The ways you can avoid the problem or minimize the impact, as far as I know and used to do, is: prepare and anticipate the waves by moving backwards and forwards, then sharply dive into and against it under the top (easier if you touch with your feet) just before it breaks. If you are caught by surprise or miscalculated something, are at the top of a big wave about to break (and obviously can't touch with your feet), I think the best is still try that, though I've never tried it with huge waves!

You stop trying to get away, and instead turn around, swim directly at it and dive under just before it breaks on you. It's the only way, works every time. Just make sure to get all the way under it.
