I am excited to watch this. I bought all the Dr PH Martin sets because the packaging showing off all the delicious colours at once in that lovely circle just got my juices flowing. I have had them for years and never opened a single bottle. Now I know what to do with them. They have settled a lot so it will take a bit of mixing to restore them but I can’t wait to use them. The transparency of the colours without mixing together is amazing. Thanks so much for this.

I think I enjoy watching your facial expressions as much as I enjoy watching you make art! I haven't used my acrylic inks a lot, but I do like to make collages of mountain landscapes using my gel plate made papers. Looking at your transparencies gave me the idea of doing the same thing with my landscapes. It will be a great effect to have so many translucent layers. I like to add water to the inks then use them as a glaze. Thanks for these lessons!

Thank you, Valerie - every week I have a conversation in my head - keep the facial expressions in or out. Keeping them in almost always wins because what I want to encourage on this channel is fun over anything else. 😍 Watering the inks to make a glaze is a fantastic idea - thank you for sharing. 🥰

Oh my dear! You were serving a colorful meal today 🍉🫐🍑 - or a bath. I was so excited watching your process and smiling and laughing with you and your smile and joy 🥳. I loved the result of the layering in your artjournal. An explosion 🌋 of color - but in a subtle way though. Great job, my dear. Pity, that the quality of the giant print was not transported so clearly to my laptop. Nevertheless: You inspired me to use my inks and I know the feeling, when material I hoarded "looks" at me and even "screams" at me to finally use it. I think many of your viewers know that too. So thank you so much for supporting my inks in their wish to come alive 😇 . Have a nice weekend, Jackie 🦋. Britta

Hi Britta! Yes, that day was a lot of fun and produced many giggles along the way! @@PaintedPaperStudio The depth of those layers you were building felt like looking through layers of glass (or another take on encaustic, in a way). Very exciting. And your idea about using glassine was so original. You asked how we use acrylic inks. I like working with them on watercolor paper, using water on the page first, then dropping inks into the puddles, then letting it sorta roam around organically -- also using movement, air, tools to guide the flow into something. I also add Winsor and Newton watercolor granulation medium. It kinda breaks apart the pigment when you drop a bit on the wet inks for some really amazing texture! This was so inspiring, Jackie, as always! Thanks much.

These were beautiful. Interesting to know that the medical exam paper turns out so transparent. I took an art course years ago and we were taught to make monoprints, which is basically the same thing you are doing with a gel plate. We just taped some plastic (we probably used plastic bags, because we were taught how we could do things inexpensively) down to our table and laid paint down like you did on the glassine, and then laid art paper on top to pick up the print. So perhaps you could try plastic instead of the glassine when you don't want it to buckle. There are so many cool ways to do art, and I love what you showed us here. Art can be so much fun, and can be done without a huge cost outlay. My very favourite tissue came in some packaging. I have no idea what it is, but I have had so much fun using it! Thanks, Jackie!

If you roll out gel medium over your gel plate before you apply the acrylic ink it won’t bead up at all. I like using matte medium but it works with gloss too. I usually use acrylic inks on tissue paper. I lay it out onto plastic sheets or even parchment paper, then I spray it with water or even tea for a vintage look and then I drip and splatter ink from the dropper. Or sometimes I add air brush medium or pouring medium to the ink and then drizzle and drip it onto the dry tissue paper to give it a different texture and look. I’ve also used gel prints (also in tissue) to do these techniques so that I could have a partially obscured pattern or image underneath the layers of acrylic ink. It’s really endless what you can do. I haven’t access to wet strength tissue paper, so I have only ever done these techniques using the plastic sheets behind the tissue paper to support it while it’s wet, and I think that the tea bag paper would be really fun to try this technique with next time I try it.

I was so excited to see this week’s video as I have been debating between buying more acrylic inks vs acrylic paints for some colors missing in my palette…the one factor was how I could use the inks (which I prefer in general) on the gel plate. The air brush medium is a game changer….wow! Do you think it would have the same impact with Golden high flow paints on the gel plate? Do you have any idea if Pouring Medium would work in place of the AirBrush medium?

Also, does the gloss make the paper shiny or does the absorbency of the transparent papers mitigate the shine?

Hi Ramona, thank you for your kind words and for watching. I have used rice paper (both hanshi and hosho). I like them for gel plate pulls and painting papers, but I've given up using the hanshi paper when working wet - it just falls apart too easily. The honsho paper stays intact when wet, but it's not translucent or transparent at all. Medical exam paper can go completely transparent, hold up to water incredibly well and is incredibly inexpensive. Here is a link to a video I did recently comparing many different paper types testing for translucency and transparency: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJh_qZOlyrq4iac.html I hope this helps. 🥰

No problem, Betsy 😀. Medical exam paper is different than deli paper. It does not have a waxy side, but it does have a shiny side. Some types of medical exam paper have 2 shiny sides, but the one I am madly in love with is the type that is shiny on one side and crepey on the other side. I'm still experimenting with the medical exam papers, but I have to say, they've become a favorite for many reasons. 🥰

If you treat your plate well it will last a very long time. [Do not use anything sharp and keeping stored correctly] I have had my larger plate for about 4 years and it is still in almost new condition. They are so addictive. Jackie, wonderful video! I used your link to the medical paper and noticed that it is “crepe” texture, not smooth. Amazon does carry the smooth textured one too. Do you prefer the crepe for some reason?

Great question, Nancy! I have 2 small rolls of the smooth paper and a ton of the crepe-style paper. Both work well, but I much prefer the crepe-style. It is much easier to handle when wet. I hope this helps. 🥰

Wonderful inspiration! I’ll have to give my acrylic inks a whirl. BTW is that plastic needlepoint canvas under your gel plate? Doesn’t it leave grid marks on the plate? Always looking for something to put under mine that helps it become more mobile…

Hi Kathryn! Yes, you must give it a whirl, it's so freeing 😍 The substrate I put that gel plate on is a piece of mesh shelf liner. it's soft, flexible, and does not leave any marks. I'm pretty sure you can get it anywhere. 🥰

Is there a reason fluid gloss medium is better than fluid matte medium? I'm trying not to buy too many mediums, like I did in my early days, and now have containers of EVERYthing laying around for years with no idea what's better, best, and what's unnecessary. Thanks!
@PaintedPaperStudio

Great question! Neither is better than the other, but I use each in very specific ways. Matte medium is my workhorse - I use it for nearly everything. Gluing in collage, mixed colors, barrier layers, etc. I use gloss medium specifically when I want certain papers to go translucent and/or transparent. I also use it when I am unsure how I want the final finish to appear. If I want a satin-like finish, I'll use gloss medium for the project and then do a final coat matte medium to bring down the shine. I completely understand not wanting to over-buy (even though that is a problem for me 😂), but if I had to choose one it would be matte medium first...and maybe a small bottle of gloss medium, just in case. I hope this helps. 🥰

I JUST NOW in today’s mail received’Amazing Gel Prints’ by Elizabeth St. Hilaire. Great book for beginners. It does not however include Acrylic ink as a medium so thanks Jackie for sharing! One thing though, I heard the inks stain your plate? If so, having one designated plate for inks may be a good idea. Can you or anyone discuss this issue?

Hi Trini! I wrote a whole response, and for some reason it's not here. 🙄 I heard the same thing about inks staining the gel plate, but it didn't happen to me. Maybe the inks that stain are oil-based or alcohol based? I'm not sure, but I do know that even if my big baby of a gel plate got stained, I'd love her just as much. 😂 Further tests will be done. Again, if anyone has specific experience or answers for this, please respond. I bet Elizabeth's book is great - have fun with it! 🥰

Where do you get all these papers from?? And where can you buy a big gelli plate from?? As I live in Oz and cant find a place to buy them. Or they are sold out.

Sometimes it is hard to access the materials I use in my videos - I wish I knew a way to make it easy globally. I just checked Amazon Australia, and I found all the papers there (the medical exam paper is a different brand then what I listed in the description - it's Vakly). The giant Gel Plate is sold through Jackson's Art AU, but I don't know if they are available now. I hope this helps. 🥰

Hi Jackie, there was a video of yours that I watched a long time ago that had a unique paint that looked like rust when you used it. I cannot find that video for the life of me! Can you either direct me to the video, or remind me the name of the product please?? Thanks!
