If it’s okay with you, may I hear about your journey? I’m so proud of you.
@elfinshell47582 жыл бұрын
@@danieladsouza9431 thank you for the kind words. My story is a bit of a sad one too, but nowhere near what the gentleman in this video has experienced. It’s also very long, so I apologise for that, but I don’t mind sharing. You don’t have to read it all, of course. I’d always been an anxious child, fairly sheltered, and I loved reading books. My grandma was my best friend. She taught me how to cook, and how to knit and more. She was diagnosed with cancer and passed away very quickly after the diagnosis. Like, maybe a month or two later. I was 8 years old when she passed. I wasn’t told that she had cancer until after she’d passed, all I knew was that ‘she’s sick’ and I only found out it was cancer because I overheard my mom telling a friend about it. And to top it all off, I wasn’t allowed to go to her funeral. Mom apparently thought that would be best for me, and she didn’t want to have to deal with me there and upset too, I guess. So I never really got to say goodbye to her. Not gonna lie, that screwed me up. I fell into depression shortly after that, and then when I was 11 my mom was diagnosed with bowel cancer. She was in hospital a lot and on two different stays she was very close to death both times. I was so afraid that she’d be gone one day just like my grandma was. And so came the anxiety, worse than ever before. Mom fought it for 5 years and has been in remission since, but still has a lot of permanent health complications from it. (Colostomy, malabsorption from the surgeries having to take out feet of bowel and intestine, and others issues.) Right in the middle of mom battling cancer, I’d only just turned 14, I was raped. I had to hurt him in order to get away. The assault was at knifepoint and I do believe he wasn’t going to let me go alive. I kept the assault a secret until I was 18. I held it all in for 4 years. For a very long time I thought that made me just as bad as him, because I’d hurt him, too in order to get away. Thankfully now I know better and realise that I likely saved my own life with my actions that day. Shortly after that was when I started drinking. After the assault I’d have nightmares every time I slept. Every time I closed my eyes I could see it happening over again. Now I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD from it, but at the time I had no idea why I kept reliving this horrible thing. I found that if I drank ‘enough’ and passed out, I wouldn’t dream at all, and so I didn’t have to be afraid of falling asleep anymore. I felt ‘free’. As stupid as that sounds now. So that was how I got all my sleep for quite a few years. I tried on and off through the years to quit, but it was usually half hearted or I was fully motivated, until the cravings started. Then I caved almost immediately. Years later I’ve been drinking for almost 10 years, and I’d been in a not so great relationship with an alcoholic partner for 4 years, and I was downing 2+ full bottles of wine every night. (I’m a pretty small woman, for reference). Finally I was so sick of being constantly hungover and becoming more ill by the day, every morning I woke up vomiting, and I decided that I wanted to quit. Not that I thought I ‘should’ quit, but for the first time in my life I truly WANTED it. And so I did it. My partner and I broke up soon after that and I moved back home with my parents, this was at the beginning of the ‘rona. Quitting was, and still is one of the hardest things I’ve done in my life. It was my go to coping mechanism for years, and I’m still trying to reprogram my brain away from it, as whenever I’m upset or anxious my first instinct is ‘I want a drink.’ It took probably 6 months for the cravings to subside, but I no longer have the desire to drink, and I don’t have cravings very often at all. When I do have a craving, I don’t think of how ‘good’ acting on it might make me feel, but now I immediately think of the hangovers. And how it’s not worth throwing up and throwing away years of hard work for a temporary desire. Most importantly, I’m happier than ever. I’m out of the toxic relationships I had with people and with alcohol. My mood is far more stable and I’m healthier. My relationships with my family are better. Now I’m well enough to take care of some animals, which I absolutely love doing. I’ve planted a veggie garden with my dad, and I can consistently look after it now that I’m sober. I’m more present for my family and friends when they need me, and I’m grateful for every single day that I’m here and healthy.

It takes so little to brighten someone else's day. Yet it can leave them feeling happy for a moment, an hour, a day, or give them a sweet memory for life. Help someone in need (esp. the elderly), tell someone you care about they’re amazing, compliment the chef who just made your delicious dinner, post something positive or leave a kind comment on social media, even just smile at people around you... And it will make you feel pretty awesome, too 🙌.

Love seeing self reclamation, stories like this are amazing. I myself had issues with opioids and not caring about others(very selfish(addict)), and overcame that addiction(12/23/13) and haven't looked back. And bought 2 scooters for kids that are one the Christmas tree at stores with the top 3 toys they want and found 2 with scooter at the top and made it happen. Made me feel great knowing 2 kids will get what they want when they wake up Christmas morning

I'm 68 Days clean from opiates. Do the cravings ever go away? I feel pretty okay, but sometimes the thoughts of using are so incredibly overwhelming. Self improvement and a stoic mindset is the only thing that is helping me rn
