This is a juvenile Cooper's Hawk, proverbially the REAL "chicken hawk." Historically, Cooper's Hawk, a type of accipiter or "bird hawk" would sneak into chicken yards and coops to catch a chicken and sneak out low and quick. Meanwhile the farmer would find a hen missing and, seeing a Red-tailed Hawk soaring overhead or perched in a nearby tree, blame (and often shoot) the Redtail, which many people called "chicken hawk." This young Cooper's got into the hen house, wrecking havoc with the hens, but could not find the door back out (being confused by the windows). It was an intense learning experience for a young Cooper's Hawk. Thanks for rescuing it. Paul M. Roberts Eastern Mass Hawk Watch

It was such a cool learning experience for my son and I. to have that as an example in life that even though animals and humans are at odds. And we may be enemies. We have that responsibility to be good stewards of them and their Home in whatever capacity. It was an honor. Plus we got to meet an animal spirit

The hawk knows where he can have his chicken buffet. He will be back when he witness you leave the house.

I never understand WHY you release this Killer..he will be back again....I had this trouble too and I got rid of the hawks and I now I have no more problem.:)

killing predators and/or punishing them teaches them the price of their hunt....

It’s funny you ask. This is a community farm with particular rules or restriction as in any town owned farm. When I caught the bird I showed it to the farmer and he said like any farmer would say “so you can’t kill it” as I’m a volunteer I let it go. I have to say though. It being my first time handling a bird like this it was amazing to see such strength and how fragile it was at the same time. Thank you for your post.
