The two straps are to represent LBE suspenders. The straps in zap and short fuse are to represent the pack straps for their ammo carrying backpacks. The strap across the chest was a sternum strap, it helps keep heavy packs from cutting into the shoulders. Clutch wore a flak vest, over that was a shoulder holster. Steeler has a shoulder holster also, just a different type one. The checkered pads on grand slam and flash were supposed to be for protection from lasers, heat etc.

Its weird grunt was my favorite as a kid. He was always the main character in my wars with cobra. But i had the grunt from the 90s with yellow pants and black flattop haircut like my grand dad.

A really good review of the color and parts differences in the figures. I never really noticed that my Grand Slam figure was the 1.5 version until I saw this video. Now I can search for the original 1982 version. Something new to collect. Nice!

I hear a lot of complaints from fans about the 1982 figures, and how they look too much alike, are basically the same parts, etc. but I feel I need to point out that the relaunch of GI Joe during this time, especially in a scale never offered before with GI Joe. Was a complete gamble for Hasbro. The original GI Joe line fizzled out with the Super Joe line barely six years prior. So Hasbro had to rightfully be cautious when it came to investing in this line. Shared figure sculpts is something that still goes on today, in most popular toy lines. Albeit the variation may not be as noticeable. At any rate this is a great video source for being able to help identify older figures.

Thank you, HCC- You DA MAN!! I have a lot of 1982, 83, 84, 85, and 86 figures! I’m getting Flash, Grunt, Breaker, and Grand Slam shortly. Then I will have all the elusive ones that I’ve been needing for a long time! Thank you for differentiating all the figures! It’s a HUGE help!!

Are both Hawks supposed to be the same guy, even though they are distinctly different?

Great job, HCC788👍 Very descriptive and organized. Thank you for all of the differentiations and explanations from 82-83 figures. I’m from Boston and if you grew up in my neighborhood we would have been best buddies😎😎 Yo Joe!!

they made a lot out of not much just by changing the color and shuffling parts

I am still a firm believer that this way of diversifying characters with reused parts was a fantastic way of starting off a toyline as awesome as GI Joe. they could have gathered a larger fan base, or still could, by molding more characters in different skin tones. also, the fact they were "interchangeable" with the removal of a simple screw made them invaluable to my friends and I as children! add in a couple more modern body parts and accessories, and Hasbro could have a relaunch that would be pretty affordable to all kids, as opposed to the $8-12 Joes out there now. and bring back accessory packs darn it!lol

Was I the only one that used grunt as Michael Ironside's character from Scanners when they were a kid. My brother and I had 3 grunts, one with the glider, swivel arm and my original one that had both broken thumbs. ...That's' the one we used as Michael Ironside since he didn't need to hold anything to mess you up!!

I noticed the revets in the arms are facing deferent directions in the straight arm vs the swivel arm. Edit: wonder why they changed that

@@HCC788 It sucked that Marvel/Disney took over and ruined GI Joe in 2006 and after that all the figures are just made like Marvel figures, so that was the end of GI Joe :( but I still buy the vehicles just sucks they are not made for the vintage types of GI Joe, they should have stayed with the same action figure mold
