Absolutely a great figure. The cartoon never did his desert camouflage justice. It wrongly gave his uniform green patches instead of brown patches.

Dusty was definitely a cool figure, always preferred figures that were more on the realistic side, and he was part of mine and my brothers' collection, but he was one of those "situational" joes, like Snow Job or Torpedo, and was never a part of the main joe team. I always assumed Hasbro gave him a French weapon as an allusion to the French Foreign Legion, which was well known to have operated in the desert of northern Africa. Coincidentally the 1991 version of Dusty also came with a French weapon; the MAT 49 submachine-gun,

Plus with the cloth drape on his helmet reminds me of the desert hats worn by the French Foreign Legion from historical photographs. I also like how Dusty was one of the first characters to were camo face paint in the vintage line.

I got this figure in my Easter basket which was unusual because I usually just got chocolate & jelly beans! One of my favorites for sure. That bit of cloth & the bipod gave him that extra bit of realism. Desert combat wasn't all that odd an idea, what with Libya and Gaddafi going on...

Very cool review of G.I. Joe Dusty.
@JayFamous13
@JayFamous13 8 жыл бұрын
I liked the review, as always. I did have a different interpretation of that passage in Dusty's file card, though. I read it as, "We have a fast-response mobile action team that has to be versatile in all combat scenarios and that means that we can't dedicate resources to entire specialty branches. So if we can only have one specialist in each field to help lead the others, then so be it." I took it as LAMENTING the fact that they could only have one or two specialized operatives, rather than an entire branch or department. And I always like that. It emphasized the fact that G.I. Joe was not just the entire U.S. military, but rather a small strike force that had to adapt to different environments with a minimum of personnel.
@racerxgundam
@racerxgundam 7 жыл бұрын
my interpretation is exactly the same. i always found it so odd that it were the joes that had limited personnel in the field...one desert trooper, one snow trooper, one heavy machine gunner, etc etc etc...and cobra had numerous faceless soldiers to fit those specialties. i dun know if its ever stated anywhere in g.i. joe but as a kid...i always played with them under the assumption that they were under funded and maybe not an "official" unit for whatever reasons.

I was never lucky enough to get Dusty in 1985. As an adult, he was one of the ones I just had to own. To examine, behold and find closure with. Haha. I lucked out and got a C9 Mint one off the 'bay for a good price, no bipod. I swear, sometimes I just find myself staring at the figure in my hands, getting flooded with dopamine from how greatly articulated that desert garb was, and from how funny his somewhat oversized head is. He's got a repro bipod now with a tan figure stand and looks amazing! Lastly, HCC, your final point on him is what I like most. His uniform was 4-6 years ahead of its time!!

I remember buying Dusty just for the gun. He didn't fit in because he was not green. He usually stayed behind cleaning up the base. Then I bought the Tiger Force Dusty and put his head on an extra Footloose figure and from then on he went on missions.

HCC, YES!!! Thank you for finally covering Dusty! He is such a cool character, definitely before his time. I love him as a kid, and living in Arizona, my friends and I often played in the dirt. Dusty was the only one who we didn't have to pretend to blend in. Great review!!

Whoa man, I've just reahed the end of the review and the foreshadow thought really struck me hard. I mean thinking about the "so be it" and the wars that were to follow around the world gave me goosebumps and foggy eyes. That word is so overused, but I have to say that some of your philosophical review endings are really deep. Great job!

Dusty also had a great VA in the show. He sounded a little cocky, but well founded. Guy was a total soldier. I remember the Mainframe/Rashid comic, it was cool that Dusty got some hero moments but never ragged on Mainframe despite Rashid hero worshipping the "real soldier"....until he learned Mainframe was a vet who re enlisted after his electronics/computer training.

That style of rifle is a bullpup. It moves the barrel back in the stock, gives you the ability to have a full carbine length barrel while reducing the overall length of the rifle. The steyre AUG and iwi tavor are other popular examples

Looking back at the vintage G.I. Joe line, it always impressed me whenever Hasbro would give the action figures internationally produced firearms like the FAMAS Dusty came with or the FN FAL Ripcord was came with. A few of the 1992/1993 even came with the Steyer AUG.

@@adamverwolf9499 Crankcase or a similar looking character appears in a background shot during one of the episodes in the "Arise Serpentor Arise" miniseries. For what ever reason, the producers on the Sunbow cartoon decided not to use him. It is a little strange when every other specialized vehicle that G.I. Joe used had the driver character appear at including appearances from both Frostbite and Heavy Metal.

This is coming to you way too late since you made this 4 years ago. Dusty's patch represents no real unit existence. As you mentioned Dusty was a theoretical soldier, for a future we didnt know we will have then. The Patch represents what the designers thought a "desert unit" might use as a patch, when the official desert warfare school was created, it used a patch which is square and has a scorpion as a symbol. Like I said the patch was theoretical. One solutions I saw for the bipod was deciding in what position I wanted it and just super glue it in place.

I Joe also I got nothing to Cobra or Iron Grenadiers when they have Cyborgs , or small genetic modifications , drones but wihout lasers rifles who looks like from Star Wars ... Also i like when characters are not clean white or full black Bad ass ... And hell I got nothing to see more girls , or full female army buliders . ( I wish to see some bases complex play grounds to see too , hospitals are welcomes , refuge camps ... Well as potential dad I wish teach my kid somthing about world ... I think maybe Hasbro should make somethng like Warhammer 40 000 or link with video games too ... ( Old " Jagged Alliance II & Some RTS genre comes in my head like Earth 2140 or Supreme Comander , C. Great figure...but not a great character. He doesn't have many characteristics of a top elite soldier--no special schools, no special characteristics, doesn't even have expertise on his given gun. He's a grunt--but not even as well-trained as Grunt. Why is he on GI Joe?
