shame on me for having discovered this marvelous music only at the age of 68, always thinking that Haydn was to classic, shallow and formal compared with Mozart and Beethoven... what a mistake, none of the two of them would ever have written a quartet without him...thanks to the Takacs for this "enlightenment"

Don't ever feel ashamed. Many go through life and miss out completely on this great experience. That's a real tragedy.

No shame, but indeed, Papa Haydn is the Father of the String Quartet for a reason.

@@MB-pm4xe Joseph (sic) Haydn established the string quartet as a genre in which all the greatest composers poured some of their most profound thoughts, and were most critically judged; he set up over his 68 string quartets composed between 1757 and 1803, one of the monumental pinnacles of western classical music that has never been overshadowed, and only occasionally equalled. No such person as Father of the string quartet, nor symphony, nor anything else - it’s just clickbait, and Haydn’s Papa was a master wheel right.

@@elaineblackhurst1509 He is the first composer to take the string quartet as seriously as he did, in that sense I think the label "Father of the string quartet" is valid. I also think Beethoven's quartets are better overall, although he of course learned so much from Haydn so that is not to denigrate the predecessor.

Takacs impress me more and more. Have found some Haydn string quartets a little dull in other performances, but these are fabulous.

All 6 are great but the last one is "off the wall ". not even Beethoven would have tried anything this weird yet wonderful.
