Welcome back to Gator Overland. In todays video we go over Pros and Cons based on a 5000 mile evaluation of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon equipped with the 6 speed Aisin AL-6 manual transmission. This video includes an informative ride along comparing tow ratings of the manual vs. automatic, how i went about test driving to make my final decision on manual, and a brief Gladiator based manual transmission tutorial. At the price point of these Jeep trucks, deciding manual or automatic can be a difficult choice. This video could better help your final decision to go stick or auto, and/or give you the confidence to finally pull the trigger on your own Gladiator. Let us know how we are doing, please Like and Subscribe if you'd like to follow along with our overland build journey. Thanks for watching.

It’s a bummer that there are less and less manual shift vehicles. I love the feel of shifting. Also great video. Your channel is underrated. Great filming and great explanations.

Cooper Smith thanks for that comment, that’s great to hear! And i couldn’t agree more. We are in a world of advanced automation technology for convenience. I plan to keep this truck as long as the wheels spin, and for that, I will hold on to the manual lifestyle as long as I can to keep what’s left that era alive!

Just adding my feelings here Uncle Jessy. I just picked my Sport S model (I can't afford the Ruby) with the 6 speed and like he says if your not doing a lot of towing go for the manual. Shifting is smooth. I haven't driven a manual in 14 years (wow didn't think it was that long, But it was) and I got back into the flow of it with my Gladiator in 5 minutes. Like I said up above I did do a rookie move and stalled it 3 times on the lot because I forgot to disengage the parking break, but that was just me finally getting my first brand new manual transmission vehicle and getting over excited.

I bought a new 97 manual TJ and drove it for 7 years, loving every minute of it. Fast forward to now, a few vehicles later. 3 weeks ago I ordered a Gladiator with an automatic. I wanted a manual, but the practical side of me said these old legs might not like the shifting in a few years, so I opted for the automatic. The next day I saw your video and watching you shifting made me wish I had ordered the manual. After a couple weeks of coulda, woulda, shoulda's, the impulsive side of me sold my 06 Mustang convertible (automatic) and yesterday I walked in and ordered my new Wrangler Willys 2 door soft top MANUAL!! I can't wait till it gets here and have some driving fun again! I think your video kind of pushed me over the edge - ha!!! I really enjoyed your vid.

I really appreciate that parson! I honesty think its harder on the knees to get in the truck than it is to shift, good knees or bad 😂😂😂, the transmission system is so light and smooth to operate .. worth a test drive for “sticks” and giggles at least. The auto route is probably better on all other aspects of driving convenience and towing. I’m confident You won’t regret your decision to go with the JT if you do.

@@GatorOverland Any chance you're doing a video on the recall? As a guy who would like to own a manual gladiator in the next few years that news hurt.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Brandt Munk i agree that was some unfortunate news, but to answer your question, I am not currently doing a recall based video as I am not experiencing any issues that would forecast clutch failure, and I’ve just rolled 5700mi. , nor have I received the recall notice. My build date was 10/23. Either way, it’s a warranty fix, so it won’t be a big deal on my end. All vehicles go through a case of hiccups at one time or another, so i wouldn’t let it discourage you, especially if you say youre looking into a manual gladiator in the years to come. It shouldnt be an issue by then. I’ll definitely document any issues that should present themselves before

The only issue I've had with my JL is the key battery doesn't seem to last very long and that is a lifesaver tip! No doubt!! I’d love to have my manual up that way in the next year or so. If i didn’t get the trade in value i did for my Z71, I would definitely have gone sport s auto (can’t get the 4.10 axle D44 with manual in sport/s) so manual rubicon it was.. I have not one regret. I see the LED’s are offered on sports now, if you can manage it, I would highly recommend over the std halogen option. I ordered mine and it took about 10 weeks to arrive.. I saw the next colors to be available are sarge green, gecko, and nacho... if the sarge came in a hemi option I’m afraid I’d be headed to the dealership to trade up, but I’m more than happy with my current configuration. Thanks for you reply! I would risk the deaf ear for that combo too. In fact I would go diesel if that happened as well.. the fiat inspired 3.0TD is quite the mighty mite for its size.. but unfortunately it will only benefit those that want to tow with a midsize pickup and for that reason I’m happy with the gasser manual. Thanks for the video! I myself own a 2020 Manual JLR (2 door) and did not know about hill-start assist... I am so turning that off. As I thought the stalling at stoplights was being caused by the auto engine shut off. I guess I need to test now with that off, thanks for letting me know about something I was not aware of. I also find the clutch engages late on this transmission compared to my Toyota FJ's manual trans, so it does have a different feel.

Hey! Thanks for the reply! You bet! You are probably correct about the auto start stop having something to do with it. I just hit the button with my pinky the same time I start the engine to disable it. I to have noticed the clutch engagement is a bit late, almost comparable to be being binary.. it’s either engaged or not, there’s not really an in between “riding the clutch” feel.. over the miles i have become more accustomed to the clutch operation and seems more second nature now. I have a 2 door JL Rubicon 6sps which was extremely hard to find on a lot. I installed the b&m shifter in my JL, it helped make the shifts even tighter and gave it a more gated feel. I'm really interested in the Mojave Gladiator but really want them to build a 2 door version.

Hey! Thanks for the reply! You definitely have a rare jewel. I’ve seen B&M’s shifter! Its outstanding!! I’ll definitely be considering that upgrade in the future. I absolutely love my JT, especially since installing the “ultimate” MOPAR kit. I thought the rubicon package was great, but this combo has it beat. I like the Mojoave platform, they definitely need an in between from sport and rubicon that wasn’t crawl orientated. Just wished it still came with the locking front diff and sway bar disconnect, but then I guess that would make it a rubicon with a stronger frame and a 2.7 crawl ratio. No doubt you will love it for what it is.

@@GatorOverland I heard a lot of negative things about the Mopar kit so I went with the Teraflex 2.5" kit for the same price. I did the Teraflex track bar and falcon steering stabilizer too, so we'll see how I like it. Should be done the installation tomorrow. I definitely agree on the front locker, I wish they'd more power in the Mojave, so it could be a real desert runner. A V8 or a supercharger would make it awesome.

Great video -- Thanks for taking the time to create it. I so wanted a manual transmission but there was no way my wife was going to learn to drive it. Quick dumb question, did you put replace the dash trim? My Sting Grey Rubicon has the standard rubicon red dash. It is ok, but I would prefer something more subtle. Great looking truck!

Ken Vanover awesome! Thanks for the reply! My wife is in the process of learning.. we did a crash course (🤔) the other day, and despite my assumptions she did quite well considering she’s never experienced manual on her 30 years. The dash color is associated with the seat trim..most rubicon models with black seats leather or cloth have red dash (i believe then exception is punkin rubicon has grey dash with black seats) all models with tan cloth or leather get grey and overland/high altitude get black.. a simple touch of vinyl and an exacto knife could fix your red dash if your looking for a simple project. I’ve seen some on the forums actually paint them and turn out pretty good. Enjoy your JT!

@@GatorOverland I have a question, my new JL Rubicon Manual has a switch to turn of auto stop/start. I noticed that the engine does not stop when I push in the clutch at a stop light. It just idles. So why have this switch when it doesn't even function. Going on that, do the manuals even have a auxiliary battery because the main function of that battery is for the stop/start system. Do you notice this same thing?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, everything functions the same as an auto with that regard and the clutch depressed is a ASS bypass.. and yes there is still and aux battery . if you release off the clutch while stick is in neutral and stopped it will turn off until you disengage the clutch.. I typically leave it in gear and depressed at a traffic light, though I’ve read depressing the clutch pedal for long periods is not good. The another assumed reason is for legality purposes. In some states it’s law to have the vehicle in gear when at a stop and the clutch depressed rather than sitting with the stick in neutral. In the event that there was an impact from the rear the movement of the foot off the clutch would result in stalling the engine and it less likely to coast even with the brake released due to gear engagement.. in neutral it’s a possibility that that a rear impact could send the car coasting into traffic if the break released..

My last 3 jeeps have been manuals. My Corvette Z06 is a manual. When I went in to test drive a Gladiator, I started with a manual, as I assumed that is what I'd be purchasing. I couldn't believe how soft the clutch was. No feel at all. Then I drove the auto. It is good. In Canada it's a $1700 dollar option, and as much as it pains me to say, it's totally worth it.

Gears due run fairly long, but the engine feels great at lower RPMs. My old Subaru hated anything below 2.5k RPM. I just bought a brand new soft top Gladiator Rubicon in gunmetal gray with LED’s, a leather interior, a 8 inch display screen, and last but not least, a 6 speed manual ! I traded in my bare bones 2017 2 door JK Wrangler Sport (which was also a manual), mainly because I wanted to get a new vehicle as my warranty was coming to an end, and because I needed something with just a bit more tow capacity. I recently bought a 2200 pound 17 foot boat with a 500 pound trailer, and my JK could only safely tow up to 2,000 pounds so I definitely couldn’t tow with it. My brother has the automatic Sport S Gladiator with the max tow package. Although his is rated for 7650 pounds and my manual Rubicon is rated for 4500, I’m a diehard manual enthusiast, especially when it comes to sports cars and off-road vehicles. I don’t like driving automatic and 4500 is more than plenty for me. I have actually borrowed my brother’s gladiator a few times when I needed to pull my boat and I found that despite the higher tow rating, the automatic 8 speed transmission was constantly hunting for gears when it was pulling the boat, and my total load was only around 2700 pounds. I had to put it into manual mode and shift it so that it would stop annoyingly hunting for gears but even then it would sometimes still automatically downshift or upshift... Also with the automatic Gladiator, there was no engine braking whatsoever like there would be in a manual when downshifting as you’re coming to a stop. I had to constantly ride the brakes which was annoying. I have done my research and found that the manual Gladiators are only rated lower than the automatics to ensure maximum clutch life. That means if the occasional need to tow over my capacity ever arose, I could safely do so as I wouldn’t be unstable and unable to safely come to a stop. It would just slightly affect my clutch life which wouldn’t matter because there would only be a handful of times where I’d ever need to tow over capacity, if at all. For smaller loads under a maximum of 5,000 pounds, I’m pretty sure the manual Gladiator will actually do a better job of towing than the automatic since you can choose exactly what gear you want it to be in and keep it there, and because you can engine brake when coming to a stop and driving down a hill. I had to wait a few months to even test drive a manual Gladiator, because of the recall for the clutch pressure plates on the manual JT’s, as well as JL’s and JLU’s. It was well worth it, despite having to drive 250 miles to find the one I wanted as there were no manuals near me locally, especially the Rubicons. I fell in love instantly when I test drove it and ended up driving home with it. The clutch was so light that it made my JK’s clutch feel like a tractor’s clutch in comparison (and I’ve always considered my JK’s clutch to be pretty light before I tried this one).The shift throws were also nice and short, about half as long as the JK’s, and the shifter was so light that I could actually shift it with just my thumb instead of fully grabbing onto it with my hand. Some people may find that the gearing is too tall but I personally love it. It’s great for off-roading and I never need to shift above 4th gear unless I’m on the highway. The ride is also a lot smoother compared to the JK being that it’s a truck with a much longer wheelbase, as well as Jeep overall improving the ride quality of the 2018+ models. I also love all the off road features I get on the Rubicon like the 4.10 gears, front and rear electronic locking diffs, electronic sway bar disconnect that also automatically reconnects, fox shocks, trail cam, pitch angle display, etc etc. All in all, I’m super happy with my purchase and super glad I waited out the recall so that I could test drive the manual and make the long 250 mile drive home with one ! Thanks for the video and I hope you continue having many happy miles with your Gladiator :)

I'm 56 and have had 12 cars, about half of them manuals. For those starting out, do not be afraid of a manual. You quickly learn it--it is not hard at all. They are made for everyone. I had a 2008 JK Unlimited Rubicon with the manual for 8 years. I loved the manual for all conditions except stop and go, as in traffic or when rock crawling. For offroading, my previous automatic XJ Cherokee in one way was better because the automatic made it easier to control momentum over obstacles. When manual shifting while rock crawling, it's easy to lose momentum.

I really want the manual but I want to at least be able to tow my classic car (3200lbs) once a year to a car show. I figure the trailers are right under 2000lbs. Is this not a big deal seeing how this is only a once a year thing or am I asking for trouble?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply and No sir, no problem.. I actually sold my 69 Chevelle just before ordering my JT.. I had every intention of pulling a few times a year with my manual. The limiting factors of most tow ratings is heat generation in extreme condition (towing in high altitude mountains, inclines, etc.. In this manual, the additional clutch wear is a limiting factor, especially since it’s the Same clutch that goes in a JL which has 3500lb tow rating. If you go rubicon the tow rating is 4500lb which puts you at the threshold of what is favorable load, but honestly I don’t think an extra 1000lbs is going to make much difference until you comes to stopping. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZZooMuQtMuqcmg.html This guy pulls 7k with his because he was ignorant to the fact that the 7650lb is for an auto sport s with max tow.. and 7000lb in an auto rubicon. If your mostly flat elevation I wouldn’t worry about it. Make sure you are geared right for your tires size, take your time and watch your gauges..you should be fine.. the suspension is the same as all the other models so load on the springs won’t be different.

At around 21:15, you mention a magnet in the key fob. When I had a Ram Rebel, before buying my new Gladiator, I had asked about batteries in the key fob. At the time, it was explained to me that the buttons require batteries to operate, but that when starting, it was just an RFID tag, separate from the battery. So just the presence of the RFID (unpowered) was enough to enable the ignition.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Жыл бұрын
That’s correct, but it has to be in close proximity of the start button and/or to press the start button with the key. When the battery is functioning properly as long as the key is in the proximity of the cab you can start the vehicle. Generally there is a dash notification that says “key fob battery low”

I have a 6-speed manual JL Rubicon and the 8-speed auto JT Rubicon. The reason I ordered the JT with the 8-speed is I’ve had issues with the wrangler and the 6-speed manual where thanks to the ESS. If I forget to shut the system off and try to take off too soon before the engine gets a chance to restart sufficiently, I can stall the motor and sometimes I will have to wait until the PCM powers down and then I can restart the car. When this happens I am literally disabled wherever this happens for about 2-3 minutes until the PCM resets. The clutch grabs high on the Jeep and definitely takes some getting used to if you transitioned from manual sports cars such as Porsche, BMW or even Vipers etc. The 6-speed shifts smooth enough for typical jeep driving, but if you try to shift like you were still driving a 911 / Z06 you will definitely feel your blood pressure go up. The 8-speed auto is great in the Wrangler but good in the Gladiator, this might be because the Gladiator is about 400 lbs porkier than its Wrangler counterpart and in so is a little more hesitant to upshift during similar driving conditions. In the end I think if anyone lives in more rural or suburban areas the 6-speed is great, but if you live in more heavily populated areas like I do in NYC (or plan on towing with the jeep), you are going to be better off with the 8-speed auto granted you do lose the millennial anti-theft feature with the 6-speed.

@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 3 жыл бұрын
I agree they missed the bar on strength of design going with Aisin AL-6, but the only problem being had at this time with the transmission is the clutch integrity. Design wise the clutch is the only limiting factor for the vehicles towing capacity, And that’s mainly to avoid premature clutch wear. I would venture to say that anyone focused on buying a manual JT isn’t planing on towing over the 4000-4500lbs it’s rated for anyway. A lot of folks see the 7650lb max tow rating as this great ability for towing... it’s still a mid size truck, capable of midsize truck duties. Towing more than 5000lbs in manual or automatic is going to be a less than desirable venture anyway. The diesel on the other hand would be my choice overall if I were towing.. yes it has has tow rating slightly less than the gas, but it’s because the weight of the Diesel engine engine and components are 500lbs more than the gas, Which in turn deducts from the tow rating, but that 442 ft/lb of torque is going to launch you where ever you need to go. If needing to comfortably tow over 5000lbs often, a 1/2 or 3/4 ton should be considered. Other than that, I have 18k miles of smiles in my manual JT and no problems.

A really great video for anyone that is thinking that an automatic trans is the only choice. And your "training" for millennials on shifting was perfect. Owned manual XJ and JK (30yrs) and they were great. but clearly, the 2020 manuals are far, far better shifting than my old 2010 JK. Maybe you will find someone that lets you drive an old JK, and you will appreciate your Gladiator even more. Sadly, only two trucks left that can come with manual transmissions, the JT and the Tacoma. But with the need for a 6.5ft bed, I just bought a 2022 F150 with the 400HP V6 with a 10 speed automatic. 😂 I appreciate that!! Yes I had a 79 CJ5 w/ AMC 304 and borg-Warner T150 3spd.. I know all about how nice these new models are by comparison.. my 285hp can’t touch 400 unless i hemi-up.. I still manage 18-20mpg with 400-500lbs of gear and 37’s, so it’s not too bad for a brick

I had a JK m/t and now a Gladiator Mohave m/t. Big difference in the manual transmission on the JL/JTs. And I don't miss the heavily vibrating shift stick in JK. JL/JT m/t feels like a car's m/t instead of a truck's transmission.

Wanted a manual so bad but got a sport s with the 8 speed because I want to tow my drift car across country, wanted the extra insurance that I could tow for 2-3000 miles at a time. Girlfriend now wants one now and I am definitely making sure it’s a manual so I can have best of both worlds 😂

Thanks for this vid! I’m about to trade in or sell my 2020 High Country w/6.2 for a manual gladiator. I’ll miss the heads up display and the POWER!, but I’ll welcome a stick shift back in my life, and not trying to park my beast at the mall!

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! About to roll 60k miles of a mile. I came from a 2014 Z71 and yes, there is a power decrease, but I never really used the Silverado for the power any way. No regrets going JT.. I love it every mile, every day. Let me know if you have any other questions.. happy to help!🤘🏼🤝

Going from a full size to a midsize, do you miss the interior space of the full size and was it hard to adjust? I’m contemplating getting a Gladiator, coming from an F150. I’m just nervous to downgrade with having kids. I don’t really tow, and payload isn’t much to me. I just need a bed for hunting, household chores, and other outdoor activities.

@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Hey bud, thanks for the reply! Sounds like you’re exactly where I was at.. I was hesitant of giving up the full-size life as well, especially the V8, I’m a motor head. The more and more I tossed around all the reasonings you mentioned i realized the only thing in the way of pulling the trigger on a JT was my head. Do I miss the extra space? Well it’s noticeable, but it’s just me and my wife and some pups and they don’t ride with me much, so I’m not using the space any more than sitting in the front seat and driving, just like I did in the full size. We do plan to have kids, so I’ve cruised the forums about car seats and people seem to be ok with it. If your kids are out of car seats id say youre golden. I think space reduction in the bed is more relevant, but I don’t need use of that all the time either. What I do like is I can reach the passenger door if I needed to, and I can bullseye any parking spot between two cars without having to do a multipoint turn. I would say the simple sacrifices have been more beneficial than not. Even at 6’-1”, It’s probably one of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve driven. I think the biggest sacrifice is to get past is the price point these most capable midsize trucks are at. I was fortunate to get a good trade in for my 2014 Z71 with 71k miles and the dealer did 7% under MSRP price, even with a special order, and I didn’t even have to haggle. It was a great experience. I don’t regret one mile in my JT! With that said.. enjoy your JT 😉.

@@GatorOverland I’m looking at a gladiator sport. The price is marked down big time and it has the 6spd. After new tires, I think the ACT clutch kit would be upgrade #2 I watched that vid of yours as well…this thing only having stock 260ft-lbs of torque and 4000lbs tow is lousy
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Жыл бұрын
You ain’t kidding! Yes, currently the clutch failure rate is only about 1%, which is under 1000 JL/JT’s (not that many, but the failure potential is still there) I absolute love my manual, and even Moreso with the new clutch system. I Absolutely recommend the ACT system, and you’d be smart for the upgrade even as stock for peace of mind. 🤝

If it’s a rubicon then it’s rated for 4500lbs, all other models are rated for 4000lbs, mainly due to the 4.10 gearing in the rubicon vs. 3.73 of others.. will it tow it? Absolutely.. the capacity limitation is to prolong the wear of the clutch.. if you’re not towing heavy often it should be fine.. I’ve towed a 6k load but I didn’t have to go far (15miles).. it did fine .. If your load is under the stated capacity then your golden.. you can expect 10-14mpg on flat terrain with a 2-3k load

I test drove a Manual Gladiator and really didn't like it, but I think it was because that Hill stop assist was on! Definitely need to test drive another with that off. It felt really weird.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I believe the hill assist had a lot to do with your driving experience… But I can’t say directly whether it is in your best interest to tow 3500 pounds or not… If you’re planning on towing at all with a manual transmission you should probably look into the Rubicon because it offers a 4500 pound tow capacity and the 4.10 gears.. if you go with any less model you are only optioned with 4000lb tow rating and 3.73 gears.. that said I know 3 rubicon manuals that tow 5th wheels often.. the issue lies with where you intend to tow.. if your flat land, no problem, if you’re in the mountains or hills it’s a lot to consider ..

I bought a manual JL and absolutely hated the clutch. It was way too soft and was crunchy. The flex plate was replaced twice and they just could not get the crunchy feeling out of the clutch. I also felt the manual was just the wrong transmission for the 3.6. The 3.6 has almost no torque below 1800 rpm. I sold it and bought the automatic. This is the first auto i have ever owned (at age 55) and IMO i believe it is a much better match for the 3.6. To each is own though. I'm glad your manual is working for you as I normally would prefer the manual.

Thanks for the reply! I explain the engagement at 13:13, but in hindsight I wish I included a clip during that 4low hill climb that showed the stick engagement. But it really Is as simple as I explained earlier in the video. It’s a bit tight the first few times you do it. Pro tip: it engages like a hot knife through butter if you’re rolling slightly.

i have a JT Sport and you can not release the clutch from a stop without giving it some gas. I do have slightly larger than stock tires and wheels, approx 33 x 12 on 20" wheels

Yes, with a sport I can imagine it takes a little more umph to get going. The 4.10s are no problem. When I went to 37’s the undergearing was very apparent, much like it would be for you with 373’s and larger tire size. I have sense regear’d to 513 and have no regrets. Best decision, especially if wheeling at high elevation

I heard you say the clutch engagement speed is 3-5 mph, in 4low would that speed be slower?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Ohh absolutely slower in 4Low!! 1mph, if that, and nearly impossible to stall.. it’s a beast in 4low & in 1st gear with axles locked. The video is in 2hi. In the video I was saying that 3-5mph is 1st idle speed.
Jeep FAILED on the JL/JT Manual Trans! But would I buy it again?
