Odds are she has a few.... ahem... "nice" consumer status symbol items. My wife and I have always been very frugal, but a couple years ago when we finally hit everyday millionaire status she asked if she could buy a Coach purse. I figured, "Sure, why not... she's never been into purses and shoes, etc". That was when I saw the first $400 purse I'd ever seen. Then I was educated that it was, in fact, "reasonable" by standards such as Tiffany, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. $1,200 - $4,000.... for a handbag. Aaaack! My leather wallets come from Kohls and cost about $15. I get a new one every 10 years when the old one falls apart. I'd like to hear the husband's side of the story to see what her vice(s) are.

It's making me nauseous how fast some people blow through huge amounts of money, and in particular people who have the least business doing so. Literally all their life savings gone in a few months and nothing to show for it. No coincidence that these same people are drowning in debt and can barely get by. It's a mind virus. Scary. I know how long and painful it was for me to repay just a minor debt, some folks haven't got a worry in the world throwing away money that could buy half their house. It's fascinating but not in a good way.. I'll leave it at that.

I know how that can be. Yesterday I tripped on a small root and dropped my phone, which tumbled down an incline. As it fell the screen stuck the blades of grass in just the right way to download a betting app, set up an account, open my banking app, transfer money to the gambling site, and make 230 bets which lost a total of $25,000. So I know how accidental gambling losses can happen, and it stinks.

Yep. I constantly get ads for sports betting sites. People at work who I know make less than $50k are constantly talking about various sports bets they won. They don't mention any losses, so they must be amazing at it - sarcasm. I also see people day trading stocks, which is no better. The truth is that in aggregate humans are simply no match for this type of neurochemical manipulation. Sure, some people opt out or bet only tiny amounts for amusement. But enormous numbers of people are going to get addicted. And not one of them will have known in advance that it was going to happen. In a biochemical sense, it's like your phone can now dispense cocaine.

@thomasdalton1508 Ай бұрын
Indeed. There is a lot she's not being honest about. Obviously she wasn't consolidating debts that she was just about to pay off in full, so clearly she wasn't intending to pay them off in full. And $75k equity from the house minus $25k in gambling losses is $50k but they only have $15k. Where did the other $35k go? I could understand a month's salary coming out of her savings because she lost her job a month ago, but she wasn't making $35k a month...

Gambling is a risky game of chance, often resulting in losses. Investing, on the other hand, relies on informed decisions and research for long-term growth. While gambling risks it all on uncertain outcomes, investing steadily builds wealth over time. Understanding this crucial difference can prevent accidental financial losses.
@luigijohson6732
@luigijohson6732 Ай бұрын

Absolutely, your observation hits the nail on the head. In a bear market, the key isn't necessarily to outperform but rather to endure. By weathering the storm and staying afloat while others falter, you position yourself advantageously, emerging stronger when the market rebounds. It's about strategic survival rather than chasing risky gains.

Student loans never go away. Even if you end up declaring bankruptcy, you still have to pay them off, with interest. That’s not the case with credit cards. They are one of the worst forms of debt. That’s not true anymore, if it ever was - which is in and of itself, very questionable.

Why wouldn’t you begin paying the credit cards off first? Student loans are lower interest debts.
@sidwhiting665
@sidwhiting665 Ай бұрын
Dave uses the Baby Steps. Baby Step 2 is you list all your debts smallest to largest by BALANCE OWED. They only owed $11K on student loans... $35K on credit cards. They need the psychological victory that comes from wiping out a debt to get them on track and keep them there. Look at it this way: if math were the only problem and interest rates the only concern, they wouldn't be using 25% APR credit cards. They need to learn to HATE debt and never use it again, not just piddle around with it and play numbers games.
@rolandhansen812
@rolandhansen812 Ай бұрын
What I don't get is why did she feel they had to consolidate the credit card debt before paying it off? Just take the $75K you cleared from the sale of the house and pay off the $35K on the cards. There is no need to make them into one loan first.

accidents are motor vehicle collisions, tongue biting while eating, electric shock by accidentally touching bare electric wire, drowning, falls, being injured by touching something sharp or hot, or bumping into something while walking. But, gambling is something you planned, you think about before happening, this is not an accident he knew what he was doing.
