RetroArch CRT Shader (HDR Demo)

Күн бұрынHi all, I'm just experimenting with HDR, so expect there to be issues with this demo. KZfaq is sure to crush the detail due to it's compression. Video might appear dim on non-HDR displays:
1. View on a 4K display
2. Ensure Display has HDR enabled
3. Select 4K60 HDR on KZfaq's resolution settings

Looks pretty good. Just my opinion here - color temp is overly warm, colors appear slightly oversaturated and the whites lack the glow that I remember from CRTs. But any progress on HDR shaders is appreciated!!!!!!! Testing on an LG C2.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback. I'll take a look at the colour temp - now you mention it, it can totally see it too! I'll also take a look at the whites too. I really appreciate your time with this experiment 🍻

@@RetroCrisis Experimenting is the best way to create something new lol. I been good had to step away and take care of some personal things but I'm already back experimenting myself lol, just posted up a new sample pack in my thread trying out a new look to replace my current pack. Maybe you'll check it out sometime.

Looks flipping awesome. It's just like playing a SNES back in the day. Maaaybe it could be 15-20% sharper though.

Watching the 2160p stream on a proper 4K HDR display, there's alternating vertical clear and dark lines on all colors, it's especially noticeable on reds but not only. I suspect the scanlines aren't well aligned with the native resolution? Or maybe youtube didn't process correctly the video.

Sadly I think it’s the KZfaq compression. The raw video on my PC doesn’t seem to suffer the same issues. KZfaq isn’t quite ready for HDR CRT shaders 😋

Idk about others, but crt new pixie seems like the most underrated shader out there. This shader perfectly portrayed my crt tv based on how i remember it and i love it. Also you can add blargg ntsc filter on top of that and this shader run perfectly with monitor below 4K, unlike CRT Royale

I'm getting odd reddish / blueish color shifts every few seconds. Overall, I'm not sure it can really work without 4:4:4 encoding and rendering, which is not gonna happen on KZfaq unfortunately.

Sadly KZfaq can't handle the 4:4:4 which is very annoying. It's a real shame 😞

@@RetroCrisis yeah. I was watching on my TV which already struggles decoding 2160p at 60 fps at higher bitrates 😅 I guess a workaround could be to render in 1080p and scale it up to 4k, that'll give 1080p 4:4:4 and we'll be able to see the RGB phosphors simulation that way

@@RetroCrisis I have a solution/workaround that I think I shared with you months ago on Discord. Believe it or not, there are specific Mask Size settings which would be compatible with YCbCr 4:2:0. I know because I have a TV that can only do YCbCr 4:2:0 when at 4K 60p. Several of my older Mega Bezel Presets are set to use those settings and so would be immune to the issues you are encountering and I'm not sure if I already included any in my CRT-Royale Preset Pack but it would be pretty easy to adjust my CRT-Royale Preset pack to something that works well with that colour format as I did it a few months ago when setting up that same TV to work with my CRT-Royale pack. If I recall correctly, for CRT-Guest-Advanced, all you need to do is use Mask 6 and set it to Mask Size 2. For CRT-Royale, I'll have to refer to my saved presets or experiment and find the settings again but the setting to adjust is the triad size desired or something like that. Will get the information then edit this post. Once you get the 4:2:0 issues out of the way, everything else might just fall into place. I think that's definitely a target for my next set of updates.

Firstly, what an incredible job! I would like to know if there is a way to add your shaders to external emulators that are not within Retroarch, for example, add them directly to DuckStation

Thanks again for your great work ! I haven’t started to look at shader programming and am wondering why are shaders system specific rather than screen maker & model specific or signal type specific. Can you explain what makes a genesis shader different from a snes shader for instance ?

I think it's down to the fact that different consoles have different video characteristics. Some rely on dithering whilst others don't some have large/small color palletes. Some support RGB, some don't. There are so many permutations

I really want to see the difference between this and a Retrotink 4K combined with a MisterFPGA! Is it worth it to spend around 1400$ for those devices or can we achieve it with software emulation for free. I have a really high end OLED and I thought about investing in a RT4K together with the Mister. Now that I have seen this, I‘m not that sure anymore, so it would be great if someone with more knowledge can talk about this topic. Especially the person who build this would be amazing! I really want to hear their honest opinion on my question :)

Whilst the Tink and Mister are great devices, neither of their filters compare to RetroArch. It's not even close. Save your money.

@@RetroCrisis TV boxes tend to run Batocera or Emulelec. Usually stuck with glsl/glslp or just filters. There is a whole community of Batocera/Emuelec/Retro Handheld users who'd happily test this kind of thing for you for low-powered devices.

My filters combine custom scanlines and glsl shaders and are created and developed for low end device. In particolare for the T95 max plus or any other s905x3 device
