St. Sebaldus Church (St. Sebald, Sebalduskirche) is a medieval church in Nuremberg, Germany. Along with Frauenkirche (Our Lady's Church) and St. Lorenz, it is one of the most important churches of the city, and also one of the oldest. It is located at the Albrecht-Dürer-Platz, in front of the old city hall. It takes its name from Sebaldus, an 8th-century hermit and missionary and patron saint of Nuremberg. It has been a Lutheran parish church since the Reformation.
The fact that St. Sebald was always nobler and more important than St. Lorenz can no longer be read from the cityscape since the construction of the railroad station. However, the direct proximity of the church's hall choir to the Old City Hall underscores its former importance as Nuremberg's "council church," where St. Sebald, the city's patron saint, is buried.
From a predecessor building, which was probably dedicated to St. Peter (12th century ?), an obviously two-nave crypt could be excavated. In place of this predecessor, the Sebalduskirche was built between 1225/1230 and 1273 as a double-choir pillar basilica. In many architectural motifs, it follows the example of Bamberg Cathedral (double choir, double tower facade with polygonal apse on the west choir consecrated in 1274, etc.), so that despite the Gothic interior elevation, some Romanesque-like building elements were adopted.
