I've only done a little Lua but I do have black belts in three other arts and I think the criticism directed at this video is misguided. Perhaps people don't understand what they're seeing. Yes, you can block a punch with a punch, and I know that's standard practice in Lua. After striking, the instructor underhooks, seizes the back of the neck, and pivots to throw. All solid, basic techniques.

It's the practitioner, not the Arts, the Lua that Olohe Solomen taught was brutal & meant to kill, It's not widely known that Lua was integrated into Danzan Ryu, by Okazaki Sensei. Silat is a beautiful art that integrates well with other arts like Kali in it many forms and I love learning all. Thank you for your observations, darklegended GT

@unsound000 While that may be true, it is also true that the punches he demonstrates in the start have NO power whatsoever. If he punches like that in real life he's going to end up damaging his own elbow.

I personally know a man who trained with this instructor for 6 years. One night, he and six of his other fellow students were trash-talking this instructor saying that he could not take them all in a real fight. The istructor finally tired of their razzing and told them all to step outside. A fight ensued, and my friend ended up with a dislocated shoulder, some had a broken wrist, one man had a broken leg. And they did not trash talk this instructor anymore. Only this morning my friend showed me the scars on his arm from his knife defense graduation tests, and pictures in his phone from the training studio where they had the dummies that they trained on, and a wall of wooden weaponry that has shark teeth fastened to them. My friend is a Sergeant at arms in a biker club now. He's only about 5 ft 6, but I have a lot of certainty that that does not slow him down a bit.

I come from a Kung Fu backround so I get it. However... Even some of the traditional martial artits I showed this to either laughed at it, or simply would not watch it. I'm sure there are other techniques this guy has are good. This one however, is laughable.

If you look at the start of this video, the guy on the left throws a punch... the guy on the right simply throws a straight punch... Is that supposed to somehow deflect the other person's strike?? NO! This is a horrible "instructional" video. The only thing he does right, is when he holds the guys arm after that horrible "instructional" throw. Sorry, but this sucks.

Ok. We've been at this for a long time now. Here's my end point: I get that to demonstrate a technique, you have to move slow. I GET THAT. HOWEVER, You this particular technique is worthless. If he was trying to show a step by step, he failed. I've talked to many martial artists and even shown them the video, and just about all of them said that this video is crap. There is no real application to it. Don't get offended little guy. And i get "traditional" techniques.
