If you’re a billionaire, you’re not grounded and down to earth because you’re sitting on more money than you could spend in multiple lifetimes while countless people go hungry. In the book, Michael (who is a much more sympathetic character than in the movie) actually says exactly this about the Khoos’ wedding. Astrid herself apparently comes to realise this in the third book and travels to a poorer part of Asia to help people.

TOTALLY warps him and he begins employing corporeal punishment with Cassian. Then he spends the third book blackmailing her into a large divorce settlement. I like Astrid a lot, my main gripe with the movie was how much of her story was cut (the book and movie had two totally different purposes/goals, so it made sense). It's not so much that she realizes that money is bad (like, if you're looking for a critique of capitalism, these books are not for you), it's that she stops trying to please everyone all the time. She builds a life for herself (and Cassian) outside of Singapore on a remote island with a poorer population. In China Rich Girlfriend there's a character who's actually a great example of how Astrid COULD HAVE turned out but didn't.

The reason anyone was interested at all in this story was because of this sudden revelation about his family. All of a sudden being thrown into this world of luxury and scandals and backstabbing, that's the whole appeal. The writer could have found a better reason he was hiding all of this and a better reason as to why he thought she wouldn't be a target, but let's be honest, this wasn't the best written story to begin with. He is the way he is because he is a fantasy everyone wishes in their lives, the modern version of the prince charming trope. You could say he was just trying to find some sort of semblance for happiness with someone actually genuine, but then again why was he so naive about his family when he knew people could be superficial?

In the book only few really know about young's family wealth. Plus it explained very well in the book.

I have to agree. Nick’s NOT a shitty boyfriend, but this was a pretty shitty white lie to tell Rachel. It’s really weird of him to understand that his family position is NOT normal that he hides it ‘til the last minute (which Rachel rightfully calls him out for), yet somehow NOT understand that proposing to her is such a huge life-turn that OTHER PEOPLE have to explain it for him (the bachelor party and his god damn best friend). Like, is he thinking about how this will affect her at all? Or does he somehow not understand his own lifestyle? She was so freaking clueless that she mistook a cook for the grandmother and Nick went “yeah, let’s marry her into the fam. She definitely doesn’t need more time to adjust and I certainly don’t need to prepare her further”. And this behaviour clearly affects Rachel because she can see that Nick is willing to bend truths to put them in a good light so she doesn’t tell him about his mother’s bullying. Nick’s communication skills are lacking.

Ooor Astrid traveled to New York for any number of reasons and Rachel actually met her so even if she doesn't know Nick's family is wealthy, she'd still be impressed by Astrid, because, well, look at her.

In the first book it's mentioned a few times, that Astrid has been to New York once and met with Rachel and Nick. Rachel was later, when they met again in Singapur, amazed by Astrids appearance and to see her in her "natural habitat". Also one reason Nick didn't tell Rachel anything about his family is because he was taught by his family not to do so (espicially his grandmother). So most of the new-rich families don't even know about the wealth and existence of the Young family. In the books Peik Lins family for example didn't knew anything about them ^^
