a fill point fron outside, you could use one like they do on small boats, where the cap screws on and is flush with the exterior... just a thought.. Good luck with the rest of the repair.

That’s not too bad. That was what ours was like under that same kind of padded vinyl crap. Never will I put that vinyl stuff on the front of a caravan. Our j mould was not sealed properly either (scrimped on the silicone under it) and water got in that way too but definitely around the edges of the vinyl when it got old a started to crack and pull away from the silicone edging. Replaced all our front with tread plate. And v4 from bostik is the stuff to use to seal up under jay mould and the edges and around window frames coz it cleans out easier if you have to remove it and the time will come that you want to or need to replace j mould. With window frames I put thin closed cell foam on the inside of the frame and then sealed up the edge with the v4. Did the same for the boot frame which is pretty much a window frame.

Some manufacturers used (use) treated meranti and it holds up much better to leaks. If you didn't already do this, I'd suggest treating the timer with something to protect it from the inevitable water ingress. Penetrol of all things can work quite well. A good thing about wood is you can repair it, aluminium frames when damaged can be a different story from what I understand.

Definitely invest in checker plate for the front of the van. If you take out the curve, will you lose space for the battery system?

Typical water damage. Squaring the front to put a toolbox on makes sense. Have thought of using a sheet of 18mm ply for the front framework and then fix the propeller plate. It gives you good fixing and is way more stable than a matchstick frame.

Would the drain holes in the front boot not be for hoses and condensation? I don’t think they plan for water leakage?

Not for hoses, potentially could be for condensation but in that case I would assume every hatch would have a drain hole

No thankfully we haven’t had that! We did experience that in our first house though with mould under the carpet, it was horrible for them!

Mate do your self a favour and under seal everything as 99% of silicone is not UV rated same as roofing your house silicone can not be exposed to UV
