all crew do have basic STCW training which is basically intro paramedic training and enforced by maritime law also everyone was in shock of the injury and they all did the right thing. How the chef patched up his head was perfect. When someone gets seriously injured we're trained to inform our captains or mates and they have the choice to get the injured off the boat or not. What more did you expect from this?
@stefanvegsund9584 Жыл бұрын
@@nickdj1331 when its a head injury you are not suppose to do anything but put pressure on and wait for help. He called the doctor and you can hear the doc say in the Phone that captain did exactly what he should do and nothing more.

The fact the don't even put gloves on is super concerning and an indication that they have zero training ( or don't remember any of it). Gather yourself and go through the steps.

A massive red flag besides the fucking fact that HES HOLDING A PIECE OF HIS HAIR AND SCALP IN HIS FUCKING HAND, is that he doesn’t feel the pain, to me as a nurse, that tells me he’s in shock (at that point, it should be obvious to anyone when someone is in shock when they don’t feel the pain of being scalped). It’s extremely worrying that no one on that ship knows basic first aid. They should’ve immediately called for a doctor, while someone made him sit and watched him closely. Then they need to start to pack the wound as head injuries bleed profusely so urgency is key. They probably didn’t show it but pain relief should be started too, whatever they can give him at that point in time (making sure to keep an eye on the dosage, the time it was taken ect). Obviously there’s not a lot they can realistically do on a sail boat, but even the most basic of knowledge here would be great to see. Surely they have to be trained in first aid that isn’t a cut or scrape.
@nacra35652 жыл бұрын
It is pretty sad and worrying that only one person really new the very basics of first aid and knew to at least put pressure on it (it would also make sense that he also didn’t exactly know what to do as someone’s scalp being cut off isn’t exactly a sort of basic/normal situation) Also it’s pretty dumb he even cut his head open in the first place as he should have been aware of this kind of thing because you know….they’re on a boat with low ceilings.

Why no one on knows basic first aid is horrifying! That no one made a call over the radio immediately to advise the captain and everyone on staff of the medical emergency is also horrifying. Why the heck don’t they have a first aid person like every other workplace??? If he was allowed to work again that is also horrible and if it was in Australia illegal.

Cuts and lacerations to the head always seem worse then they are because that area just bleeds a lot more. Many blood vessels closer to the surface of the skin. Actually cutting off skin with hair would freak many out. Clean it, apply antibacterial, gauze, pressure wrap, and back to work. If it continued to bleed for a prolonged period of time or blood is soaking through changes of dressings, seek medical help. From what it looks like and the relatively thin layer of skin that came off not much else to do other than to prevent an infection while a scab forms.

Si , what is the best advice for people with no first aid skills? Correct me if you can answer extra helping .. Cover the entire area with sterile dressing and apply light pressure unless bleeding occurs to be increased or soaking to fast - aply firmer pressure but do not lift up the other dressing..aply the extra absorption layers over the same site...

kinda confused here by everyone saying how the crew doesn't even know basic first aid...from what I watched above they did first aid, when it first happened the one woman told him to sit down and not move while she ran and got help....then she got an ice pack while the Capt. put some gauze on Chef's head and said to apply pressure to stop the bleeding...the Captain also called the Dr. and told her about the injury to which she said they had done the right thing....so what else exactly should they have done?? Pain killer they could've given him and we just didn't see that, they had him sitting, someone was with him, pressure was applied to the wound, I'm gonna guess it was also possibly cleaned BEFORE he did the wrap job of it all around his head...I'm honestly not sure what else there was for them to do or why anyone would accuse them of not knowing first aid :s

As somebody without a job like this, who happened to take one lame little one week first aid course, I cannot believe that these people are paid to be on a yacht with paying guests but when there is an injury they do not ALL know exactly what to do. That first woman just rattled around and thought she should get him some water. My god, apply pressure to a bleeding wound for gods sake, assess it, assess him for head injury, have someone apply ice, not the patient, let him lean back on the seat, supported in case he passes out, not seated over that sharp corner table. Just why does she not do that immediately, I cannot imagine. Because in a litigious country, you can sue the first responders who give you crappy incompetent non-first aid like this.
