Some notes about the composition as found on
www.jazzguitarcomprehensive.com/
Composer: Richard Rodgers
Lyricist: Lorenz Hart
Year: 1937
Origin: Introduced in the Broadway Musical I’d Rather Be Right.
Style: Usually swung, it is played at a wide variety of tempos.
Form: A-A-B-A (32 Bars) [8-8-8-8]
Verse: A-B (12 Bars) [8-4]
Rarely played, the first recording from Leo Reisman in 1937 features the verse which can be heard after the instrumental introduction. Ella Fitzgerald’s recording from 1956 also features it although with a noticeably different arrangement.
Key: F Major.
Harmony/Overview: The harmony in the A sections of this tune is very functional, remaining for the most part almost entirely diatonic. The bridge is however very inventive, beginning on IV Major before proceeding to modulate through tonal centers descending in Major 3rds with II - V - I's.
Recordings: This song has been recorded over 280 times to date. Leo Reisman and his Orchestra were the first to record it in 1937. It has since been recorded by countless jazz musicians and it continues to be performed frequently to this day.
