Bionic Buzz® interviewed actress Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen over zoom about being in the new HBO series The Sympathizer. Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren't over. The series debuts on Sunday, April 14th on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. There are seven episodes total, which will debut weekly beginning April 14th through the finale on May 26th. Ky Duyen stars alongside Robert Downey Jr., Hoa Xuande, and Sandra Oh, in the role of "Madame," wife of "The General" played by Toan Le.

About Ky Duyen - Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen (aka ‘Ky Duyen’) is the youngest daughter of former Air Marshal, Prime Minister and Vice-President of South Vietnam Nguyen Cao Ky, and his wife, Madame Dang Tuyet Mai. Having escaped from Vietnam at the age of 14 to come to America and a 30-year Navy vet having deployed to the Middle East- Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti, this episode does strike a chord with me. There is no winning in war, it is just a degree of losing.

For those who doesn’t know, she is indeed one of the true people of the 1975 descendants. Her father was the last prime minister of South Vietnam back then, so that made her mother some sort of First Lady - wife of the President . Her character in the show is based of her late mother. Check it out. Her character’s husband later goes to the states and opened a liquid store that’s exactly what her late father did in real life.

My parents even remember Ky Duyen's tenure as a co-MC of "Hollywood Night" with Nam Lộc in 1993! The rest is History! Ky Duyen went to Paris By Night and Nam Lộc, to Asia! So much memories!

@@anhkhoido1258 Nam Lộc I remember too but Nguyễn Ngọc Ngạn and Ky Duyen were a constant in my house at other houses during dinners, after dinners, parties, not to mention when a new Paris by night or Asia came out and we would make a trip to the Vietnamese video store to get the latest release and newspapers, magazines 😁. I remember we switched stores a couple times cause the video store was late on the release 🙄

When I read the source material, the book, I thought that her character and the general were so based on Ky Duyen's parents! Her father was indeed a general of the South Vietnamese Air Force and operated a liquor store in the United States.

As Vietnamese myself, this is my first time hearing her having conversation in English. A little unimpressed. Her singing and acting was not good in Paris by Night. I don’t see much talents on her. Even MC, she need her partner, Hosting a show by herself is not great. She got fame because of her father old political position.

Agreed. It's sad to read some of the petty comments (petty = nhỏ mọn). Some people fail to recognize the magnitude of this production. They obviously put a lot of thoughts into it by casting Ms Kieu Chinh va Ky Duyen, 2 very prominent Vietnamese-American figures (and deserving in their own rights). The director, Park chan-wook is GOD! (yeah just some random dude who won an Oscars! I kid) and last but not least, the book won the 2006 Pulitzer; the author, Viet Thanh Nguyen is a 1st gen Vietnamese refugee who went on and earned a PhD in English at UC Berkeley.

It's interesting that she didn't know that before auditing. Kinda weird and no, I am not being petty or jealous whatsoever as I do not have HBO to watch the series anyway. I might buy the book to read though.

@@LinhPham-xe8by Her involvement (playing her mother in real life) may have been a deliberate decision and it makes the show even more interesting than casting a random actress. As you know "cameo" appearance is a thing in movie making. It's the director/acting coaches job to help the actors. As a fan of Park chan-wook I doubt that he'd settle for less.
