I learned a lot from the Alireza-Nepo game. Nepo's fundamental understanding when not part of his prep or opening he knows seems to be lower than you'd expect which perhaps speaks something to why he was never 2800+ despite of everything. As you explained his locking of the centre was sub master level. It gave Alireza a classic KID (classic as in Nbd7 lines) plan which is easy, sound and with a half tempo up he was playing for only two results. However, then at 7:40 I believe Alireza fell for an appearance position (IM David Levin has an entire book on that topic where he explains to people how not to fall for positions that aesthetically seem like they offer something when in fact they don't). I'm assuming he thought that by trading off all the pieces the resulting bishops, despite being opposite colour, hence, an exception, would be favourable for white due to the c1-h6 diagonal and black's will be shut in. He was wrong of course and your explanation was very good which in turn showed his lack of understanding as well seeing as the knight was necessary on c4 and exchanging the h3-bishop prior to playing f5 is thematic. All in all, very weird by both. This is so weird that I dare say that had I played Yan in that position I'd probably win and somehow Alireza chose the only way to deal with the structure where the outcome even after the expansion and thematic attack is still only a draw. Very very weird. Just wanted to add that 10:40 - where he went wrong is simple and complex to explain but to start with he needed a knight, to continue, he needed to play around with the move order to delay it so when he does play it he would have "triangulated", he also had his concept was simply flawed. It wasn't an exception, a bad bishop can still hold off an attack and a better bishop can simply be insufficient.

The Salimova vs Lei looks like an accelerated Shirov gambit declined which is absolutely terrifying to deal with either way because whites pawns are barreling down your kingside(the declined) or you have the rook at G1 staring at your pawnline on the side you really need to be castling to so you comfortably pull off the typically quite aggressive queenside midgame that is set up in the opening.

I've had tournament directors give me three blacks in a row in four rounds. I also had one forfeit my game when I requested a bye prior to the tournament starting. And still argued about when the bye was in writing. OTB sucks these days.
