We had a few of these back around 1990 that had been installed in Ford LTS9000 tri-axle dump trucks. For as small as these were, they were perky little motors and I found myself liking them. They didn't last very long but were available for about 5-years. Don't remember now why Ford quit making them but I was very happy with the one I had. Our trucks had the Eaton Fuller 8-speeds with double LO's riding on 22.5" lo-pro's.

8 liter engines in tri axels ? jesus
@kingjames8283 Жыл бұрын
@@lol-fv7ug - Yeah, the power and torque numbers weren't all that great but that little damn Ford motor and the Eaton 8LL and the right rear-end gearing made that baby move on down the road with 73,280# gross weight. I don't recall anymore why Ford quit using that motor but for local hauling it was great and then about the same time Cummins came out with the L-10/300 and all the trucks we ordered after that came with that motor until Cummins quit making them and then it was Detroit Series-60 and I've never looked back and still running the same engine in 2022. When it hiccups, I send it out for overhaul/rebuild and keep putting the miles on but it's getting harder to do as parts are now becoming scarce.

I had a 1990 L-8000 Toterhome that I pulled my funny car trailer with and it had the 7.8 and a 5 speed. That was a wonderful fig. I sold off the funny car operation and now I wish I had kept the motor and trailer to haul the nostalgia front engine dragster in. That engine always started and ran smooth, never complained on the hills it was also very fuel friendly. Just a good old rig.

Sure have heard of a 7.8 Ford. They put them in New Holland Genesis tractors with 10 fewer cubic inches. Mine is EXTREMELY frugal with a gallon of fuel. No intercooler on mine. I plow snow, haul rock and dirt with it. 15 ft contractor style bed, scissor hoist, 6 speed Fuller with 4.88s. It will run 70 MPH empty, 60 up hill with 20,000 lbs on it's back without to much whining. No, it's not big or fast but I can do a lot on a gallon of fuel and that counts for a lot.

There reliable just not powerful. Our 1 axl dumb truck has the same motor and it will only run 55. But it does have a good bit of tork it will pull our 10 T backco and 5T gooseneck trailer pritty good. In first gear it goes up to 5mph😂 wich is good for pulling. It will run about 40 pulling that load. The most we've hade it pulling is about 7 T of rock in the bed 10T backco 5T for the trailer so 22T or 44k lbs

I drove one of these w/ a crew cab hauling a backhoe in FL. It was reliable, started right up, pulled well, but of course not a race car. Pre ABS , so watch it on a wet road. Another driver jacknifed his , tore off the hitch, and flipped the backhoe . I was fired because I picked up my kids from daycare one evening on the way back to the shop. The boss never had any children, I didn't care because it gave me the incentive to start my own business.

I always knew about the Ford 6.6L & Ford 7.8L in the F-650/F-800 but never saw one in person,they seem like strong Engines despite their size.The DT466 & DT360 from International Harvestor were competition with these.I was told that they were from Brazil and had some connection with Cummins while being used in Tractors once out in New Holland.I have a F-800 with a 8.3L.The Ford F-650/F-800's that I have dealt with are all Cummins,using the 12 Valve 6CT.That's what I'd rather use,which is a Caterpillar or Cummins.

That's a great find, the only thing it's lacking is AWD and a heavy duty winch on the front which would make vehicle recovery very interesting ,but it's still a very usable truck ,very clean and not too big ,you have a nice shop too
@Slim_Slid4 жыл бұрын
AWD is not the same as 4×4 or 6×6.AWD is when all Wheels are built on the Axles to be driven constantly.A 4×2 or 6×4 is when only the rear Axles are the Drives and the front Axles are just dummy units.A 4×4 and 6×6 means that the Truck doesn't have a Open Front Axle and it can be Engaged into 4×4/6×6 in either Low or High.Most to all of the Ford F-650/F-800 are 4×2 if I'm not mistaken.None of them are AWD.

As a former ford employee of 15yrs at a diesel dealership, before it became sterling(freightliner), I thought i would shed some light on the 6.6, 7.8 engine. These indeed were NOT strictly ford built. They were developed, and built, in conjunction with cummins. Hence, their good reputation.

The liner around the oil pan was an effort by ford to keep the oil temperature up during cold weather with lots of engine idling. You should have known that. Cat used a similar cover on their small 6 cyl diesels. It doesn't trap moisture because the oil temp in the pan will evaporate any moisture between oil pan and liner.

How do you think these engines are compared to the cummins?
@Slim_Slid4 жыл бұрын
@Warren I have a Ford F-800 with the 8.3L Cummins.The 6CT was also used from 1987-1994 in the M923A2-M944A2 Trucks from BMY Division Of Harsco,which were the 5 Ton 6×6 Trucks in the Military.They have 240 HP/592 lbs of Torque.The 6BT & 6CT are underrated Engines,they can handle up to 1,000-1,400 HP with Modifications.More than 300 HP will obviously shorten their life span.I had a Dodge 3500 with 400 HP/1,190 lbs of Torque,Stock I was at 215 HP/440 lbs of Torque.Right now I have a Dodge D-250 with 160 HP/400 lbs of Torque,but I'm getting it up to 800 HP/1,400 lbs of Torque.I had a M931A2 with 450 HP/1,200 lbs of Torque.The Marine 6CTA/6BTA are great resources for Interchanging Parts.The Marine 8.3L is 430-650 HP and then the Marine 5.9L is 275-400 HP.In the U.K.,they even use the 6BT in the Sabre and Sultan Tanks with 195-235 HP,aside from the 4.2L Jaguar.For the 6CT,you also would have to Interchange with a ISC/ISL Cummins because of the Bolt Patterns and Dimensions.You can use Bosch PV-7100 Injectors,5.9L Governor Spring,HX-40 Turbo (35-40 Psi of Boost to be safe),Intercooler,ARP Head Studs,and adjust the Fuel Screw.Anything else like Pistons,Gaskets,Cams,etc are what you need a Marine Engine for.Same way with the 6BT,you can also use the same Injectors and then Grind the Fuel Plate and watch those Numbers go up.

@Warren Just saying about the 12 Valve and how much durability they have,I love Ford and their Engines too,but Cummins is the backbone in Medium Trucks,Caterpillar is accepted too,but I like them in the Peterbilts alot more,for me it's Cummins or Detroit in a Medium Truck like the F-700/F-800.
@Slim_Slid4 жыл бұрын
@Warren Wasn't intending on a lesson,was just saying my experiences about Cummins,just about me,not you.I was blankly just saying how well the Cummins is for the Fords and other Trucks,without trying to compare them to the 6.6L,7.3L,and 7.8L.Talking about the 5.9L and 8.3L.
