not only that but when you're fighting a professional grandmaster, you can't just jump in. it's a lot harder than some bums in a street fight jumping someone. even if they jumped the max amount of ppl that can attack at once is 4 or 5. if you attack with ten, you're going in blind and it's going to be chaos and you'll prob knock one of your friends out cause your just throwing punches in all that chaos.

Yeah unfortunately in real life, if you go against that many people you're going to get hurt..... Ironically though, Donnie Yen did beat up 7-8 gangsters In real life because they were bothering his girlfriend... So unless you actually know karate, it's not a good idea to fight a grandmaster.

For anyone saying that everyone "waiting around" is not realistic, consider this: Martial Arts, when done by professionals, is supposed to be quick paced. If you go in when two people are already engaged, you better know FOR DAMN SURE the person you are hitting is the opponent and not your friend. Yes more people means more fists in the fight, but that also means more people to potentially get in the way.

So, in regards to the 1v1, that's also filmwork. I've worked on a few films with this kind of action. The movement of the guys in the background creates the illusion of them sort of "preparing" to jump in and doesn't create a static field of people standing around doing nothing. You usually keep it 1 guy after another coming forward so as not to cluster the camera but again, it also creates the illusion that he's fighting all of them at the same time. If they all jumped him at once, he would get beat down badly. Movie magic, people.

A lot of people ask why all 10 didn't jump him at once, as in many other movies with similar scenes. The main reason is efficiency. It is actually really hard to fight one guy at the same time with many other people, and it doesn't look like a fight anymore, just a dog pile. Second, you can't fight with technique in dog pile, and these guys are using traditional martial arts. It is against their teaching to just randomly punch and beat someone into the ground like in a random street fight. Also, the main challenge here isn't really fighting 10 at once, it is mainly endurance. You are fighting 10 guys, all who waste very little movement while watching one guy fight fighter after fighter. Each fighter has full strength, while the single fighter is losing stamina after every fight. The display of skill here is actually Ip Man's technique and stamina.

If all 10 rushed him at the same time, they’d be hitting each other, not him. It’s actually very realistic when it’s a 1 vs Many situation. It’s in human nature to avoid things that can get you hurt. If you asked someone, “Would you like to be punched in the face?”, the answer is obviously no. If all of them rushed at one target, they’d be hitting themselves more than their actual target, and a bunch of heads clunking around and punches being thrown isn’t very fun.

In Japan, they fight one on one out of respect. They don’t “jump” people, they have tons of respect for their art form and wouldn’t want to stain that name. Also the Ip Man series is BADASS bro. to your point on jumping all at once , there isnt enough space even a real street fight where the Charleston Stomp is put on someone. If you see any fight where someone is jumped only 3-4 people can have room to strike someone in most cases. Great upload and reaction and the movie is a great watch even with subtitles. The story is very well and the best of all Ip Man series is the first movie.

When you're doing wing chun chain punching you gotta be really close to your opponent in order to do lots of damage. Meaning you will need to condition your legs to push forward as well.
