There is no washer thats why most mechanics dont know about them, it is a thrust bearing along with shims of various thickness to get the correct end play of the up and down motion that he mentions.

it's appreciated he added this video seeing there's not a lot about king pins. this how ever is misleading. that's not a washer it's a thrust bearing and shims can't be bought separately but if they could it would make no since and be a waste of time to pull the king pin replace those and not replace the bushing and king pin chances are the bushings and pin is wore out and you'll be tearing apart again soon. the pin set for a freightliner is about 300 just do it right.

That bottom "washer" is a thrust bearing...
@davidpennington9125
@davidpennington9125 2 жыл бұрын
Well I'll give you credit man you're absolutely right about that and yeah you're also right about those wheel bearings it is good to periodically just retighten those to spec because yes over time they do need to be retightened that is true
@SimplyTHC
@SimplyTHC 4 жыл бұрын
If you have play in your king pin. Its needs to be replaced lol . The bottom of knuckle contains a thrust bearing and washer . Top portion has shim or shims installed . King pins have bushings that get worn which allows the up down play . You can adjust the wheel bearing nut but that is not recommended as you will be messing around with the bearing tolerances. Which can end up burning out and your entire assembly falls off as speed and you will need a lot more then just a king pin rofl please seek a Professional! I've been a technician almost all my life an I love to save people money but what your saying it NOT SAFE in my honest opinion. I live out service manuals and yeah some things can be overlooked but I wouldn't risk it
@truckerbuddy3035
@truckerbuddy3035 4 жыл бұрын
The thing is even if you could buy the bearing and shims by them self you would still have to pull the king pin to do that at that point why not put a new pin in and bushings. He said the set is 800 it actually about 300. each to there own

when the tires are off the ground, push on the top of the tire (wheels straight ahead). if there is play, have someone hold the brake pedal down and test again. if the play is still there- the bearings are NOT the problem. if the play disappears then the bearings are loose. spin the tire as fast as you can- put hand on the brake chamber- if It feels rough, the bearings are bad. the bearings have a spacer between them. no adjustment necessary, if the bearings are rough or have play- the chrome is flaking off and YOU NEED NEW BEARINGS, NOW! spin the tires very slowly and watch where it stops. if it stops in the same position several times- your tire or drum are out of balance.

Looks like the tire is worn down to the ware bars on the inside edge of the tire. The king pins may still be within spec, however there is some ware involved. Therefore your alignment is toed out due to the kingpin bushing ware. Have the toe angle put in spec and you can get many more miles on those king pins without killing your front tires!

Is he talking about the tapered roller bearings inside? usually found in preset hubs as well as standard. (adjustable at least/ on standard). but i dont believe he stated this clearly enough. bushings on hub rear/ king pin. should be replaced anyways. i’m not sure, you’d check that way either. usually checking bearing endplay with dial gauge would show you bearing looseness. this test would be before doing bearing test, so i can see how this makes some sense i guess. just my take

I’ve been working on Semis for 19 years ... the washers wear because the kingpin is bad ... you will be replacing the washers soon ... oh and your nice “cheap” steer tires .... it’s not a lie ..... And it’s the same labor rate to replace the shims as it is the kingpins

Videos and information like this is how people get killed. As a mechanic everything in this video is wrong. You have thrust washers and a bearing .. when a kingpin is replaced, you replace the bearing, bushing , kingpin and thrust washers… you keep adding thrust washers to take away the play. You don’t just add washers if you start to get play later on. That’s backyard crap. As for his comment about adjusting the bearing, that’s also garbage. If you have play you don’t just adjust the Hub nut. Those nuts if doubble or single are torqued to a certain spec. IF it has a cone , it’s also torque to a certain spec. If you have play it needs to be taken apart to inspect the inner and outer bearings ( they might be screwed). Good sign bearings are screwed is when the oil turns silver.

Was your steer tires wearing excessive on the inside? Mine is and I'm getting flat spots on the inside within the first 1/2 of the tread from the inside. We bought the truck used and already had the same wear pattern and unfortunately I blew it. It's only on the passenger side.

you are mistaken the king pin will have already pounded the Piss out of the lower and upper cap usually ruining the kingpin by peeing the top and bottom. l know sir for I work on them and have 3 different mechanics lisences. car & truck &heavy truck and coach as well as heavy equipment and l have driven truck for 40 years.

I work at a shop where we use Freightliner trucks. I have a few where I have done alignments on and changed the steers with new and balanced tires. I still get driver complaints about their trucks pulling even though the alignment machine says the truck is good after running it a second time. Could this kingpin be the issue? I specialize in tires and alignments where I work at but am trying to learn other things.

S Cargo 8 will lift it (steer axle/one side Safe) 12 is better I would recommend might as well get a 20-ton. Most trucks the "thick" washer has bearings inside of it, the other ones are actually shims , the way you check the actual Kingpin, and or axle bushing wear Easier is to put the bar in the hole of the rim, (near/to break drum) pull up while holding the top of the tire (feal/See wobble) the Kingpin will wobble side-to-side in the axle IF it's worn. I've literally changed hundreds of King Pins and bushings in 29yrs but never had to on a Cascadia (yet). can actually put the bar at the top of the wheel in hole, for the same check then rotate it to the bottom is usally the easiest way to check for side to side wear) a tire bar is the perfect tool :-) or long Sturdy pipe. crowbar works but longer the better :-) normally you will Notice in the tire wear. great info Vic Med!! Blessings to you all..!! :) (also the Best way to grease kingpins/washers is to have the axle lifted, tires off the ground) don't see anyone do this Anymore

If someone Decides to crawl under the vehicle and or take a wheel off, a 6 ton jack stand works for Safety per wheel as long as you Don't have a Loaded trailer on it. :) They are CHEAP at Kragen/O'Reilly I've also got the 20-22 ton bottle Jacks there in the *PAST*... for $20 & Sam's Club have used them for years. Kingpin BUSHINGS wear. The washers are beside the point. The bushings protect the axle from wear and protect the knuckle from wear. Your going to cost yourself much more money . Try this instead. Lift front end of truck from under center of steer axle. GREASE the top and bottom grease zerks with a quality grease turning wheels all the way left to right while greasing the bushings and the weight is off the front end. Do this every 90 days and you will not have problems. But your way is not the right way you will see. If you can’t afford to take care of your truck the proper way then maybe you should not be driving it. You become a liability to the rest of us on the highway

Dealerships do not sell BEARINGS by themselves- they come in a kit- including the pin, grease seals, the Bearing, washers of different thicknesses ( which sit at the top between the steering knuckle and axle), guide pins, and sometimes lower/upper caps. Your king pins are bad, I can tell by your tires. You definitely need new king pins, new tires and alignment and maybe check the camber alignment coz I see your tires are worn out inside.
