Absolutely perfect lesson. The Music Theory part was terrific and explaining the addition of the C# in the A chord as an harmonic minor gave me a total understanding of the composition. That made all the difference.

I love this song. I have been in the same situation and I totally feel it, the slipping back into unhappiness when the dream is shattered. I sing it, so it makes sense that I learn to play it on piano too.

I can play this separately but I CANNOT manage the left and right at the same time 🙁 any tips?!

One of my favorite practice techniques is "Slow Practice." It's a pretty simple concept: until you can play your hands together at a very slow speed, you won't be able to play them together any faster... so start slow and gradually increase the tempo after each successful pass. Pay attention how the left hand works with the right hand. Don´t play play the hands separated, as both hands work together is the secret.

do you have any tips on gaining hand independence for this song? the syncopation makes it super hard to play the right hand without following the rhythm of the stuttered octaves of the left

If necessary you can leave out the top note of the octave - or sometimes, reducing the octave (8th) down to a 5th can work well.

Best piano tutorial I’ve found so far BUT YOUR HAND POSTURE. Ugh, it’s bothersome! I can literally see you switch your fingers mid-play because you laid down the wrong one. It’s the only thing keeping me from learning right because it’s just so wrong. I’m so stuck staring at your hand jumping all over unnecessarily. It’s confusing when I’m trying to play correctly and you’re all over the place when you aren’t even traveling so far.

Everything is amazing except for how incoherent this all is actually. You play it differently each time 🤣 I don't know how to start anymore. Right at the beginning, the D octave, you play it as D DD DD D C then G but all the way at the end when you say let's play up to chorus you start D DD D D D C G- ..... ???

Sorry about that! Refer to 0:13 for the main riff. You're right, at the end Joe leaves out some of the low octaves -- when you play it yourself, feel free to modify with what sounds good to you. But learning from the beginning demonstration is a good place to start!! :)
