Fun vid, will point out that the whole "Aztecs thought the Spaniards were Gods" idea has largely been debunked. It seems to have arisen after the Spaniards were invited into their city and treated courteously as guests, with some reports even that they were addressed as lords and the King offered Cortes his throne. However even if we accept that these reports were accurate, it was likely more supposed to be interpreted as something akin to a power move in their culture. Sort of an "I'm so confident in my authority that you can sit in my fancy chair and enjoy yourself for tonight" message. Why the association with Quetzalcoatl specifically seems to have arisen from the fact that after Cortes turned on the Aztecs, he relied a lot on nearby city-states that were unhappy with Aztec dominance in the region. This was for a number of reasons, but one seems to be that the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan was considered an important pilgrimage center for offerings to Quetzalcoatl, which meant that many of these peoples might have been interested in helping Cortes for the purpose of taking that city for their god from their rivals. Combine this with the fact that these pilgrimages likely continued for quite a while after the Spanish had taken over the city but before they forcibly converted the native peoples to Christianity, and it doesn't take much for an egotistical Conquistador to decide that the natives bringing all of these offerings to this city you conquered to decide that they must actually be bringing you the offerings.
