Dang Qiu is one of the top penholders in the world right now, and he just secured one of his largest career victories yet, making it into the top 4 of the prestigious WTT Men's Finals at Doha.

yea love it that there always is a strong penholder around. Right when Xu Xin was close to retire Dang Qiu came out of nowhere and Felix Lebrun couple of years after him. I changed from Shakehand to Penhold in i think 2020 after watching a couple Xu Xin and Ma Lin matches. That was the most entertaining table tennis ever. Even though the two europeans are not as entertaining its still great that they represent and endagered species. Dang Qui's backhand is crazy especially down the line he got so many points with that. And yes WTTs camera angles and cuting is horrible i hate it. Just give us a stationary cam pointing to one of the edges, elevate it a little and done.

Penholders using both sides are considered similar to shakehanders. Penholders who have disppeared in the world-class competitions are Japanese penholders using just one side, like Ryu Seung-min. Actually, penholders have more advantages in serving, spin, forehand and backhand block, and playing on the table.

ofc the players adapt trying to get the best of both worlds. but i still disagree with you. shakehanders change the grip for serves to equal the penholders. after all shakehanders still get a more powerful backhand, a little more versatile too. penholders seem to have the more powerful forhand if they go all out. after all the stats show that shakehanders have a slight advantager overall considering most of the best players now and also in history play shakehand. cant argue against ma long and waldner i guess.

@@TTL-oe5yz I'm Korean and I can tell you that we don't call penhold "Japanese." There used to be a distinction between the "Japanese" style penhold which spread the fingers on the back vs. Chinese penhold in which only the middle finger is against the back. Both penhold styles use only one side of the bat.

felix Lebrun is the best non-chinese player in the world right now! It is honestly the most surprising thing ever to me, I though he would just sit in the top 20 for a little while then break through in a few years like Harimoto, but he has just been smashing through the rankings! Incredible player and honestly super inspiring, he is making think I might want to switch back to penhold, when I learned with, it still feel more comfortable to me when I try it every few weeks but Ive improved so much with shakehand recently that I can't bring myself to make the switch back yet.

A traditional penhold athlete, at the highest caliber of skill with explosive power, blistering footwork would always be able to contend. No need for two sides. Percentage of people in the world playing this style are few, unfortunately. The style never dies, but athletes age.

Taught myself the shake-hand for 2 months and the pen-hold, 2 weeks. Found both to be very cumbersome and limited. But invented a more versatile and aesthetic looking grip. Only 9 months old, but has the potential to become a monster when fully developed. Guarantee.

But based on my experience in the comment sections of KZfaq, every time I bring up my new grip, no one seems to want to know anything more about it, especially the Chinese. They think they've already uncovered everything there is in table tennis. There was this one old Chinese man in particular, who claimed to be a former world champion with 40 years of experience as a coach and tournament referee. But as soon as I told him I was working on a new grip and the style and techniques to go with it, he just went something in the line of, "Nope! You need to find yourself a coach to teach you about this game." He acted as if there were no other alternatives. So funny.
