Absolutely magnificently done. Brilliant. FJ Haydn was a joker at times when they were with us. He would be having a ball watching this. Maestro Bernstein was a genius.

This may be, in my extraordinarily humble opinion, the mastery of what humans want to hear in a piece of classical literature. There’s nothing worth improving upon.

First time I have ever heard this piece, and still the best performance I've heard even after searching out many others here on YT. The tempo, precision of play, and clarity of tone are simply unmatched. Bernstein was clearly an amazing genius, and the hard work he did directing the musicians in rehearsal paid great dividends as the players of the Vienna Philharmonic did an incredible job here with but a few twitches by the maestro.

In this video, Bernstein is like the dude with the laptop and can of lager in The Sleaford Mods. That being said, for me, NY Phil with Bernstein performing Haydn = some of the greatest performances ever. Especially that extraordinary disc of 100-104.

I heard a story about Elizabeth Green, author of "The Modern Conductor" a book which has been used as THE primary textbook for conducting classes. She once told a class that she knew the secret to being a great conductor but she'd only tell them at the end of the semester after they'd worked very hard. So at the end of the semester all the students asked with great anticipation what this great secret was. She simply stated "the secret of being a great conductor is that you only conduct great musicians". This performance illustrates Ms. Green's statement perfectly! It's absolutely wonderful!

Was this toward the end of his life, when his dementia set in? lol Only joking. Brilliant. He had such a presence on the podium. Great communicator with his orchestra. They felt what he expected of them instinctively, so that only face expressions sufficed. Such a famous & memorable performance.

Bernstein joked about it once when recording a "Young people's concerts". He starts conducting the beginning of Brahms' first symphony, then steps out of the podium while the orchestra continues to play. He approaches the camera and says "See, they don't need me, so what is the point of a conductor?"
