Hawker Snacks: Why Are They More Affected By The Pandemic? | On The Red Dot | Singapore Hawkers

The Changs make curry puffs with a twist. Gina’s vadai recipe once saved her life. But dine-in restrictions during Phase Two (Heightened Alert) this year has disproportionately affected snack stalls Gina’s Vadai and Wang Wang Crispy Curry Puff. With diners prioritizing staple meals for takeaways, these snack sellers have seen their sales drop by 30 - 80%.
But having survived crises and personal tragedies in their decades-long history, pride in their craft and innovation keep these snack makers hanging on.
As restrictions are lifted and diners return from 21st June, hawkers are breathing a sigh of relief. But with no confirmed successors in sight for Gina and the Changs, the future of their stalls remain uncertain.

Everyone please help and support the hawkers. They risk getting covid to continue cooking for us and wearing their masks while cooking in the heat. I really hope they can survive this pandemic and can still be there to cook for us when we can finally go back to Singapore.

These hawkers make a living by selling food to residents and people from all walks of live. A pandemic like this hit, it completely hit them hard. Imagine its like office workers getting a big paycut or losing a job. Another food type I can imagine to be receiving hard; ice desserts like ice kacang and beverages etc. How many will tabao a coffee or canned drink home... 😥

Wang wang curry puff is the best curry puff i have ever eaten in Singapore. Tried all 4 flavours and still purposely travel few times to Old Airport Road hawker to buy from them. The layers of the skin are so crispy and fragrant! It is so therapeutic watching the owners handmade on the spot. I hope they survive thru COVID-19!

I think it actually depends on the hawker centre location. Those in the more central location suffered, but those in the neighbourhood actually do better. My friend’s dad runs a fishball/fish cake stall in Tampines actually sees business improves quite a lot during lockdown. Cos most ppl work from home will Davao from hawker centre near home

Business people - Your business - is your greatest prejudice: it ties you to your locality, to the company you keep, to the inclinations you feel. Diligent in business - but indolent in spirit, content with your inadequacy, and with the cloak of duty hung over this contentment: that is how you live, that is how you want your children to live!

I wonder if the government even considers the impact on the F and B businesses before they implement their measures. To what extent do they think about these small businesses when they implement their covid management measures? My view is that they don't seem to care about the livelihoods of these operators that have already had a tough 2020 and an even tougher 2021 during the first Phase 2 (HA). I think we must keep this in mind when we cast our votes at the ballot box at the next GE.

I don't know but these stalls can use either online or telephone order, all those customers who can't wait gotta do is come and pick up their pre-order at original price like here in Taiwan, not everything have to depend on delivery, although in Taiwan we have widespread discount price because ours is quite pricy, either way, depression, pandemic all this will be over, most important thing is that we sokong our brothers and sisters in this heritage of food. Don't worry about scaling, conserve the food culture if possible and the good times will come again.

you forgot that they quite aged and didn't know how to operate an app or similar. Like Gina (18:56) said "I totally don't know how to operate the handphone." and sometimes if you utilize an app, it will charge the seller some 'premium' commission. like how $1 priced $1.8 in the app.

The couple with curry puffs should train more people to do their curry puffs and so we can brand it as Singapore made....This is not being interfering and ending the business..The chain store can come later. They fry the freshly made dough so it remains soft and very pliable..it is different from Old Changhi curry puffs which is a chain but faithted to not innovate. It is clear people prefer the half oil half oiless dough..This is not just curry puff because it is "Indian" in origin..Someone should show them how to franchise their business around the world..Why don't they franchise? Why can't you start a curry puffs coffee shop franchise?
