It’s not only about having the commercial tow rig. Tires/ brakes/ oil, etc all lasts 5x longer than a 1 ton dually. Better vision, better braking, and more power when needed. This is the only way to go if you wanna full time and move your rig at least occasionally. The Maintanance savings and safety outweigh the mpg loss in my eyes.

Nice rig. We have one, too, and we get 9 mpg. MPG depends upon the engine HP and torque, transmission, differentials gear ratio, drive tires diameter, and of course, weight of the rig (including the trailer). With HDTs, you can have all the power, braking and comfort possible. These trucks are no wider than a 1-ton dually pickup, but of course are much taller. So they do look rather foreboding. However, the safety of these trucks for the driver and passengers is unmatched in any other RV rig. I've seen a video of a fully-loaded semi-truck driver crashing into a overpass abutment and once extracted by the firemen, walked away with only minor scratches and bumps! Sure the semi and its trailer were totaled, but he survived virtually unscathed. And, I've seen too many videos of Class A RV drivers being carried away in body bags after a crash. A little glass and Sheetmetal just doesn't provide protection in a head-on crash. Concerning the large size and getting into campgrounds, Google Earth is helpful to see the size of the sites, entry and exit angles, low tree limbs and the campground roads. A bit of a challenge, to be sure. But a great traveling experience. And suggest to any HDTer, get an air ride RV hitch such as an ET from popuphitch.com/our-products/the-et-air-ride-5th-wheel-hitch/ . These hitches (since they have air bags) will take the added stress (from "chucking") off the RV 5th wheel trailer and prevent premature frame failure. Expensive hitches, but worth it to not ruin you trailer or you trips. I have one on my HDT.

Nice Pete. Were you surprised how narrow the cab was? Last truck I owned was a 2000 model. The crane I'm currently operating is getting a new DPF (emissions filter) which will cost around $10,000! That's why he was happy about having a pre-emissions truck.

Semi suspension is far too stiff (stock) for that RV. I can't imaging the amount of shock thats being transferred to the RV going down the road, especially from a tandem rear semi. They make an adapter that goes between the 5th wheel on the semi and the RV kingpin that is suppose to absorb much of that.

What a beautiful rig. I wonder what he has for a prime mover in that? There is a fella around where I used to live that built his own rig.... Yes, home made.. For the purpose specifically for towing 5th wheel campers for a dealership network. its foundation was a mid 80s dodge 1 ton pickup and he used a chopped up cab from a mid 80s Mack. So it was a 3/4 scale tractor lol. Rather comical looking, but it did the job. Underneath though the engine, transmission et al was all normal pickup stuff. So the 5.3 cummins or something along that line.

I can get 8 MPG pulling my suite. My truck is also a working truck. These trucks last 1 million miles. A 1 ton last 200k miles so you get 5 times the miles out of a semi. Life cost 500k of 1 ton trucks vs a 150k semi. It's a no brainer.

Hello Rose and Glenn! Wow….what a towing machine! I don’t think it would work for us in the boondocking world. But……if we were campground folks, this rig would be awesome! On a side note…..do you know what they say about guys with big trucks? They can tow a lot of stuff. You thought I was going to say something else, eh? Head out on Tuesday evening to pick up our repaired rig. It has been challenging to repair the fiberglass as it needs to be above 60 degrees. On Wednesday, we have an appointment in Poncha Springs CO to do the initial warranty work repairs. Safe travels!

Just a suggestion. I wouldn’t use the commercial fifth wheel hitch on a rv as the commercial hitch only pivots front to back not side to side as a rv hitch would
