Filoli is an amazing place. After tje ballroom was restored in 2018, they hosted a huge 1920's themed dinner party and dance. It was so much fun. The dinner was created using foods grown on the estate. Best to to visit is in late April and May.

Filoli is one of California’s most beautiful mansions… well worth a trip. The roses in the spring and summer are so fantastic to see and smell. A great gift to the people of California… been there many times. Always a joy!

I lived about 10 miles from Filoli for decades and was a member supporting the house. I loved going there during each season but especially during Christmas. The gardens are spectacular but especially in the spring and early summer. The mansion is really beautiful but I'm more drawn to the gardens. The Loma Prieta earthquake (Oct. 17, 1989) did little damage to the mansion, fortunately. The Loma Prieta earthquake was a M7 magnitude and was felt all the way to San Diego to the south (about 500 miles) and all the way east to western Nevada (about 300 miles). So hopefully, the next time San Andreas decides to move, it will not damage Filoli! I'm enjoying your series and especially the history you've been providing on the homes. Thanks for your work on these vids.

I have been to many functions at Filoli, the murals in the ball room are of his property in Ireland, and the library has wooden panels that can cover the bookshelves and I think also a bar. The gardens are some of the finest on the west coast.

@@kennixox262 From Wikipedia: "The mansion's plush interiors were also featured in the first episodes of the series but were subsequently replicated on sound stages at the Fox Studios, Century City. However the entire mansion served as the setting for the 2006 CBS Television special Dynasty Reunion: Catfights & Caviar in which cast members reunited to discuss their memories of the series. It was the first time many of the cast members had been to the actual estate."

@@jlasf Absolutely. On a similar note, Dallas, was as you may know, was a bit of a mini series before CBS turned it into a series and much of South Fork, the house was use, some interiors and mostly exteriors. The house always seemed much larger for the interior shots compared to the exterior. Had a chance to tour the house, not big at all. Rather conventional.

Prior to 2017 (or thereabouts), some of the rooms were used to conduct classes in fine arts: painting, embroidery, ribbon arts, etc. (Photography and plain air classes were conducted outdoors.) I was a member and took several of the embroidery classes that were held in the Bourns' bedrooms. Lovely views from those windows, and you had a peek at the long upstairs hallway!

Willis Polk was a gifted architect. He did not attend architectural schools, he received training through apprenticeships to Beaux-Arts trained architects in New York and Kansas City. His drawings were beautiful. He produced memorable designs at an early age. He was quite opinionated, and it cost him some significant commissions early in his career. We can thank Bourne, who stuck with him for at least a few of what remains. Polk designed a country house for Bourne near Nevada City, CA, so he could be near his mine. Filoli is elegant.

The interior staircase was used in the movie The Game with Michael Douglas. He plays a billionaire investment banker and Sean Penn plays his younger, wilder, brother. They make it out that Filoli is his home and they show him coming down that huge staircase in the morning with his briefcase. The rest of the house in the movie is clearly NOT Filoli. They also used the front elevation for where he parks his car to go inside the house.....

It would take a very large earthquake to destroy the building. There are quakes on the fault every day at various locations, and the threat of massive destruction (like California falling into the ocean) is exaggeration. Was the building retrofitted for quakes when it was restored in 2018?

Keeps building up and building up. When these two tectonic plates finally have a massive slip against each other. There is going to be an Earthquake within the next 50 years that will be between a magnitude 8 and 9 on the Richter Scale. A Magnitude 9 Earthquake is extremely destructive and devastating to all infrastructure.A magnitude 9 earthquake at the San Andres Fault line. Will cause all the Skyscrapers in San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge in to come tumbling down. No matter how much Earthquake protection they’ve. The loss of infrastructure will be astronomical and Millions of people will die. This area of California will be permanently abandoned when the big one happens. Why Millions of People choose to live in areas subject to Earthquakes and has Active Volcanoes is really STUPID!
