Does Haydn have any memorable melody in his symphonies at all? I swear I listened to like 40 Haydn symphonies on this channel they almost all sound the same and none of it sticks in the head. It’s so dull and bland. I know a lot of people who don’t like Mozart and prefer Haydn but mozarts Melodie’s at least stay in mind even after just a listen or two

This symphony is a lot earlier than it appears due to its number, it was one of the first he wrote and revolutionary for the time on several accounts. These earliest symphonies are simple and joyful. They're lovely - if you like this sort of thing. I do now and then. Later Haydn symphonies show him to consistently be the most inventive and interesting composer I know of. That said, like baroque music, you need to understand the language he speaks to understand his expression. This takes time, but is very much worth it. I didn't really enjoy earlier Haydn symphonies until years after I started listening. I recommend spending more time with the most popular of his symphonies, especially any in the numbers 80+. But also try 6, 7, 8, 10, 22, 29, 38, 39, 44, 45, 49, 53, 54, and 61. Another thing, Haydn's chamber music clicked for me earlier than the symphonies, the invention is much less subtle (and more dense). The string quartets are probably best for this. Haydn takes some time to appreciate his language but the fruits are unmatched. There is definitely a reason some people become so obsessive with his music. Some KZfaq resources that can also help unlock this world is 1) Richard Atkinson's videos on Haydn works, 2) The Atheist Codger's videos on Haydn works, and 3) Dave Hurwitz's Haydn symphony crusade.

@@dmachine07 I appreciate that you have tried to answer a question, but this simplistic caricature is as inaccurate as to fact as it is mistaken in judgement, and the misinformation it contains is part of the problem surrounding perhaps the most misunderstood of all the great composers.

@ Commander Ginyu Yes. Listen again.* It’s not.** Composers are like food - it’s personal taste, some things you like and some you don’t, and that’s cool. Different composers: Mozart’s music is cantabile in conception even when writing for voices (so too Handel and Schubert), whilst Haydn’s music is instrumental in conception even when writing for voices (so too JS Bach and Beethoven). In short: Mozart’s music is feminine, Haydn’s is masculine; put another way, Mozart is more interested in the sound of the notes, Haydn (Beethoven too) in what he can do with them. * Understanding a compose’s musical language is like listening to a foreign language you don’t understand - none of that sticks either. ** Says CPE Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven for three reasonably contemporary composers, the music historian Dr Burney, along with the 18th century public who made Haydn the most published and performed composer across Europe.

Lol those trumpets are only stuck playing like 2 pitches ahahahahah Serves them right as marching band trumpet players would just make their instrument into a meme and blast wrong pitches thinking they're being funny At least people could always improve

Natural trumpets in the 18th century were pretty limited as to what pitches they could produce.
