Apologies if you've already covered this but a great trick for working on learning how much pressure you are applying is to use a bathroom scale. Put the pad on the scale and press down and you'll quickly calibrate yourself on how much pressure you're applying with your polisher.

I watched another video of a man who intentionally showed how much it took to burn paint. It took a comfortingly long time. It didn't happen at 5 or 10 seconds. I can't remember but I think it was 20 or 30 seconds. I remember that he said that if it is too hot to touch with your hand, stop. And if you smell anything, also stop. I say that because in high school we did a test for people to see how well they estimated a minute and some people went a lot longer. Count out loud and if you are in doubt, stop early.

I actually *love* getting the camping/hunting/etc. outdoor clients and their trucks. Those big ugly long scratches most of them get from branches while trail driving are usually very light and come out fast, easy and safely with 3000/5000 grit and a quick polish.. Always makes for a really impressive transformation and very happy clients who all have buddies with the same trucks.. I get a *lot* of multi vehicle and referral jobs from those kind of clients.. 👍👌✌

Hey man I'm just starting to get into detailing just on my own vehicles, and im just wondering if that guy had any product on the pads he was using or just a spray on product? In preparation for my up coming task i purchased a Makita sander polisher, I used one many years ago when i was a boy in the early 80s. Nick, thank you for this series of videos with the Optimum Method, as a drive way detailer and no one in my area to learn from. I have to rely on KZfaq , thank you for bringing in Yvan, and the Optimum System. My confidence has really gone up, I had a big fear of putting the DA on a vehicle (now on a practice panel I'm Goliath, just don't ask me to do a car), since your last video, I've ordered the Hyper Polish, and orange waffle pads, (already was an ONR user) and have crushed a few friends and family cars using your Optimum one hour paint enhancement method. And here we are now with my even greater fear....deep scratches, heck after this video I'm pumped to go out and do some. Any head light restorations planned? I tell you, you're doing all us of a service resurecting this Optimum Stuff. Thanks fir paying it forward. A couple of helpful hints for everyone, use a bathroom scale (your wife has one, she just won't tell you) press your DA polisher on it to get a feel for 5 lbs, and to time one second use the ol' one Mississippi, two Mississippi (lol, but it works) P.S. I'm not a pro and no I cannot get it done in an hour, more like double, for me, I'm happy with that.

All corrections are different depending on many factors, paint depth, which compound or polish, types of pad etc etc The old method of least aggressive first then adjust as needed is still the safest and best! Don't be lazy! do the job correctly, not as quickly as you can get away with!

Interesting how we say don't hold the polisher on one spot but these seems to work well with out burning the clear. But I own a Rotary Polisher and not a DA. So would this technique still be recommended?
@HawkProDetailing
@HawkProDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
I doubt this *exact* technique is recommended with rotary, but I would do some testing on your own and even ask Yvan. I think the hyper system is all about keeping paint cool and preserving clear coat. But in the real world, that doesnt always work for vehicles that are scratched or ones that we want to "transform." So this method fills the gap that some DA users have experienced with hyper system. I think the bottom line is there are MANY ways to get this result, but Yvan says this method for just 5 seconds is in fact safe. Did I answer your question or just type a bunch of words lol

I would take a methotical approach using a rotary. Of course, use the least aggressive pad/compound. Using the top 1/3 of your pad, buff with the scratch, then perpendicular in both directions, then in an X. That technique should blend the scratch......you may have to graduate to a heavier pad/compound, just always keep the machine moving.

man that's a great question....however, if you have to ask....maybe just use a DA? Rotaries are a totally different beast and Yvan says to run yours on the lowest speed...let the continuous action of the rotary do the work for you.

@@HawkProDetailing Thanks for the reply. I have been using a rotary for about 25 years. I have used a DA but not enough to be fully comfortable with them. So I will try the trick with the rotary.

Here's a better and faster way. Use System 51 polish with their dual pad. It will take out all the tree branch scratches. Water base so it won't stain plastic or rubber parts. Can also be hand rubbed to get rid of overspray. Cleans up with a damp micro finishing. Use it on my custom painting and regular insurance jobs. Great for factory paint jobs. You can buff out ( fresh paint) 500 grit marks. Best stuff on the market. One product does it all. Used on many SEMA show cars. Cuts buffing by 40%. Cleans up easy even if left in the sun for a week, without staining the paint. Priced competitively and no I am not salesman for the product. Just a very satisfied customer with decades of experience in the business.

Met the inventor 13 years ago at a swapmeet in LA Cal. Told my buddy about the demo and he got his sema custom rod finished in time. Saw the same inventor at sema the next year. I told the crowd of painters watching his demo. How would you like to see him take out 500 grit marks with no swirls or hazing( after he bragged he could). They all raised their hand. He joked that I was a smart ass and proceeded to do just that. Have used the product ever since. 3M tried to copy his patented formula. Their stuff is 👍, but not as agressive. Tried both. Product does not breakdown like regular compound.You can hand polish clearcoat black after sanding with 1200 grit and it comes up black black on fresh paint. One product does it all. When you buff make sure you leave a slight oily film and then wipe off with a dry micro finishing cloth or you will get swirls if you dry buff. Hope this helps.

@HawkProDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
Yessir! Dude I really like it with hyper compound. One thing I learned at training is how everything just works together. On their own some opti products seem pretty inferior, but when used together actually perform awesome. Hyper wool pad and hyper compound will haze the paint a bit but since this is a 2 step I'm fine with it. And the 555 method gets more aggressive if you need it. That way you can stay in opti system and not overthink it:)
