Most of us own a Baofeng. It is cheap and does the job. What would you say if we could transplant its “heart” and combine it with a Raspberry Pi or an ESP32? We would get a dirt cheap and compact device for all sorts of analog and digital modes.

Last April (2022) we used this SA818 on a Raspberry Pi Hat in a weatherballoon we launched in collaboration with a local school. The HAT also had a GPS and soundcard so it could send back sensor data, APRS and sstv during flight. The HAT was specificly created for this purpose and software control was a combination of Direwolf and python scripting.

This is absolutely amazing. I remember back in the 80's doing RF electronics was very complicated with lots of math and circuit design expertise needed. Today things changed drastically. Building complex electronics projects feels like playing with "LEGO". Everything connects to everything by SPI or I2C and you get the job done quickly. I learned a lot from your great video !

It all comes down to the projects dedicated to making open source hardware and software for the community, Arduino really put it in motion and obviously much has advanced since then, but a lot of the standards for the components came from that project and appear to be solid.

A note about the low pass filters. The Baofeng-style radios use the antenna for the low pass filter. Some regulations require harmonics measured at the transmitter while others use the transmitted signal. The latter are generally associated with inexpensive radios where the antennas cannot be removed. The higher the Q of the antenna the better - for more than one reason! 73, Chris K9EQ
@HB9BLA
@HB9BLA Жыл бұрын
Maybe, I never made such measurements. But most antennas I tested had resonances at the harmonics, too. And the Baofengs have connectors. So the regulator here will measure there.

Very nice. A friend of mine has an open source project that uses a CM108. The small PCB has some support circuitry to break out the audio in/out and CM108 GPIO (exposed on the SMD version of the CM108) for interfacing a radio. I love that Direwolf can control the CM108 GPIO for PTT out of the box. I've been using his project now for 3 years and it works great for Direwolf + Pat on a Pi 3. We've also experimented with the NinoTNC for 9600 VHF packet via Direwolf. I've seen a few others build hats exactly as you describe. I'll have to find that project and send it to you.

What you want is an I2S stereo CODEC talking to the RPI or ESP32. Split the stereo to L = LocalAudio, R = RadioAudio - with the individual channels optimized. If you want more radio modules, they make 4-channel I2S codec that only needs the single I2S data-lane (2x16-bit split audio channels per 32-bit I2S channel period). That would still work with a minimal ESP32, and would give you another 2x radio slots for 3x total radios and a local mic/speaker.

You can encrypt stuff on public bands like LoRa (FRS?) if you aren’t operating as a HAM, the restriction is part of the licensing... so in North America as a HAM you can use the 433 MHz LoRa band (or 915), but it has to be unencrypted, whereas the public may only use 915 MHz, but it can be encrypted.

Can you just use the SA868 instead of the SA818, for example on the same module board? It looks like the programming manual is the same.

Where can I find? ... This looks like a great setup. I am a pilot who is NEW to SDR and am asking for help to find out the best way to connect the voice input received by the device into voice recognition software on the PI using the Python PiAudio library. I want to be able to call the receiver at my grass strip airport to command the PI to read the wind direction and speed from a weather station and broadcast the information back to me. (Airband in North America, the spectrum from 118.000 to 136.975 MHz is used with 25 kHz spacing and AM). Instead of voice comands, I could - lets say - click my aircraft radio transmit button 5 times. The software on the Pi would have to know how to count the transmit clicks. I have no idea how to do that. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

When I returned to the field in Venice, I had to key the transmitter a few times to swithc on the runway lights... The question is if you need to use your official gear or you can us a different frequency, If you can use a different one, I suggest to look at LoRa (I have some videos about it on my main channel). It offers a data connection on 915MHz ISM (license free) band.

📻 I want to build a all in one scanner like the HRD-747 but running off a arduino or esp32. Using the sa818 modules I thought it could be a good idea. The goal is fully open sorce radio communications. There are some scanners on the market but I want one that looks and feels like a handheld radio. Or is at least pocket size like the HRD-747. All ideas are welcome. Comment here if you're interested.

I know I am asking some very old questions that I have not found any answers to yet: 1. is it possible to program the chip to give you raw or unfiltered RX (for 9600 baud packet) nor not? same interest in transmitting higher speed data than 3KHz/1200baud 2. Do these SDR use any kind of a (VHF/UHF)Local Oscillator and IF frequency (internal to the chip) for RX and any idea what it is or how to find it? I was just going to put an antenna and spectrum analyzer near the chip to try and find it. THANKS!

This chip is an FM transceiver. It is used for low speed packet because it only has the standard voice bandwidth. And I think you find the LO frequency on the xtal pins of the RDA1846 chip inside the module. I assume it is close to the receiving frequency because the DSP wants NF...
@n8lbv
@n8lbv Жыл бұрын
@@HB9BLA Thanks for the reply, by LO I mean the RX injection LO not the crystal clock frequency. Assuming there is a mixdown from 460MHz or 150 Mhz before brought down and sent to the SDR. Not sure what you meant by it wanting "NR". Please explain. I don't expect SDR happens directly at 460 or 150 MHz. :) I could be wrong, but not going to go and admit that. Also the RDA1846 is "hardcoded" for low bandwidth voice. It *could* physically do 9600baud or higher bandwidth IF they wanted it to and could have added this to the command set. But they did not. Just like it can do 25KHz FM or 12.5kHz FM RX+TX modes. It could have been given the ability to do wider modes. Limited in software. FM RX mode on (65-108MHz) is programmed or "hardcoded" to make the chip do a much wider RX mode. Could have been done for UHF/VHF to make it higher speed data capable. Fun stuff anyhow. Cool video. Thanks!

#1. All in one, bluetooth APRS module. Think of a Mobilinc TNC but with a transmitter built into it already. That way, you just connect your phone or bluetooth tablet (or laptop) to ONE device and go. #2 Self contained, stand alone APRS digipeater/igate. There are a few on the market but they have TERRIBLE software and are very expensive ($200usd and up). Something that is low powered that could be solar powered would take the place of LORA Mesh units that everyone is talking about, but have better range than a few hundred mw on 900mhz. Also, Denis from Digirig was working on a Pi Audio hat. There are many on the market, but have seem to fallen away or are very expensive.
