I just found out who John Mayer really is after watching some guitar tutorials. I thought all this time because of the media and his relationships with famous pop celebrities that he was some kind of Michael Bublé without any other musical talent than singing or some average guitarist like Jason Mraz, just playing 4 chords songs most of the time. It was really biased, I admit it. This video really blew my mind. He is great and talented. yes he would be one of the greatest guitarist if he played like this in the 60s when the soloing was still very young technically but in 2014 he really can't get this tittle because now jimi hendrix songs can be played that way by anyone, and even there are some guitarists like john petrucci, andy timmons, paul gilbert and lot more who can play like this with their pinky so john mayer is just a good guitarist but definitely not one of the greatest

John Mayer is a brilliant musician. He speaks through his guitar. You can see it in his face. Respect!!
@juancpgo9 жыл бұрын
John Mayer is amazing. Music is in the fingertips, a special sensibility. Mayer has that, like Clapton, B.B., Hendrix. Also music is about being in the moment, not anyone can do that. Jimi Hendrix was one of the most “in the moment” musicians ever, the pure power of his sound can give you drug equivalent effects, can build new connections in your brain. Clapton still amazes me more than Mayer because he's so fucking good with the way he plays in time, the rhythmic aspect of his solos, it's so fucking clever. And BB also amazes me more cause his vocabulary is just perfect, he comes up with licks that blow my mind. Santana too, he's got a way of picking the notes that is so unique, his mind is different u know. But John got the fingers just as good as these guys', and I believe he will soon achieve the stature of Clapton and BB. He playing Call me The Breeze with Jools Holland blew my mind, sounds damn good. I'm tempted to say Hendrix is almost untouchable for his ability of playing so in the moment, like Coltrane maybe. Hendrix was a force of nature, he was always in the highest highs, and I'm not talking about drugs, I'm talking about the way his mind operated. I don't think he needed the drugs to get there.

What truly separates Mayer from Hendrix, Clapton, BB King and Santana is that Mayer is a mediocre songwriter. Those other guys were great. Mayer - simply put - can mimic the notes, but not write them.
@caspervanhelvoirt9 жыл бұрын
Flike Are you actually serious..... Mayer is a far better songwriter than those guys, but maybe you don't dig his style, which is possible. But damn dude, take a look at Gravity, Belief, Come Back To Bed, Walt Grace Submarine Ride, Queen of Cali, St. Patricksday, Clarity, AND GO ON AND ON. John is a way better lyricist than those guys, + a better songwriter. OF COURSE it's partly a matter of taste, but in this case it's quite obvious.... No disrespect though :) I love Hendrix Clapton and BB! Santana I'm not so familiar with though
@juancpgo9 жыл бұрын
Flike I get u man. I think Mayer is a good songwriter, but he's a bit cheesy. I do respect more clapton songs like “Layla” or “Anyday” or “I looked away”, they make me cry and go to much deeper and more important places in my consciousness. Maybe Mayer hasn't lived enough. Music is really about living, it's where blues and jazz came from. Nothing wrong with pop though. For example, Prince does amazing and deep songs.

@billhassell4348 жыл бұрын
dontworrydon seems to me that Mayer feels the need to show off his technique but that it isn't always musical or fit the song. Jimi's solos were melodious and not just the need to show off his guitar wizardry. Just watch the clip where Mayer plays with Clapton on Crossroads and gets schooled by the old man on how to play a blues solo.

Chris Minneapolis You are wrong on so many levels. John Mayer knows what sells. But that doesn't mean for a second that his musical aptitude is to be questioned. Even his pop songs are different from mainstream pop artists. Pop helped him to come into the spotlight. From there on he has been able to inspire so many people to pick up the guitar. He has just nailed about every solo in every concert. He is a brilliant songwriter. Just go watch his interview for the release of New Light. Has collaborated with Barbara, B.B. King, Clapton and all of them have acknowledged his blues musicality. That must be for some reason. And if you say he has no soul, I don't even know how to respond to that. Maybe you are a rock.

Complexity doesn't necessarily make music better. It's how that melody connects with people emotionally. John doesn't try to fit as many notes as possible in every measure. What makes him so good to me is that he knows how to pick his notes to build a story that really connects with me. Listening to each of his albums bring me back to a previous chapter in my life or sometimes sheds new light every once in a while. Why do we have to judge everything to the point that it's either the best or it sucks. Enjoy it or find some music that connects with you.
