Was almost ready to buy a whole new unit because Leslie's could not find problem. It was a small obstruction in the gearbox that caused it to spin in circle. THANKS for saving me $400!!!

Thanks do very much for the directions! I took it apart, found the leaf obstruction, blew the gears and heard it whistle, and reassembled it. Works perfectly now! Saved me a bunch$$!

Perfect tutorial, a small piece of the foam float was stuck in gearbox assembly, once I cleaned it out it worked just like new again, thanks!

That cone gear may not be worn but I got a defective one that had a melted spot on one side that was missing 3 teeth on it where it was melted. The darn thing never worked right from the day it was new. I ordered a new cone gear and installed it, and am hoping that fixed the problem with it stopping all the time. But thanks for the very descriptive video.

Thanks for the excellent write up! I had replaced every gear including the cone gear in mine but it would still lock up after running for a bit. I have the older model where the top cover holds the cone gear in place and there seemed to be way too much play in the cone allowing the gear to get out of alignment and jam. As a last resort, I used my Dremel to grind down about 1/8" off each of the 4 studs that hold the cover in place, to reduce wobble in the cone gear. So far, so good.

Very helpful, thank you! Tore down our Aqua Critter, cleaned out a little bit of debris, checked all the gears. The top gear where the hose attaches spins freely when apart, but once the fly wheel gear is attached, it’s tough to move and grinds a little. All gears are clean & in good condition, all spin fine apart, only an issue when all together. Put it back together and tested it, still didn’t move much. Did the suction test and found we were right at the minimum. Cleaned out leaves from basket, didn’t help. Tried removing the directional squirter from the output port (where the water re-enters the pool) and that got our suction level back between the min & max lines.

Thank you so much for making this video. The blow test into the gearbox helped me solve my problem. when I did it there was no whistling noise. When I took it apart I found a small amount of debris that was keeping things from moving. My symptom was that the cleaner would just make left turns in about a 6 foot radius.

Wow! After examining my pool vac ( lees than 2 yrs old) and thinking it might be worn drive gears preventing the turning of the unit I stumbled across this video! I took apart my gear box and sure enough, I found some fine hairs tangled in the gears after taking them out one by one. After putting the gear box back together it passed the blow test! I have had three Navigators over the 20 year life of my pool and think they are awesome. Minor fix! Thanks for the great video.

Wish you were my neighbor. You seem like a cool Dude. I am a DIYer and I am self-taught on how to fix Hayward pool vacs. I have a love/hate relationship with mine. When it works, pool looks great. And then there are the 101 ways it can fail and needs repaired... Would be fun to chat with you over a beer and talk shop.

One area u did not discuss is pod being loose from A-frame due to pod hole wearing bigger. I've shimmed mine with a plastic card and keeps things tight again and works great.

Hi, just found you, subbed. I have an old Navigator (say 25 yr old) and the top cone gear (that attaches to the hose) is red and one piece. It has wear. Can I upgrade it to the clear with red bushing as you have? ALSO IMPORTANT. I replaced gearbox 2 yrs ago. Are the gears (not counting bottom & top) MARKED as to order of installation? Or are the IDENTICAL? THANKS! Froggy Mine does NOT turn when I do the hanging turn test you show in another video. Gets stuck on the pool steps corner.

Thanks for the sub! I have $100.00 rule on these things after that it becomes a money pit. 25 years old is really really old ... In my opinion and I say mine Get a new one with hose kit in all ( attatched link below in what I would buy)... on the gear box I take everthing out and put it back the way it came out then do the blow test om the weird square hole the red part should turn... if it does not turn you check suction and hoses (damaged) first with your guage and go from there... great video! The issue I have is that the gearbox continues to pick up debris and stop working after just a day or two. I replaced it a few months ago so it is fairly new. I will notice that it doesn't whistle, take it apart and remove the leaves or debris. It will work for a day or so and then stop again. Any idea why debris would be able to get in the gearbox so easily?

Thx. Im being charged for a new pump at the amount of $425 because my dog bit the hose to the navigator and its now not working. I was told that the tiny holes in the hose caused the pump to run dry and burned the motor. Pls help. Is this possible?. I took the navigator apart...one the barrings on the wheels were stuck. I fixed one the other is still slightly jammed. Just wondering if a bad navigator could cause pool pump to burn up

Ok buddy . I have gone through my Hayward twice now. First time there a couple of little things in there cleared it out. Installed it back in the pool. It worked for about 5 seconds, and then just stayed still again. When I lift it (still submerged) the feet are going there is suction. I am baffled. I did the blow test, it whistled and turned. Everything seems to operate fine out of the water, and looks like it will work. but once it is in the pool it may move an inch in 5 minutes, and turn a little to the left. I haven't seen it run to the right. I can't figure out the issue. because it always turns to the right the hose ends up coiled up too.

Oh also check for cracked leaking hoses common problem of loosing pressure / suction which is the prime mover for these machines

After rebuild, I can rotate my top cone gear either way just fine UNTIL I submerge it. Then I cannot rotate it at all by hand. Any ideas? Thanks!

tear apart do it again ... this is called the practice phase ... once you get it you will be able to do it blind folded... you must get past this to save money that is why pool guys make so much money people give up ... you can do it😇

If it is doing all its functions but weaker I would check all the hoses for cracks or damage (listen for leaks ) Also do a pressure test at the last hose that connects to the vacuum. use the gauge that came with the vacuum Flow Gauge, Page 7 how to hook up gauge hayward-pool-assets.com/assets/documents/pools/pdf/literature/pv-ownersmanual.pdf Gauge if you do not have Hayward Navigator/Pool Vac Plus Cleaners www.amazon.com/Hayward-V574P-Replacement-Select-Cleaners/dp/B005P4SZNA/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=flow+gauge%2C+hayward+navigator%2Fpool+vac+plus+cleaner&qid=1624018397&sr=8-3 if all good then you need to do a tear down looking for a blockage or bad parts. I have a Tiger Shark QC that runs the same pattern of cleaning. No matter how many times I pull it to another area, it finds itself going back to running the same pattern. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem could be?

Check hoses for damage or cracks use pressure gauge to see if pressure is good (Hayward V574P In-Line Flow Gauge) If good you might want to check again for debree inside ... long hair , blade of grass ... ETC... can stop these things in their tracks .If not take it to leslies to be inspected ( call first to see if they still do free inspections) use the $100.00 dollar rule on repairs for these things (can become a money pit on parts cheeper just to replace them ... i learned the hard way fixing these things take my word for it ) If you buy a new one make sure comes with a hose like this :::::: www.amazon.com/Hayward-W32025ADC-PoolVac-Automatic-Cleaner/dp/B003LTVVD2/ref=sr_1_10?crid=10FOK74IP9665&keywords=hayward%2Bnavigator&qid=1652141253&sprefix=hayward%2Bnavigator%2Caps%2C112&sr=8-10&th=1&tag=coa_us-20 Works for me God bless😇
