I never knew this set existed, so thanks, Hoodie, for diving into the obscure end of the pool and bringing it to mine and everyone else’s attention. While watching the review, I couldn’t help thinking that the dinosaur looked like the dinosaur in Carnosaur, the Roger Corman-produced “mockbuster” that was made to cash in on Jurassic Park’s popularity. So, in my head canon, I will always think that G.I. Joe wasn’t trying to compete with Jurassic Park with this set, they were tying in cash in on the cash-in of Carnosaur. 😂

There was an episode of the Sunbow cartoon (Primordial Plot S1 E 42) where Cobra did in fact, clone and released dinosaurs on an island. So there is some precedent for this subteam. Though it was many years too late and very clearly a response to Jurassic Park as you said. And also, while not in the comic book, the cover of Special Missions #25 has a pterodactyl museum model crashing into a Tiger Paw. Again, not Dino Hunters, but the closest the comic ever got.

In 1983, the novel CARNOSAUR, also dealing with cloned terrible lizards. About seven, eight years before Michael Cricton's novel came.out.

You did a wonderful job giving the set context in regard to so many other things - Jurassic Park, previous incarnations of G.I. Joe, what was going on behind the scenes. I always look forward to the "out there" reviews when they come along (the aliens, cyborgs, mutants, oddities, the other vintage Joe lines that aren't ARAH) and this did not disappoint.

I recently retrieved my Funskool collection from India, the Funskool desert fox came with the dino hunters turret as it doesn't have the shield! I only got to know this thanks to your review HCC788!!

If you ignore the dinosaur the vehicle and figures can be used alongside the rest of the toys. You could always use the dino if you were trying to create the bat cave.

I owned a Desert Fox as a kid. I remember getting angry at something and throwing the vehicle, which ended up breaking the wheels. I owned the Skidmark figure until around 2013 when a fire destroyed most of my childhood possessions. I also used to take the connected plastic from the accessory tree and cut them down to make bats and nightsticks for my Lego figures. The rounded design fit perfectly in the hands of the minifigs.

The vehicle is actually known as the “Dino-Fox”, because it was derived from a repurposed desert fox.

I actually did a commemorative coin set of the dino hunter set, with alot of pieces, including live the adventure certificate, patch, photo collage, even a written essay of the interview i held with Kirk bozigian about the set that he conceived of from the start.

To think, there was a remake/ crossover planned and partially released in 2009/2011 with Jurassic Park. Check out Jurassic Park Dino Showdown for the few released figs.

I got this from Toys R Us in back in 93 I thought it was a good vehicle and love the Figures were really good low light ambush in the cheap dinosaurs that came with it

Man I would love to see what this could be with modern toys. Seeing cobra troopers riding raptors with guns would be cool. The modern Jurassic works stuff is cool and seeing one fight gi joe would be cool.

This would've made a great Adventure People ride (but without the missles probably). And good call on the 70s Joe Action Team vibe (also without the missles, most likely); that was my favorite era of Joes as a kid and the Idol adventure being the best of the best thanks to a Power Record (Peter Pan Company Record?) If they just do finally finish producing the team in 3 3/4ths this would be a great match. Even the dinos since what we got with the Joes back then was equally less than impressive (lookin' at you, pigmey gorilla) but still loved by us all the same. PS. Awesome collaberation; Pegwarmers is great channel.

I wonder, when this vehicle was being designed, if it was originally meant to either be, or get recolored into a Cobra vehicle. Because when you look at the front of the vehicle, the shape of the "hood", combined with the "headlights" and the grill lines, it looks like a skull!

I never saw the “Dino Hunters” play set as an attempt by Hasbro to compete with Jurassic Park. It was more like an attempt to capitalize on it. The set was a one shot store exclusive with an absolutely terrible dinosaur pack in. I think the purpose was to seed the idea in the heads of children that their GI Joe collection was completely playable with the very popular dinosaurs and play sets available from Kenner’s JP line.

I write about that because i interviewed kirk. He said hasbro should be able to compete by having their own version of everything, including dinosaurs, aliens (star brigade), fighting franchise (street fighter) etc, Even jf hasbro didnt dominate, they would have a piece of the action.

Which daughter was in the T-Rex suit? LOL Ugh Robocop 3 doesn't exist ha ha. Low-Light gets promoted and team leader, I guess and poor Ambush can't get any respect. To Pegwarmers, wow, that JP playset is big and the fence being able to wrap around to make a circle cage is cool. Anti-Dinosaur Concussion Device....love it. I really think if they had done the dinosaur top notch instead of THAT, it would have made the playset better. I would have wanted to get it. Yes that string is soooo expensive ha ha. On Ebay, I bought 5 feet of it for 4 or 5 bucks. Don't remember which but it has come in handy. Dr. Mindbender riding a dinosaur...because why not. They should have kept Ambush with his original accessories. The blue plastic thumb ha ha. I had version 3 Low-Light. I really liked that version.

I never knew about this one and I guess I did not miss much. GI Joe's downfall was it starting to copy everyone instead of leading the way. If they had just stuck to the semi-realistic military stuff for GI Joe. Some scifi stuff for Cobra and left all the aliens, mutants, and apparently dinosaurs out of it... I think they could have run the A Real American Hero line for much much longer. The dinosaur looks like a squeak toy or something and is just totally out of place. I like the reissues since they gave kids like me a chance to get a toy they did not get on the first run... but not in something like this set.

The dinosaur is the worst thing to ever come out of the GI Joe toy line, the clutched hands look like it’s begging for food (or to be put out if it’s misery) the only way to give this thing any worth, is to paint the Cobra logo on it, and let your imagination give this abomination a back story.
