Actually, it was believed to be Mozart, but now we know it was not. It was simply a nobleman in his childhood, if I remember correctly.

The people’s song ‘Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser’ came *first.* The string quartet Opus 76 No 3 came *second* as it used the already famous melody. Haydn’s piano arrangement came *third.* Everything else came *fourth, fifth, sixth,* et cetera, and much later for example came the English hymn ‘Glorious things of thee are spoken’, and it’s use as the German National Anthem.

Beide Kommentare waren durchaus unnötig. 1. ist Deutschland kein Mist (bin übrigens Österreicher), 2. ist es natürlich schade, dass unsere Hymne jetzt die Deutsche Nationalhymne ist. Was ich nicht verstehe: Warum soll Deutschland nicht die Bundesrepublik Deutschland sein und was hat das mit der Hymne zu tun. (Du weißt hoffentlich, dass ihr jetzt die 3. Strofe der Haydnhymne in der Textfassung der Nazionalsozialistischen Hymne singt)

Nowaday's anthem is based on the melody of this one, the text is different though.

yes it is! and it has nothing to do with roman empires. it was written for kaiser franz the emperor of austria before World War 1. It was taken by Adolf Hitler when Austria joined the German Empire and is since then it is the German one. Me as an Austrian get crazy about this cause our hymne is surely not as beautiful as the "German" one.

wirklich? und was "war" sie von 1804 bis 1918? sie war die österreichische kaiserhmyne, und nicht aller "deutsch reden länder". also bitte, wenn du schon argumentierst, dann informiere dich doch ein klein wenig über geschichte.

Nein, this is antuhem of Francis II of the Holy roman Empire. The anthem of Germany is Deutscheland Uber Alles.

...und weil kaiser franz der II/I dann zum kaiser von österreich wurde, und sie 114 jahre lange die österreichische kaiserhymne war, ist es naheliegender, dass sie die österreichische hymne wäre. ausserdem war österreich ein teil des HRR und hätte damit, deiner argumenation entsprechend, ebenfalls anspruch auf das stück... deine nationalistischen bemühungen sind peinlich.
