Auston doesn't sign 8 year deals because he wants to go back to unrestricted free agency after 3-4 years and boost up his salary. He always wants to be taking the absolute maximum amount of salary cap percentage that is possible. This isn't a player who prioritizes winning. If he took a 8 year deal and allowed his percentage of the salary cap to go down as years go by, then that would allow more room to surround him with better players and increase his chances of winning. He doesn't seem to care about winning.
@johnsummerhill8323

A player's salary cap hit does not change from one year to the next. It remains the same throughout the length of the contract. He can take more or less money from year to year but the cap hit never changes.
@js09js09
@js09js09 Жыл бұрын
@@johnsummerhill8323 I know a salary cap hit doesn't change. I was saying that percentage of a salary cap changes. For example, if you sign for a cap hit of $8 million and the salary cap is $80 million, then you make 10%. As the cap goes higher, your $8 million takes up less percentage. The point I was trying to make is that Auston Matthews seems like he wants to sign short-term deals so that his percentage of salary cap number doesn't go down over time. He constantly wants to make the highest possible percentage of the team's salary cap, and this behaviour isn't what he would be doing if he prioritized winning. He is more concerned with making every last cent possible.

Hayes is completely right here, as per usual. Johnson is missing the point. Other players are committed to their teams and willing to take a discount to try and win. It’s only the leafs players who squeeze every penny; especially Marner. The fact Marner held the team ransom as a hometown kid tarnished his legacy forever. Can’t wait for them to trade that guy.

The Leafs encouraged JT to not sign again and walk away from New York - so is it not really just fair and evens things up - if Matthews honours his existing Leaf contract & then just walks away to join his buddy Dubas in Pittsburgh. As they have the same agent ties then they both get rich and enhance the Penguins in the next half of Matthews career? Auston gets his real chance at a cup by leaving Toronto like other former Leafs did. Stay and there are no cups in Toronto likely for him. Can’t blame him for leaving.

Every team Hayes mentions is in the USA, playing for a Canadian team shows commitment, TO is on the cusp of a cup and so is Edmonton, right now players look at them as the only legit landing spots. What is wrong with a 4 year contract if management is confident of team in the cup final as Shanahan and Trieliving have stated.

You're either about your team, or about maxing out the money. If you want another kick at the armoured truck, then sign a 3 or 4 year extension, but at no more than 13M aav then at age 29 or 30, when the cap has gone up more significantly, you can sign a longer term deal for a much higher aav. If you are looking for 15M aav (or more) on an extension right now, then that tells me you're not serious about winning a Cup, because other elite players, like Pastrnak, MacKinnon & even Morgan Rielly have taken a bit less than max $ to help out their teams. MacKinnon could have easily held up Colorado for 14M aav, especially after being on a long term massive bargain deal at 6.3M aav for 8 years, but didn't.

The Leaf's will never win the Cup with Matthews onboard. paying Matthews what he clearly deserves inhibits the Leaf's from putting players around Matthews to help him win. Trading Marner or Willy away, will not get the Leaf's what they need to advance deep into the playoffs. They need a tougher Captain, like Ryan O'Reilly. They need to keep Luke Schenn. They need another second line centre and another top four defenceman. They need a another goalie. Trading Matthews will get them those things. Look at Matthews second contract. The first two years paid Matthews over $15 million up front each year. The Leaf's can afford to pay Matthews $14 million, if it's a 7 or 8 year deal; but Matthews will want a 3,4 or 5 year deal @ $14 million, but with $17.5 up front for the first two years. Trade him now when his leverage is at it's lowest and his value to someone else is at it's highest. make the good business deal now and help the team.

Matthews is injury-prone; he'll likely miss ten or more games next season; will his wrist hold up? He's had his career year, but he's not worth 13 or 14 million a year; he should take a pay cut to help the team; 9 million sounds about right. The Leafs would be better off trading him and getting a top defenseman and a top goalie. Nylander should be moved, too. Otherwise, we'll have more of the same next season, with a successful year when the going isn't tough, but in the playoffs, they'll show once again that they have NO GRIT. Matthews is a big dude, but he plays like a wimp; look at the way Stamkos threw him around in the playoffs. No grit, injury-prone, and not worth the money.

Let Matthews sign a 3 to 5-year deal, it gives the team and the player flexibility. I would be very hesitant to want to pay Matthews huge money for 8 years at 30 years old. If he has down years he could end up getting burned. He may get the monster 8 year deal from somewhere but without winning cups it wont be in Toronto.
