Out of all the reaction videos I’ve watched for this music video, you guys are the only ones that really nail the symbolism in it!

The symbolism is so important. The plastic surgery comes with the feeling of insecurity.The masked audience is the music industry and award academies. He began to pee on the masked audience and throws away the award. In 2:02 he whispers Selena. She is the only real person around him (no mask). ALSO the woman is wearing the same thing Selena did in the Dance again video, hair, earrings and everything lol. Depression draws him to suicide which is why he makes her pull the trigger. He then appears to be in hell because of committing suicide and actually going into the lifestyle of greed, lust, and fame. JUST A THEORY

He’s basically taking a lot of shots at the Grammys and also that girl in the video was supposed to represent Selena Gomez

So allegedly, the girl without the mask is supposed to be Selena Gomez. Other than that, this video says so much. No just about her, not just about the Grammys. Not even just about Hollywood in general. It’s a self inflicted desire to appease to everyone else for acceptance. His face was wrapped up entirely during this VMA performance. The outcome is what we see in this video. Next, the only person in the video with no mask, is a woman. She (allegedly), is supposed to represent Selena Gomez. This goes back to his “My Dear Melancholy” EP where he referenced her in the song “Call Out My Name” with the quote; “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life” He was willing to help her live. But in turn, the gun is in her hands, cuffed by his. It’s almost as if he’s begging her to do this. He wanted her to live, but the pain of the aftermath obviously still haunts him to the point he wants to die. She should be the one to do it, since he’s been hurt the most by her. In the song “I Was Never There” a quote “You’d rather something toxic, so I poison myself again, again. Til I feel nothing” So willing to make it work, you damage yourself to just be accepted. To be noticed. This is what YOU wanted, this is what I need to have YOU notice me. Keep me around. Even if I hurt myself in the process. This comes full circle, not only to her but everyone and everything. He made himself new, created something that “Hollywood” would accept. In such a dire need to feel acceptable, he made himself into one of them. Despite it all, he still doesn’t get acknowledged. The Grammy board didn’t nominate him for anything. Selena moved on very quickly, and didn’t seem to care. So even with wanting getting plastic surgery, broadcasting it to the world on the center stage. Jazzing up his suit jacket, trying to stand out, he still isn’t accepted. YOU did this. I did all this for YOU. For the media. I did this for YOU,Selena. I did this for YOU, Grammy board. I did this for YOU, Hollywood. But yet, I still am not acknowledged, still I am not accepted. Even when doing what I could do to fit in. The fakes and phonies behind the masks that he puts on a show for are all expressionless. Anything he does...just simply. Isn’t. Enough. So what’s next for a man in denial? For a man who needs to be acknowledged. By past lovers, media and the world stage. This is what YOU, have made me become. I’ve tried to fit in. I’ve tried to stand out. Notice how he goes up to a stage. Set up to look like a a place a funeral would take place. Where one would speak about the person who died. Enter the gun. But it’s a gag. I pulled a lot of symbolism from the movie “The Mask” as well for some reason. -How it changed the character -The dance moves -room looks like the “Coco Bongo” club -people wearing masks -the female character focal point. Probably nothing to do with it, but watch that scene from the movie too.

I enjoyed the speculating but i don't think its about Hollywood being evil. Or that evilness pushing people to kill themselves. The music video actually plays tricks on your mind because what it visualizes is not what the song is about. The song is primarily about Abel's second failed relationship with Bella Hadid and the song also references Selena which is visualized by the female that doesn't wear a mask. He also faintly says the name Selena during the song. The masked audience is meant to represent the faceless, unknown corrupt committee of The Grammy's who decided that his recent work wasn't excellent enough to receive a Grammy nomination. As you can see he's also taking a ''piss'' on the Grammy's which is further visualized by him throwing away the Trophy. Also the Selena Gomez look-a-like ''killing'' Abel is meant to symbolize how Selena killed their relationship. And the color scheme changing afterwards is probably Abel thinking he might go to hell because he doesn't consider himself a good person. Regardless the song is very layed but Evil and Suicide never came to mind with me because i don't think that's at play here.

He wasn’t nominated for any Grammys which is fucked up only cause he’s performing at the super bowl that’s why they snubbed him also when he reached for the girls hand you can hear him whisper in the song Selenas name which is very odd. Notice everyone has a mask and the girl doesn’t she real and he’s fake also want her to shoot him maybe he wants her to diss him cause he’s dissed her

I don’t know much about The Weeknd, but I think he’s probably a very genuine person even though some of his songs make him seem just the opposite. I can tell he’s not in this for just the fame and money. His work means everything to him.

What he trying to mean is that Selena Gomez broke his heart that’s why the lady that was dancing with him looked like Selena Gomez so he was heartbroken and to save her tears.

I think that this video is basically saying everyone and everything wants to be something it's not, aka the "plastic surgery" on him, the masks on the audience + a lot more stuff. Even when he was dancing with the girl he was dancing with, he had a gun to "shoot" her with, implying it was fake love. Even the bottle of champagne he was pouring on the people looked like he was peeing on them, but in reality, it was champagne, again, something fake. Then there's the gun, in the end, instead of bullets coming out, confetti does, another fake thing in this world. I think the message is that everyone wants to be fake and outlets like Hollywood just make it so that you want to be even more fake. Then you have celebrities like Kim Kardashian which makes everything fake look good. At least that's what I got out of the video:)
