After a quarter century these well-recorded performances remain fresh. Sensitive unmannered playing.

One of my favourite recordings of the lobkowitz quartets! Thank you for sharing! ABQ make it still feel like Haydn but also show the connection to the next era. They deserve the reputation they got!

The greatest quartets before Beethoven Op; 59. Haydn was the man.

็He's very underrated, his works ARE good for your psyche, make your bad day better. Beethoven's works are difference story, clearer expression right! but they make me so depressed

shnimmuc It’s better not to compare these two composers; they are from different ages. The only thing they have in common is the ability to write quartets of the highest quality that stand comparison with those of any composer of any age.

shnimmuc Haydn’s quartets have really only been equalled occasionally, but never really surpassed as a body of works. Comparing music from different ages really makes no sense, it’s like comparing a steam locomotive with an electric train, or a main course with a dessert or any other metaphor you care to choose. You’re right though that Beethoven’s Opus 59 is another pinnacle of the quartet repertoire which like the Haydn, has only occasionally been matched.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 You over reacted to my comment. As far as I am comcermed Haydn was never surpassed in the quartet field. I was in no way implying that later composers surprassed Haydn`s quartet composition.

This is so beautiful! I think that Hayden is too underrated in our time. His music is magnificent.

The music appears like a fog, then takes some form, but at the end, it disappears into the sky with a smile.
