chapeau alla sessantatreenne Joan Sutherland, che dopo due atti con tutte le fatiche del ruolo, nel finale del terzo emette un sovracuto di una purezza estrema e lo tine per tutta la durata della coda orchestrale, fenomenale!!!

What a fantastic final high D-flat! And she held it for what felt like an eternity! Many of today's sopranos would have a hard time producing such resonance and power on that note.

Indeed. Originally it’s in Eflat and at Covent Garden the note rang out spectacularly. By the penultimate year of her career she transposed to avoid headaches she said.

Happily, I saw Dame Joan in her prime. I have to ask myself why she would’ve agreed to these bel canto roles at that point. She addressed it in a few interviews at the time: “I’d be just as happy to dispense with all the agility and sing roles like Adriana, but they still ask for things like Lucia!”
