"Every Breath You Take" from The Police was sampled by Puff Daddy featuring 112 (R&B female group) during the '90s "I'll Be Missing You". Song was about Biggie Smalls.. They were all under the same record label, Bad Boy Records. Other good videos/songs from John Waite "Change" and "Restless Heart".

John Waite was in "The Babys" and would later help form the supergroup "Bad English" in 1989. Neil Schon and Johnathan Cain of Journey fame were also in that group.

@Brad and Lex You got it RIGHT Lex. You can hear in his voice and in the lyrics of this song that he misses this person he is singing about. He loves this woman deeply, though because he has lost her he is still in love with her and he is hurting so badly that he is trying to convince himself, that he dose not care about her anymore. But alas, it does him no good to deny the fact that she is everything to him. I LOVE this heartfelt and Beautiful Song and Love John Waite. He was in the 70s in the Babys and the 80s also in Bad English. Then in the 80s he also embarked on a solo career. All, of these ventures into his musical career, he produced a list of Hits all along the way (this song "Missing You") is just one of them. John Waite is a very talented and accomplished musical Artist.

I saw him in September opening for Rick Springfield and Men at Work. He still sounds the same. I really love his music. He only did 6 songs but I enjoyed all of the songs in his set list. He’s a great musician. I love him.

@@ryanjacobson2508 Absolutely correct. He is hurting so badly that he is desperately trying to get back control of himself, because all he can do is think of her. Obviously he is still in love, and is denying it, because the pain is so great, that he is losing his sanity.

I bought this album on vinyl when it first came out. It was similar in sound to a few other singers at the time as the 1970s gave way to the 1980s and music changed. Don Henley from The Eagles came out with a solo album that year and it had a similar vibe. It was still an era of melodic pop/rock but it soon changed. I think it's that melodic music of the era that surprises so many young people today. Songs have melodies. Who knew?

Waite got married in his native England before moving to New York, where he recorded his first solo album, Ignition, which was released in 1984. The album was a disappointment, and after some squabbles with his record company (Chrysalis), he returned to England and settled into married life. After extricating from his contract, he signed a new deal with EMI and returned to New York, leaving his wife behind while he made his second album, No Brakes. "My wife was a long way away," Waite said in a interview. "There were quite a few women in my life at the time, and it all came sort of floating to the top." Waite's feelings poured out of him in the song - on one level, he missed his wife dearly, but on a more superficial plane he didn't miss her at all, which is what he sang on the refrain: "I ain't missing you at all." Waite's record label was convinced they had enough songs for the No Brakes album, but he felt it lacked a hit single. He went to a songwriter's house in LA, who showed him a guitar melody on a cassette tape. Waite listened to the melody once through, and the second time, improvised the entire first verse, 'B' section, and "missing you" section without stopping. Waite said the song was about three women in his life: he was getting divorced, and he was thinking of an old love interest from when he first moved to New York City as well as a current love interest. He said, "I was singing about New York, and distance, the caving in of my marriage, and the options that I had. It was bittersweet - it was about the end of my marriage and the beginning of something new. Although, when I was singing ‘I ain’t missing you’, it was denial too." He had to convince the record label to spend $5,000 to record one last single-this one-for the album.[7]

See a lot of comments on Waite's time with the Baby's. He layer went on to be in Bad English. Their big hit was "When I see you Smile". It's a great 80s power ballad.

Brad & Alex, this was recorded at time before widespread and full-featured sampling. While the Emulator was just hitting the streets about then, it wasn't user friendly or full-featured enough to sample long streams of data. Those features would happen in a few years afterwards. I loved Lex's initial remark about Waite's lyrics being akin to poetry. This is a fun video. Thanks.

The whole song he's expressing his heartbreak but couping with her decision to leave him by telling himself he's not missing her.. but then at the end finally submitting to his feelings and admitting that he's lying to himself.. If you ever been heartbroken you'd understand. Beautiful song.. If yall haven't done any Don Henley I'd suggest "Boys of Summer"

It's not sampled, it's that there was by this point a hit-single drum sound that was perfected. So it sounds the same. That tight kick drum, muffled snare, cymbals pushed back of the mix kind of sound.
