Brass is softer than steel by a mile. Actually, leather will dull your tool a lot quicker. Try a punch with good quality tubes. What normally happens is that the tubes are low quality, so they dull faster. My cheap punch has CS Osborne tubes, and they last a lifetime compared to cheap tubes.

The brass leaves marks on your leather. Frustrating, I know.

I'm not the biggest rotary punch fan, but Mrs. Stacks is a horse person and loves them.
