Thank you so very much Sandy for the shampoo analogy and the best information I’ve heard yet, on these markers. I invested thousands of dollars and purchased every single Copic color marker. I have enjoyed using them for several years, but now I struggle with them drying out and getting my refills. I’ve looked at other brands, but hate to not get my moneys worth out of this huge investment. Thanks for sharing, and for your time and dedication to crafters everywhere! I think it’s awesome that you’re donating your markers and hex chart to others who need care and love.❤️

As Tim Holtz says, you do you. For me, after saving up for months, i bought a brand new pack of Copics. When i opened them, it turned out 8 were completely dried, and a half dozen more had broken tips. I cant afford to waste $$ on supplies that don't even work. Maybe there was a time when Copics were worth this kind of money but it certainly doesn't seem to be true anymore. Picked up a set of 36 Ohuhu skin tones markers about a year ago and they've been working wonderfully. Now that they have refills i won't ever risk trying Copic again.

@@SandyAllnock1 it was through one of the larger online craft retailers in the US. After a lot of back and forth, they refunded me minus the cost of shipping it back to them and a restocking fee. They refused a full refund because they said there was insufficient proof of when the damage occurred and I should contact Copic for a full replacement or accept the partial refund from them. I contacted them within 8 hours of it being delivered (I was at work) but apparently 8 hours between delivery and my email meant I could've damaged it and then tried to get a full refund. I gave up after a few weeks of back and forth with both companies. It really soured me on both brands though. Edit to add: in Copic's defense, I didn't think they were wrong in their response that it was the retailer's fault/mistake. But I also don't see how it was a good business decision for both companies to just point at each other in blame. Especially since I now don't buy anything from either one of them.

So I got a bunch of my Copics from Michaels. and A few were dried out. A trick I've learned to fix dried copic and ohuhu markers, is simply put nibs or dip the marker in isopropyl alcohol. Somewhere in the high percentage range like 90ish%. This will allow the marker to get moistened and then after a few seconds pull the whole Nib out and soak it in the alcohol for about a minute. Once the bubbles stop, your marker will be good to go.

I prefer the Copic over the Ohuhu for the nib and the color system, and I prefer the Ohuhu over the Copic because I haven't had any of them drying randomly like 8 of my Copic :( I hope that Copic will improve that someday. Thank you for your work 😊

I don't have any of these markers, but you did a great job explaining about intellectual theft that is rampant today. There is a new site, which I am sure you are aware of, that is going crazy viral and is almost all rip-offs of products. In the craft field, there are many people who have stated that they "are not rich" and justify buying these cheap supplies. It is a sad state of affairs. Thank you for standing up for the people who have put so much time, effort and money to develop the supplies that we all know and love.

Another fantastic video. This is the problem across the board with art supplies. (and basically any product) Sometimes you do have to pay for quality. But considering the quality products last long enough to balance out you really are spending less in the long run. Professional water color is my favorite example. Ohuhu is the best for those that use it and can afford it. Ohuhu is mostly for beginners and kids, because parents, in this economy, cannot afford Copics , OLO or sketch markers. At least they have individual markers, refills and replaceable nibs (selling on their website) and won’t dry out (I now have 25 Copic sketch markers like that) and end up in a landfill. FYI, not all Copic colours match their caps either. Thank you for creating their hex chart, a lot of people will find it useful, such as myself. Those children or adults will benefit from your donation. God bless and keep creating. 💜💛💙

I was influenced. I know who you are talking about and i did make the Ohuhu purchase shortly thereafter. I love these markers and i will be slowly (very slowly) adding to my collection but it will be higher end markers. I didnt think of these things because i was reading an article about why Copics are soo expensive and they said it is because of taxes and travel fees? Something along those lines. When i saw that it really kinda made me think that these could be made cheaply and sold cheaply. It never crossed my mind they could be using cheap labor or questionable materials. Its funny because i am aware of those practices but i was still influenced. Wow. Thank you for this raw truth video. You are right it is hard to get decent blends with these and the color names and number system is wack.

Yes, it’s very easy for that to happen! Some people make it seem like the product they’re pushing is better than sliced bread, and they avoid sharing any negatives. Because then they wouldn’t make money off of it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Alas. As for why Copic’s are more expensive- I’ll guarantee they’ve got lawsuits all around the world for everybody trying to mimic them, for one. All that garbage costs the consumer. They do seem to have cheapened their manufacturing process (I haven’t experienced it since I haven’t had to buy a marker in the last 8 or 10 years) but they really have honed the manufacturing and materials over the decades. When they made changes a few years ago, it was the children of the founder taking over. Not sure why they made the choices they did but-as I said they did it too fast. And that invited everybody to jump into the market.

After watching the video, I agree with you - mostly. Piracy, child labor, unfair and unsafe labor practices are all 100% abhorrent and I do my best to look behind the brand when purchasing. However, not all products with the same look and feel as a "oldie but goodie" are pirated. It is possible that there are IP licenses in place to enable some of the "similar but different" form and function in these cheaper marker brands. Lots of companies make HUGE amounts of money by licensing their patent rights - even to competitors. I have no idea if it's the case with Ohuhu or the other cheaper brands, but it is possible. I'm not defending Ohuhu (I actually got rid of a set of Ohuhu because they were so frustrating to try to group/blend and the colors were 'blah') but I felt compelled to raise the possibility that they are above board.

So first I'd like to say, I appreciate your research. It seems you put in a lot of time with it. When you indicated that the Ohuhu markers are "not good" because of the price, this are my thoughts....what if, what if Copics are just severely over charging us? What if none of us actually know the true cost of making these markers. Many artists are just starting out and can not afford Copics or the other two you discussed. Many are working for free for other companies in hopes to make money on their art one day. The nib critiques are all subjective. There isn't a right and wrong nib, it's all a matter on what works for you. Now I agree, Temu is awful. They steal so much from so many people. Ohuhu, to me is a great alternative to alcohol markers. They now have refills and replacement nibs. I see nothing wrong. If we gotta deal with inaccurate color caps and names to save the 💲💲💲 then i think that's a fair trade. They do come with a swatch chart.

So Sandy it looks like most of your comments are from people who largely or completely agree with you. I don't. I'll explain why to you in the same way you explained to us how knock off products get it done so cheap by comparison. My first point is to parallel to the argument in support of piracy; it's not theft because I was never going to be a paying customer so no money was lost. Copic markers are $8 a piece. The Blick studio markers I have (24 of them) are still quite expensive. In order for me to get a good set of blending groups for ROYGBV + portraits + neutrals in Copic or Blicks or Sketch I'd be spending hundreds of dollars minimum. I'm a filthy casual coloring junky but I'm pretty good at it. I don't have that kind of money for Copics. I was never going to be their customer. I use at least 60 colors per coloring page usually, and the set changes every page I do. I've probably used 200+ of my Ohuhu 320 set. I'd have spend thousands on a similar set of Copics. Consider that what you're suggesting is tantamount to poor-shaming people. "Cant' afford a Ferrari? Then don't get a fast car! Your old Camaro cut corners. It shouldn't exist". What I'll say is keep in mind that we're all in different financial places in life. Edit - Also I'm getting the hex chart you made. I think it's excellent. And I like the valid criticisms that you offered about their color system.

I’m not at all worried about Copic losing money. They’ve got gobs of it. I’m just applying the same standard to intellectual property theft as I apply to theft of, say, stamps from a one-person shop. No one creating an art product, big or small, should have their product stolen and remanufactured by someone else. It’s an ethical not financial argument.

@@SandyAllnock1 Yeah this is a more existential crisis for the small shops I think and I agree your argument is grounded in ethics at the end of the day. But you're looking from the supply-side. I'm looking from the consumer-side. What I mean is the financial barriers can provide as gate keepers for poor people quite often. And often they have to find creative ways to enjoy TV, movies, video games, and even art supplies with very few dollars to cover all their life costs. A lot of people are just subsisting. So what Ohuhu provides is an opportunity for someone in a hardship situation to enjoy alcohol marker art who would otherwise not be able to participate. There isn't a right answer. Just different perspectives. Excellent video. Edit: Also I'm about half way done with your hex sheet and I plugged it on the r/Ohuhu subreddit and people are interested!

@@TheMadscientist1980 thanks for helping folks connect w the chart❤️ I still stick w my ethical principles. I can’t afford Netflix and hbo etc so I make do with plain cable. I’m not entitled to things outside my price range because some must-haves like health insurance take up my money. Sure I could cheat and skate on someone else’s Netflix but-it’s not a must-have. Art supplies aren’t a necessity. Plenty of mediums cost a fraction of markers and can be just as fun and fulfilling🤟🏼

This is a bit much. Washed my hair with Albero V05 for years or Suave strawberry and I can happily report I am not harboring a toxic waste facility on my head. 😂
