2hearts1seoul here in the Philippines it is not that common to use sheet sets. What average households usually have are only the fitted bottom sheet and the blanket. Funny thing is is that some usually use the top sheet as their blanket. Yes I know it might be too thin, but it is usually sufficient enough if you’re just using a fan in the room and not an AC. It works perfectly for this hot and humid all year weather. However, there are other households that use sheet sets as well.

In Nepal, we have a thing called quilt, its very heavy filled with cotton, and we cannot make it dirty because it would be almost impossible to wash ,so we put a thin white cover to the whole quilt and if the white cover gets dirty we just wash that , with the blanket which is more sexy in my view and mostly its imported from Korea and Korean blankets are very famous in Nepal as its very warm, with blankets some like to put white cover, some don't because if they put cover in the sexy blanket, they don't get to experience the warmth of blanket, so I guess it also depends on the person , Asia has almost similar culture whereas North America ,Canada and USA or UK also share the same culture especially with the white people, as people in the west value more convenience and luxury over money, so they get everything to make life physically easy whereas Asia is good at spiritual stuff and people in Asia are still poor, so people don't buy a lot of stuff . Well, Japan and Korea is definitely rich so they do a lot of things so much different than other Asian countries.

I live in Denmark and I have never seen any of my friends or family use those sheets. We only use the fitted sheets on the bottom and then a duvet. The duvet does have a sheet around it, kind of like a pillow case, so in that way it is easier to take off and wash.

I'm from the US and when I was growing up my mom tried to force the top/flat sheet as a necessary piece of bedding but I HATED them and still do. They never seem to stay in place and always end up bunched up at the end of the bed or wrapped around my leg or something, but maybe I move around in my sleep more than the average person. It is a pain in the ass to wash my huge winter comforter but I still can't use a top/flat sheet, lol.

It definitely is a cleaner option to have the top sheet. Plus, blankets and comforters can make you sweat more--because they are fuzzy, but a top sheet keeps you fresh with high quality cotton. It smells fresh from the laundry! Most people only wash their blankets every month or so, and that would be gross to sleep with a dirty blanket over you!

I'm Korean American, and I like that top sheet. Blankets don't get washed as often as the top sheet and so you need it to buffer your blankets from all the shed skin and sweat. Mites eat your dead skin and poop in your blankets all the time (google it. it's a thing). It's nice thinking that some of that gets washed off with a top sheet. Duvets work as well. When staying in Korea with aunts and uncles, I notice they sometimes used a top sheet too, so I don't think all Koreans avoid top sheets.

Hello guys! I love watching your videos 😊 I have a similar story and I only discovered that my boyfriend (Korean) didn’t know about the top sheets also, because of your video! I am Portuguese and here we also have the top sheets, so one day Yoon was laying down on top of those sheets and I asked why he was doing that, he answered he didn’t know about them and I said he should go under them. This time I didn’t realise he completely didn’t know about them because they (Koreans) didn’t have it. So one other time, we went to sleep in a friend’s house and he was ready to sleep before me but he waited standing because he wanted to ask me where should he sleep, there were so many sheets/blankets/covers that he was confused and didn’t know between which ones he should sleep 😂 Then I saw your video and asked him about it. Learning new things everyday 😊 B.

I noticed that in a lot of kdramas too. I just figured it was cultural. I'm from the US and have always used a bottom sheet and a top sheet. Like Sarah said it keeps oils from your skin from getting onto your bedspread, blankets and/or quilts so you don't have to wash the heavier items as often. Also, if you get hot at night and kick off the blankets you still have a sheet to cover with to keep a draft off of you.

In America, sheet blanket is a must. It’s too much to clean your quilt or thicker blanket every week. The sheet blanket keeps the heavier blankets clean for longer. Plus if it’s too hot during summer, it’s light and comfortable and it also adds a layer of during the winter.

Actually, 'duvet' is the word for a blanket or comforter cover, i.e. the pillowcase for the blanket.

I recommend a duvet instead and covers. Its so much better and in the wintertime, so warm, fluffy and cosy. The blankets is so thin. I change the covers once a week and its really easy to wash them together with the pillow casing and sheets.

I’m Korean who grew up in England before moving on to the States - I always had a sheet set throughout my life, so maybe it’s my family that is unusual for Koreans. Again, it’s just a me thing.

I hosted international students (in Canada) for years, from Korea, Japan and Germany. I had to explain the concept of the top sheet to them all. It ended up being part of my house 'orientation' along with how to use the dryer. Forgot all about this until you mentioned it! 😜

I’m from the UK and I’ve never heard of a top sheet. When we make our beds we have the fitted sheet on the mattress and then our duvet with a duvet cover on it. Any additional blankets or cushions is a personal preference, but when you buy a bedding set in the UK you only get the fitted sheet, duvet cover, and pillow cases☺️🇬🇧

Hmmm. Grew up in the US. Always had a top sheet, they just come automatically in a sheet set. Fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillowcases. I don't think you could buy them any other way. So you were brought up to use them all when making your bed. And in the summer when it's really hot everybody kicked off the blankets and only slept under the top sheet. HOWEVER the rest of the time it was a messy kid free for all. You rolled around, kicked off the covers, than grabbed whatever you could reach when you got cold. I can't count how many times I woke up wrapped in just a blanket with the sheets on the floor. Sarah is right about the washing but a lot of people nowadays have duvets and duvet covers so you only have to wash the thinner cover and it serves the same purpose.

Hi, I live in Canada, Province of Quebec and we use top sheet between the comforter or duvet cover. I will not be comfortable without it. Also washing a duvet cover is quite a job. I suppose is provided more warmness. I don't know if the habit of using top sheet or not are influenced by the climate that we live in?

I don't think it's a korean thing. It's more like an Asian thing. In Europe, some countries also don't use topsheet. Instead, they have a duvet cover. And in Singapore where I'm from, I even do away with the blanket. Singapore is a humid country so a blanket (or duvet) is a dispensable item, at least it's for me.
@mariaantonia18

@@ymhktravel yes, some countries here are also the same. They only use the duvet. I wrote "Korean idea" because they are in South Korea ☺️ It also depends on the weather....if it is too hot, I just want the sheet or no sheet while sleeping ahahaha

About the sheets, in Brazil the whole set are popular here, we usually buy the whole set. I don't know if it's just our family, but we just use the fitted sheet and store the top sheet and only use it when we want some light cover when it's chilly. I never thought about it being a barrier to the blankets so it wouldn't get dirty fast. Interesting!

Personally, forget the washing, keeping it clean, it’s all about the feel of high thread count or fluffiness of winter sheets. High thread cool sheets for the hot summer and, fluffy and smooth flannel sheets for the cold winter.

I'm from the U.S. and my grandma was born and raised in Canada and she definitely does the fitted sheet, then the top sheet with normally a thin blanket (according to the weather) and then your duvet on top which she rolls down to the bottom of the bed when she goes to sleep. This has definitely been the same thing for my dad's side of the family who is all from the states and they've always used a top sheet as well. But I always find it a hassle to to do the top sheet so as an adult making my own decisions I have completely opted-out of it xD makes life so much easier when making my bed! Just take the duvet off and wash it as necessary.

Going through and watching all the videos as I am a fairly new subscriber. I am with Sarah on the top sheet. It is a must. I use not only because it helps keep the blankets from getting dirty quicker, but for me as a duvet person, if I had to wash my duvet cover weekly, then the colours would fade faster and not look as nice. Loving these videos.🇨🇦

I get both of your points of view because I'm a Korean who has been living in the US since I was 5 years old. I see the benefit of using a top sheet but hate having to deal with another layer. So my compromise is a duvet cover for my winter comforter. The lighter spring/summer blankets I just throw in the washing machine.

We're East European [in the US for 40+ years] and always used duvets even before immigration ... and still used (still do) use the top sheet under a duvet-covered blanket. In the US, it's often a running joke about guys (for some reason) not knowing what a duvet is. It's like the unicorn of bed sets. I own tons of them, including velour and flannel. H&M and Ikea have been great in introducing that to my fellow Americans. It's not uncommon to put a beautiful quilt or a coverlet over the whole thing for a more formal look or use a quilt in lieu of a blanket in summer months. Beemo's approval is the best endorsement. I hope that company also makes pet beds or starts to.🦄
